A 29-year-old man from Essex has pleaded guilty to stealing from television celebrity Jade Goody.

Luke Rustem, of Harlow, was accused of stealing more than £12,000 worth of cheques belonging to Miss Goody between February 2005 and April 2006.

Rustem, Miss Goody's former childminder, admitted the charge when he appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court.

Miss Goody came to the public's attention after appearing naked on the Big Brother reality television show.

Luke Rusten, 29, started the ruse back in February 2005, eventually stealing £12,500 by cashing Goody’s cheques without her permission.

However, at Chelmsford Crown Court yesterday, Rusten pleaded guilty to the offences, to the relief of Goody. Said she, “It's over now. It's been going on for two years. I'm just pleased it's over. It has upset me. Trust is a big thing and he broke that."

Judge Anthony Goldtaub QC told Rusten that he would be given a suspended prison sentence when he returns to the court next month.

Maybe he’ll be forced to enter the Big Brother house as punishment.

Jade Goody unwittingly befriended a conman and employed him as a childminder, a court has heard.

Luke Rustem went on to steal thousands of pounds from the Big Brother star.

Goody gave the 29-year-old the run of her home, not knowing he had convictions for stealing from a previous employer.

Rustem, of Harlow, Essex, stole more than £12,000 from her over 14 months.

He would cut cheques from her cheque book and then forge her signature, Chelmsford Crown Court heard.

Last month, Rustem admitted stealing from Goody.

Judge Anthony Goldstaub QC has now imposed an eight-month suspended jail term on him.

He said Rustem was one of Goody's trusted friends and had access to almost all areas of her home.

"You abused that trust and ratted on that friendship and stole from Miss Goody," the judge said.

"What made it worse was that unbeknown to Miss Goody, you had a previous conviction for a not dissimilar offence."

He added: "You are a man widely marked by shame and dishonour."

Rustem admitted nine offences between February 2005 and April 2006.

Goody, 26, of Chipping Ongar, Essex, was not in court to see Rustem sentenced.

After he pleaded guilty at a hearing last month, she said: "It has upset me. Trust is a big thing and he broke that." Skynews

The police are warning us to get a police check for anyone you want to employ to work with children, but we can see from the evidence above she doesn't have the welfare of her children at hearth because she employed Luke Rustem to look after her two sons without any police check first.

A man sentenced today for stealing from television celebrity Jade Goody has been banned from going to the pub.

In what is seen as an unusual move, Anthony Goldstaub QC said he wanted to "inconvenience" Luke Rustem and "clip his wings".

The director of policy and public affairs at Nacro, the crime reduction charity, said she had "never heard of anything like it before".

The judge imposed the ban - which also prevents Rustem from visiting other licensed premises including nightclubs and restaurants - as a condition of an eight-month suspended prison sentence.

The sentence is suspended for 18 months.
