Book reveals dark side of Big Brother

A book by former Big Brother star Narinder Kaur has lifted the lid on the troubled lives of the contestants who appeared on the show.

Big Brother: The Inside Story even claims that Big Brother 6 resident Sam Heuston slashed her wrists after feeling that she could no longer cope with life outside the house.

"I grabbed a razor and cut myself in front of my dad," she tells the book. "Blood was all over my arm and dripping on the floor. The ambulance arrived and paramedics stemmed the bleeding. At the hospital I was diagnosed with severe depression, given stronger pills and referred for psychotherapy."

The 25-year-old's cry for help was in stark contrast to her first experiences of celebrity after being voted off the show. In the early days, she dated Blue singer Duncan James and enjoyed plenty of tabloid attention. But depression struck as her 15 minutes of fame subsided.

"The hype and the attention was amazing. Life was a huge high," she adds; but she soon became "down, lonely and hysterical."

She's not the only former Big Brother resident to have suffered after leaving the show. BB1 star Melanie Hill, now a trainee barrister, was forced to hire minders for two years after her appearance.

"One night I was chased after someone recognised me," she tells the book. "I was petrified and stopped going out."

Elsewhere, BB6 winner Anthony Hutton admits that he was "randomly punched" at a nightclub.

Post Big Brother Shock Disorder: The Diagnosis

POST Big Brother Shock Disorder: an anxiety disorder that may develop after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which acute mental or physical harm occurred or was threatened. Traumatic events that may trigger PBBSD include: being passed over for a presenting job on Living TV, a stint on Celebrity Binge Drink or military combat.

And now you can read about PBBSD in a book by Narinder Kaur, Big Brother survivor. Entitled Big Brother: The Inside Story, Ms Kaur will lift yet another lid off the show that everyone is talking about.

Says Narinder: “There are now around 100 former housemates,' she explains, 'some drifting around aimlessly, some the walking wounded, some who went back to their old lives as best as they could, and some, well… who knows?”

That we should never forget these wannabes, has beens and never weres is clear. And while we champion a National Day of Reality TV Remembrance - a ten minute silence to be presented by Danielle Lloyd and Calum Best - Kaur goes on.

She remembers Sam Heuston who experienced Blue's Duncan James and was so depressed after her eviction that she slashed her wrists in front of her dad.

Say Sam: “I grabbed a razor and cut myself in front of my dad. Blood was all over my arm and dripping on the floor. The ambulance arrived and paramedics stemmed the bleeding. At the hospital I was diagnosed with severe depression, given stronger pills and referred for psychotherapy."

Anthony Hutton was "randomly punched” in a club. Makosi Musambasi received death threats form Zimbabwe. The shocks are plenty.

And we thank Narinder for showing us the way. And showing other Big Brother agonists that no matter what, you can always get write a book and move on…

What kind of info are you after Cameron?

I have bought the book and read a little bit, but not had time to read much yet unfortunately. It seems very good what I have read so far and worth buying.

Kate fans may also like it, as she is one of the former housemates featured in it.

I should try to get a hold of a copy, just to see what's in it. Not after any info in particular, just a general idea of what's in it I suppose.

Thanks Christine - I haven't bought it yet, not seen it on general sale - but fully understand Narinder's viewpoint. Narinder spent time with Jade on the BB panto & saw how in awe some of the weaker BB people were of Jade - & saw some of the stronger BB people, who, er, weren't.

The Jade hype was always rubbish - she used Spencer & Alex to attack Kate in her autobiography.

Kate is spot on, but knows in this desperate promotion of the z-list age that crappy hype is everything & Jade will probably even survive her disgusting behaviour on CBB5.

Why wouldn't Narinder want to speak to Kate?? - Kate is one of the very few that Brian actually likes.

When I get a bit more time and if I remember, I will write a bit more of what it's about.

Here is just a summary of what the book is about:-

There is a Foreward to the book written by Brian Dowling, followed by an Introduction written by Narinder. In the introduction, she wrote (amongst other things) 'Some (of the ex-housemates) that I contacted were quite frankly rude, unprofessional and thought far too much of themselves. I'm not naming any names, but one texted me at 4am demanding an extortionate fee that was considerably more than I was getting paid to put the book together! One would only do the book if it was going to include Halle berry, because otherwise why would she want to be involved in a book with Big Brother people?'

There are then Chapters about various things, such as 'Why did they do it?', 'What was the Audition like?', 'What was life like in the house?' and then various aspects of life after the house. Each chapter starts with a piece by Narinder herself answering the question and then she does a paragraph for each ex housemate that she interviewed. Apparently, Sophie did Big Brother purely for the money and hadn't watched the show because she had been working abroad on cruise ships for the 2 years previous and she didn't realise the enormity of the show.

The ex-housemates interviewed in the book, are Melanie Hill BB1, Amma BB2, Makosi BB6, Derek Laud BB6, Eugene BB6, Alex Sibley BB3, Sophie BB3, Kinga BB6, Emma Greenwood BB5, Victor BB5, Sissy BB4, Brian Dowling BB2, Kate Lawler BB3, Sam Heuston BB6, Anthony Hutton BB6, Nadia BB5, Lea Walker BB7 and Richard Newman BB7.

There are also interviews with Boyd Hilton TV Editor of Heat Magazine, Gary Thompson, Senior Associate Editor, News of the World, Sharon Marshall, TV Critic This Morning, Rachel Morris, Psychotherapist, BB, Phil Edgar-Jones, Creative Director, Endemol and Kevin O'Sullivan TV Critic Sunday Mirror.

As I said I haven't read very much yet, but so far it is a very good and interesting book.

Thanks Christine for your humorous appraisal - I hope Kate wasn't one of the Big Brother housemates who was 'rude', 'unprofessional' & 'thought too much of themselves'!

It would have been nice to see an appraisal of Big Brother housemates who've appeared on Big Brother forums.
