A couple of Tortoiseshell Butterflies on Nano Blue Buddleia.

And one of our Cordylines. This one stands almost 6ft.

As more of the Buddleias come into flower there should be more Butterfly pictures to come.

Thank God for this thread! It's proof that there actually IS a summer out there...somewhere.

Unfortunately we aren't getting more than a couple of days at a time before returning to the damp cool conditions !

What happens to the Butterflies with all this wet weather ?
You don't see them flying about and by now a lot should have mated and there should be caterpillars . Does it mean there'll be a shortage of Butterflies next year ?

Here is a new Butterfly to my garden ,it's a Holly Blue.
Unfortunatly the one time it opened it's wings I wasn't ready and when I moved to get a better shot it flew off.

Next we seem to have a few pairs of Wrens in or near the garden. I've spotted where one pair is nesting.

Here's a few more from today.
Not much choice at present with the Butterflies.

First is a Ringlet

Next two are Tortoiseshell

Last is the first rose on a new bush.

Looking at the petals there have started dividing as if the rose was going to be a double but it doesn't show in the picture.

Oh, the rose is gorgeous. Reminds me that I must visit the Botanical Gardens in Dublin, in a while.

I like the angle of your photos of the Holly Blue - I can really see the butterfly's face!

The angle on the first Tortoiseshell would've shown similar detail except the focus is on the wings rather than the face. I have one using this angle from last year of a Red Admiral which is sharp over all focus on the Buddleia ,the whole butterfly and you can clear see the details of the face and how it feeds.

The Holly Blue has quite a unique face ,those eyes look massive compared to the rest of the face.
I don't know how many of them there are or whether it was the same one that kept appearing all day. But I'd have loved to get a picture of it with the wings open.

The Blue that got me the cup last year is so different to this one and equally difficult to find resting with the wings open.

I like depth of colour in the rose ,in fact I think it's better than the usual bush (see previous pictures).

Also discovered that my camera can't count !
With the memory card empty the display says it'll hold 266 pictures in Raw format but after taking 98 today it said 194 left.

Lets hope the forecast is wrong and we get some fine days this week as I'm on holiday from Tuesday through Friday.

With all the shrubs and flowers the scent is very rich in the main part of the garden which is normally full of Butterflies but the rain has drastically reduced the numbers this year.
