Hamilton Notches Up Historic F1 Win
Britain's Lewis Hamilton has become the first black man in the history of Formula One motor racing to win a Grand Prix.
The 22-year-old did it with a stunning victory in the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. It was only his sixth F1 race.
Hamilton was also the first rookie winner since Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya for Williams in 2001.
"This is a fantastic day, this is historic," he said.
He added: "I knew I was ready for something, it was just a matter of where and when.
"The next dream is to win the Formula One world championship. But we have to be realistic and remember this is my rookie year."
Hamilton, driving a McLaren, had started the 70-lap race in pole position.
Germany's Nick Heidfeld was second for BMW Sauber and Austrian Alexander Wurz third for Williams.
Hamilton now leads the championship with 48 points, eight clear of team mate and double world champion Fernando Alonso who finished seventh.
The Briton, in his first Grand Prix season, had finished on the podium in all of his five previous races.
On a day packed with incident, BMW's Polish driver Robert Kubica was taken to hospital after a horrific crash.
Ferrari's title contender Felipe Massa and Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella were disqualified as the safety car was deployed four times.
Hamilton showed great composure to keep his focus at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.while all around were losing their's.
