Chris Benoit, family found dead

Written: June 25, 2007STAMFORD, Conn., June 25, 2007 – World Wrestling Entertainment was informed today by authorities in Fayette County, Ga., that WWE Superstar Chris Benoit, his wife, Nancy, and his son were found dead in their home. Authorities are investigating, but no other details are available at this time.

Instead of its announced programming for Monday on USA Network, WWE aired a three-hour tribute to Chris Benoit.

Chris was beloved among his fellow Superstars, and was a favorite among WWE fans for his unbelievable athleticism and wrestling ability. He always took great pride in his performance, and always showed respect for the business he loved, for his peers and towards his fans. This is a terrible tragedy and an unbearable loss.

WWE extends its sincere condolences and prayers to the Benoit family and loved ones in this time of tragedy.

Benoit's death part of a double murder-suicide

Written: June 25, 2007According to lead investigator Lt. Tommy Pope, of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, in Fayetteville, Ga., the deaths of WWE Superstar Chris Benoit, wife Nancy and son Daniel were the result of a double murder-suicide, WWE.com has learned.

Benoit failed to appear both at Saturday’s live event in Beaumont, Tx., and WWE’s Vengeance: Night of Champions in Houston Sunday night, after informing WWE of a family emergency. Several curious text messages sent by Benoit early Sunday morning prompted concerned friends to alert Richard Hering, VP of Government Relations for WWE, Inc. Hering, in turn, spoke with Fayette County sheriffs Monday, and requested that they respond to the Benoit residence to check on him and his family.

Authorities representing the Sheriff’s Department initially had a difficult time entering Benoit’s new Fayetteville home Monday afternoon, which had been guarded by two large German Shepherds roaming freely around the property. Once authorities entered the residence, they quickly located the bodies of Benoit, Nancy and Daniel. WWE was notified of the discovery at approximately 4 p.m.

At 10 p.m. Monday night, Lt. Pope held a press conference in conjunction with Scott Ballard, the district attorney for Fayette County. The press conference officially ruled authorities’ findings as a double murder-suicide from within the home.

WAGA, a FOX-owned and operated television station in Atlanta, reported that investigators believe Benoit killed his wife and 7-year-old son over the weekend, then himself on Monday.

The three bodies have been received by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s crime lab, in Decatur, Ga., where autopsies will be performed Tuesday morning. Toxicology reports will not become available for at least two weeks.

WWE.com has further information relating to both the investigation and the cause of death, but the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department has requested that WWE.com not release any additional details at this time.

WWE STAR DEATH PROBE

POLICE have launched a murder investigation after one of the WWE’s most famous wrestlers was found dead alongside his young family.

Chris Benoit, 40, was discovered by police at his home in Fayetteville, Georgia. The bodies of his wife Nancy and seven-year-old son Daniel were also found in the home.

Reports in the US indicated that the popular wrestler, a former WWE world heavyweight champion, had killed his family over the weekend before taking his own life. The WWE said on its website the death was being treated by local police as a double murder and suicide.

Results of a post-mortem are due later today.

The wrestler had been due to appear on a show in Texas on Saturday night, followed by an appearance on the WWE’s pay-per-view even on Sunday, but failed to appear at either. Concerned friends asked the police to check on him.

Last night WWE scrapped it’s planned Raw show, shown here on Sky Sports, and aired an extended tribute to Benoit.

Benoit took up wrestling after being inspired by British grappler Tom “Dynamite Kid” Billington, initially making a name for himself in his native Canada before training and wrestling in Japan.

He went on to greater fame in the US through stints with ECW, WCW and most recently the WWE, where he won the company’s world heavyweight championship at their Wrestlemania 20 event in 2004.

He met Nancy, his second wife, after being scripted in a storyline where she left her husband for Benoit, which then mirrored real life when she left husband Kevin Sullivan – who scripted the plot – for Benoit.

He had two children from an earlier marriage, who were not thought to be at the house.

I haven't watched any wrestling for many, many years but I remember being really shocked when Owen Hart fell to his death a few years back (1999 possibly) so the whole community must be in alot of shock right now.

Unfortunately, it's becoming a growing trend now in the WWE for stars to die well before they should. Eddie Guerrero died last year around the same age as Benoit, Mike Awesome died earlier this year as well.

In almost all instances though, drugs are a huge factor and the Benoit case is another of those.

WWE has always been ridiculously OTT with it's incredible storylines, but I hope they don't use this in their 'acts' like they are always mentioning ''the divine intervention of Eddie Guerrero'' when one of his ex tag members saves himself. Think they go too far sometimes until it's just sick. That's the yanks for you I suppose.
