New Medical Drama For ITV

A new six-part medical drama has been commissioned for ITV1.

With the working title Harley Street, the six-part drama will tell the stories of a team of high-flying GPs and look at a world in which 'ordinary people' are turning towards private practices.

The series will be made by Carnival Films and has been written by Marston Bloom.

Carnival managing director Gareth Neame said: "Most medical dramas are based in the political environment of the NHS. This is a relationship-led show. There are medical stories each week, but it is more of a character and workplace drama, but with the medical element the audience enjoys."

Classic FM blurs pop boundaries

MediaGuardian.co.uk

Classic FM has signed Blur bass player Alex James to present a show looking at how classical music has influenced pop.

The Britpop star turned newspaper columnist and organic farmer will front When Classic Meets Pop, a three-part series beginning on the GCap music station on August 4.

It is the latest addition to the When Classic Meets ... series, which has previously featured Rick Wakeman and Courtney Pine looking at the influence of classical music on rock and jazz music.

"Why would I want to listen to Hard-Fi piffling around when there is Rossini?" said James. "Bring me cellos. Bring me French horns. Bring me a choir. And some cannons, maybe, for the end."

Classic FM, which was named station of the year at this year's Sony awards, attracted an audience of 5.71 million in the first three months of the year, according to the latest Rajars.

The Classic FM managing director, Darren Henley, said: "As a founder member of one of Britain's foremost pop groups, Alex is uniquely placed to chart the influence classical music has had on the genre."

When Classic Meets Pop will feature classically inspired songs such as Barry Manilow's Could It Be Magic, Eric Carmen's All By Myself and The Farm's Altogether Now.

Viewers Will Vote In Talent Drama

Viewers of a new ITV1 drama based on an X-Factor-type television talent show will get the chance to vote for the winning act.

Producers of Rock Rivals will film two endings before the audience chooses the winning act.

The drama, out later this year, then becomes real as the top act will then see its record released.

Simon Cowell is a consultant on the series and the actors taking part have been chosen for their singing ability.

Actors Michelle Collins and Sean Gallagher will star as a bickering husband and wife who both sit on the judging panel. et.

Rock Rivals is being made by Shed Productions, the company behind Footballers' Wives and Bad Girls.

Shed's managing director Brian Park said: "Rock Rivals has a real buzz to it and promises to be a worthy successor to Footballers' Wives - a combination of wild characters and pacey plots set against a world of ruthless ambition."

Sally Haynes, controller of network drama at ITV, described the series as "a modern, fun drama that transports us backstage into the heady and fabulous extremes of the music business".

ITV Halts RDF Productions

ITV said it will not commission any new shows from production firm RDF Media until an inquiry into a misleading trailer for a programme about the Queen is completed.

RDF has accepted blame for a "serious error of judgement" in the promotional film it made for a BBC documentary which was edited out of sequence.

S statement from the company said: "RDF has been informed by ITV that no new programmes will be commissioned before and subject to the publication of the independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the BBC's autumn press launch."

The BBC has also halted commissions from the firm, although RDF said that it was "confident" that this would change in the future.

Channel 4 said it was standing by RDF Media. A spokesman said the company was a "longstanding and valued supplier" of Channel 4 and that it saw no reason to suspend their relationship.

Film24 Goes Round The Clock

Pinewood Studios-based channel Film24 has been given the go-ahead to broadcast 24 hours a day on the BSkyB platform after it acquired an EPG slot earlier this year.

The channel acquired satellite drama channel Bonanza TV from now defunct participation TV group Optimistic Entertainment and is now available on channel 158.

Under Sky rules Film24 had to wait 90 days before it could change the content of the channel and the name on the EPG. Film24 had been on air for around six hours a day on the channel transmitting the old Bonanza content but is now available 24 hours on channel 158.

The channel is aimed at film enthusiasts.

Motorcycle Cop Couldn't Drive

Actor Erik Estrada has admitted to spending years illegally driving through California for hit TV show CHiPs - because he never had a motorcycle licence.

The former TV cop - who played Officer Francis Llewellyn Poncherello in the cult TV show - said he faked speeding along the California Highways in the 1970s show.

Eventually, Estrada had to pass his test for a recent appearance in the US reality show, Back To The Grind in which actor try out the roles they portrayed on television.

Estrada said it took him three attempts to pass his motorbike test.

He added: "It's much harder in real life than when you act."

Ofcom - Premium Line Call Changes

Waveguide - OfcomOfcom has today proposed to adapt broadcasters' licences to include premium rate phone line responsibilities and will also require third party verification of all participation TV (PTV) activity.

PTV relates to phone-in quizzes in which viewers call premium rate phone services (PRS) numbers to enter from home.

The regulator said today that an inquiry lead by Richard Ayre had been concluded and a series of recommendations had been made intended to ensure that audiences, including those who choose to participate, are adequately protected.

The inquiry’s key recommendation was that broadcasters should be held directly responsible, under their broadcasting licences, for PRS compliance throughout the supply chain.

The Inquiry also recommended that broadcasters be required under the broadcasting licences to undertake an independent third party audit. Ofcom agrees that some form of independent third party verification is essential.

The regulator said they changes were to ensure "fair and consistent treatment for all those participating in programmes, such as voting and entering competitions".

The show's changes will continue to be rolled out over the next 12 months.

NBC Sued Over Man's Death

The sister of a former US state prosecutor who killed himself after he was targeted by a television show as a suspected paedophile is suing NBC Universal for £50m.

Louis William Conradt, 56, shot himself in November 2006 after he was confronted at his Texas home by police, whom the lawsuit said were carrying television cameras for a To Catch a Predator segment of NBC's Dateline programme.

To Catch a Predator involves Dateline and Internet watchdog Perverted Justice luring suspected paedophiles to a "sting house" by using online decoys. NBC has said Conradt had contacted a decoy posing as a 13-year-old boy.

But Conradt did not visit the "sting house" the show set up in Murphy, Texas. The lawsuit said 24 men were lured to the Murphy house and arrested, but no charges were brought as a result of the operation.

The lawsuit, filed by Patricia Conradt on behalf of Conrad's estate, accuses NBC's Dateline of "steam-rolling" police to arrest Conradt, a retired district attorney for Kaufman County.

The lawsuit said police and members of the Dateline crew travelled to Conradt's house "with neither a search warrant nor an arrest warrant" that met legal standards.

"Both police officers and other members of the party were wearing cameras ... very large cameras, on the cutting edge of technology, that normally are worn only by television reporters," the lawsuit said.

"They were met by (Conradt). He told them 'I'm not gonna hurt anyone' and shot himself. Then a police office said to a Dateline producer, 'That'll make good TV.' Death was an hour later," it said.

NBC Universal said it had not yet received the lawsuit.

"But we plan to defend ourselves vigorously as we believe the claims in the suit to be completely without merit," it said in a statement.

This is the second lawsuit filed against NBC in the last three months over the Dateline predator series. In May, the show's former producer, Marsha Bartel, sued the network, alleging she was fired after she raised ethical concerns about the show's methods.

Coronation Street - Former Actor Robbed

The family of former Coronation Street star Nicholas Cochrane, who played Andy McDonald, have been through a 'horrific ordeal', following a robbery on Friday.

Three men entered his Manchester home and took assorted personal belongings. His wife, mother-in-law and children were at the house, and the women were injured when they confronted the thieves just after midnight.

Cochrane's wife grazed her knee while trying to prevent one man entering her child's bedroom.

In the struggle, Cochrane's mother-in-law sustained a cut to the top of her leg.

"My family have been through a horrific ordeal that we are all trying to come to terms with," said Nicholas in a statement.

"This must have been a terrifying ordeal for the victims who were hurt when they attempted to confront the burglars," remarked Detective Inspector Mark Radford.

Nicholas joined the cast of Coronation Street in 1989, and was a regular character until 1997 and returned for guest appearances in 2000 and 2004.

GMTV Chief Resigns

Waveguide - GMTV logoGMTV's managing director Paul Corley has resigned after it was revealed that competitions on his breakfast show were not being conducted fairly.

Corley appeared on the show in April to apologise to viewers after an investigation found some quiz entrants had no chance of winning.

He said he hoped his resignation, along with a series of new initiatives, would help "restore trust" in GMTV.

He will remain in his post until a number or measures have been implemented as a result of the competition debacle.

"We would like to apologise unreservedly again for the occurrence of these errors," said Corley.

"It is important that people take responsibility when mistakes are made that threaten the trust of our viewers.

"We know that competitions are popular with our viewers and GMTV hopes to bring them back when the right controls are in place."

Anyone who believes they may have been affected can contact GMTV free of charge on the internet or phone to apply for a refund.

The package of measures announced will see 250 free prize draws held at the end of August for affected entrants, each with a £10,000 prize, as well as refunds. A £250,000 donation will be made to children's charity Childline.

Opera Telecom, GMTV's former service provider, will be contributing towards the costs of remedies, the station said.

GMTV also announced a number of new strict measures for the management of future premium rate "interactivity", including the appointment of a compliance officer who will have specific responsibility for ensuring the processes for premium rate service are followed correctly, both internally and externally.

There will also be regular inspections of any outside companies and no premium rate competition will conclude within the same daily programme. All competition finalists and winners will be randomly selected by GMTV employees in GMTV offices.

High Wycombe Station Gets Warning

High Wycombe and Amersham station Mix 107 has been given a "yellow card warning" by regulator Ofcom for a breach of formatting regulations.

Ofcom said the Local Radio Company-owned station was not fulfilling the conditions of its licence by failing to run specialist Asian-Caribbean music programming.

The Local Radio Company's Mix 107, which broadcasts to Amersham and High Wycombe, has received a "yellow card warning" from Ofcom following a breach of formatting regulations.

The regulator told it to conform to the licence conditions in April and the station said it would. However, spot sampling reports on May 13 and June 10 revealed Mix 107 was still not broadcasting the programming that it was licensed for

The station admitted its failings and Ofcom issued a yellow card warning because of "a serious breakdown in compliance/operational procedure or a lack of commitment to meeting specific obligatory aspects of the Mix 107 format."

Suffragette Drama For Channel 4

Writer Peter Kosminsky has been commissioned by Channel 4 to make a new drama called Terrorists which will look at the lives of the Pankhurst sisters and the moment the suffragettes movement turned to violence.

Kosminsky said: "In the run-up to the Great War, the Liberal government reneged on its promise to give parliamentary time for women's suffrage legislation.

"Betrayed and humiliated, the leadership of the Votes for Women campaign turned to violence to regain the initiative. They broke windows and burnt down Cabinet ministers' homes in pursuit of the right to vote.

He added: "It's chilling and instructive to realise that, under new legislation brought in by the Blair government, these campaigners would be branded terrorists."

Terrorists will be made by Daybreak Pictures in association with Kosminsky's own independent production company, Stonehenge Films.

60 SECONDS: Matt Groening

Former journalist and print cartoonist Matt Groening is the creator of The Simpsons. Since it first launched as a series of short cartoons for The Tracey Ullman Show 20 years ago, Groening, 53, has steered the cartoon through 18 full seasons and now its first full-length spin-off movie, which he co-wrote. The Simpsons Movie is out today.

Why did it take so long to make The Simpsons Movie?

One of the reasons is that The Simpsons were created in 1987. So that’s 20 years. We’ve just passed our 400th episode. I thought that this was a landmark time. It was a ‘nowor- never’ situation.

After years of making episodic shows, was it hard to do The Simpsons in movie form?
We tell a feature-length story every episode of the show. So it has been a challenge, given how much story we can compress into a TV show. There’s more ambitious animation and a more epic story here.

There’s a scene where Bart skateboards naked through town. Weren’t the studio bosses less than happy about this?
The only thing they were worried about was that we would not get a PG rating. No one who sees this can possibly be offended by Bart naked.

Are you surprised the series has lasted so long?

Are you kidding? It’s just insane. It’s more than one a day for a whole year. But it’s great. I have a finite amount of memory and I have forgotten some of the past episodes, so now I can tune in to the show during re-runs and go: ‘Ooh, what’s going to happen next?’

Do you ever consider it might end?
Several years ago I did an interview in which I speculated on that same question and I talked about the first rule of Zen: nothing is permanent. It became a big fuss and I learned how much it upset people – the idea that The Simpsons might end. The attitude I have is that there is no end in sight.

We almost reunited The Beatles – apart from a few separating years and continents

Do you really most identify with Comic Book Guy out of all the Simpsons characters?
I can definitely relate to his completely unjustified snootiness. He makes me laugh every time he’s on screen, which is a tribute to Hank Azaria, who is the voice of Comic Book Guy. We didn’t have anything in mind but the voice that came out of Hank’s mouth completely defined the character.

Who has been your favourite celebrity guest voiceover?

The biggest thrill for me was having Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr on at different times. We almost reunited The Beatles – apart from a few separating years and continents.

Which Beatle was best?

George Harrison was a real delight. I didn’t think he would do the show. He recorded in a small studio in West LA and he came in alone and didn’t seem particularly interested in answering our questions about The Beatles. Then I mentioned loving his solo album Wonderwall Music and his face lit up and he became very expansive. So I made George Harrison smile.

What is your favourite piece of Simpsons merchandise?
We made two full-size Simpsons pinball machines. They make me pretty happy. I have one in my office. I love it because it seems like an outmoded form of technology. Little children, who are all used to video games, are delighted by it – there’s actual physics and gravity involved!

You named Homer after your dad, who was a print cartoonist. Did he ever consider animation?
I asked him about that. I said: ‘Dad, why don’t you get into animation?’ And he said: ‘No, it’s too difficult. The only way to make animation work is to get other people to do the hard work for you.’

He also made surf movies. Did you take up the sport?
I still have the surfboard that I learned how to surf on when I was a child. Surfing is hard. I had to learn in Oregon where the water was extremely cold, which was really no fun. My dad wanted me to love surfing and had me outfitted in a wetsuit that was three sizes too big so I would grow into it. That’s no good. A loose wetsuit defeats the purpose, so I was very, very cold.

Pamela Anderson Gives Up TV

Pamela Anderson is giving up her television work - because she prefers her new job as a magician's assistant.

The former Baywatch beauty has been starring alongside illusionist Hans Klok at his Las Vegas magic show - and she is considering making it a permanent job.

She said: "I'm definitely staying until December, but then who knows. I don't want to do any more TV or film though. Doing (The Beauty of Magic) is what I love - it's just so over the top."

Cash In The Attic Fake Claim

An edition of the BBC's daytime programme Cash In The Attic was faked, according to today's News of the World.

The newspaper said that a man shown bidding £600 for an old doorstop was not even AT the auction, and he complained he was made to look a fool because the item was only worth £150.

Bob Warman, 60, told the paper: "Cash In The Attic should be renamed Con In The Attic. It's complete fiction. The doorstop's carved like a lion. I wouldn't bid anything for it, let alone £600."

It is claimed that shots of Warman bidding at a different auction for an antique table were edited into the show by programme makers Leopard Films.

It looked as if he had won a frantic bidding battle for the doorstop on the long-running show, presented by Angela Rippon.

Warman, who is a local television newsreader, added: "I was bidding for the table and was aware that there was a film crew there, but I did not know them and was not aware that I was being filmed.

"When the programme was shown I was called by friends who said I had been filmed putting my hand up to bid.

"The way it had been cut it looked like I was bidding for some old doorstop and bidding £600 for it, which just wasn't true.

"It cut across to the family selling the doorstep showing them rubbing their hands with glee and looking across at the bidder—who was supposed to be me—as if I was some kind of idiot.

"I wasn't even there. They had just edited me in from the other auction. It is disgusting. They sliced up sections of the edits like salami and just put them together to create what they wanted even if it wasn't true."

The programme makers also edited footage to make it appear he had been bidding for other items, including a carriage clock.

He added: "I have been in TV for 34 years and I would not want to believe that anyone would do this.

"It is totally unethical. Even friends of mine in the BBC came up to me to tell me privately they were disgusted at what had happened.

"The programme is still being sold around the world. I had one call from a friend in South Africa who said he saw it.

"These are not isolated incidents. It is arrogant behaviour and not acceptable from our state broadcaster."

The Queen Wants BBC Film Banned

The Queen wants the BBC to drop the film promoted by a trailer which wrongly showed her storming out of a photo session, The Mail on Sunday claimed today.

The BBC was forced to apologise to the Queen two weeks ago after admitting that the trailer shown to members of the press was misleading.

The BBC said it would ensure the final edit of the programme, A Year With The Queen, would not mislead viewers, but indicated it would still be broadcast as planned in the autumn.

But the Palace is reported by The Mail On Sunday to have protested, claiming that neither they nor the viewing public could have any confidence in the film, and called for it to be cancelled.

The newspaper said the BBC has promised the Queen that the programme will be edited in strict accordance with its rules on fairness and accuracy.

BBC Two Programmes For Teens

BBC Two is planning to launch a block of programming aimed at teenagers this autumn.

The block will consist of acquired and commissioned content and will feature primarily entertainment and drama. It will also feature a news bulletin made specifically for teenagers.

Bear Grylls Faked Scenes

There have been further claims today that survival expert Bear Grylls faked scenes for his series Born Survivor, made by the Discovery Channel anmd shown on Channel 4.

A member of the production crew said Grylls faked a bear attack by getting a colleague to dress up as one in a bear suit.

Grylls was then filmed creeping out of a tent in a bear-infested forest, nervously looking at a shadow moving a few yards away.

Ron Hood, an advisor to the series, said programme makers asked him to find a bear suit when plans to hire a tame grizzly for the shot fell through.

He added: “They decided they wanted to somehow dramatise the attack on the shelter.”

A Discovery spokesman said the bear outfit was hired as a prank by the crew and no footage which included the bear costume was included in the programme.

60 SECONDS: Griff Rhys Jones

Griff Rhys Jones made his name as a comedian in the 1980s with Not The Nine O'Clock News and Alas Smith And Jones with comedy sidekick Mel Smith. More recently, he's earned acclaim for Semi-Detached, the memoir of his childhood. Jones is currently presenting Mountain on BBC1 on Sundays. A book of the same name is available now, published by Penguin.

Why have you suddenly decided to walk up mountains?

I was asked to. It was a job and I’m a man for hire. It got me out out of the office.

Did it wear you out?
Yes, it involved a great deal of strenuous activity. I had to run halfway up Ben Nevis and climb up Napes Needle. I coped with it all quite well. They were expecting me to break down in tears but I didn’t. I had to climb 15 mountains and I didn’t fake any of it. I want to point out now I helped build a snow hole but I didn’t sleep in it.

What do you make of the faked-documentary controversy?

The reason why people supposedly fake it is because of budgets. You don’t have the time to actually do all the things you have to cover. It’s probably down to budgetary considerations rather than any desire to cheat.

What was your favourite view?

The best view of all was from the top of Tryfan in Wales because the weather was so good. The top of Suilven in Sutherland [in the Scottish Highlands] was mind-boggling. I couldn’t believe you could get such a vista in Britain. Just mile after mile of mountains covered in snow with no evidence of any human beings.

Was it a spiritual experience?
Yes, I certainly had a spiritual and physical experience. The mixture of the two was absolutely fantastic. The programme was a great thing to do.

I’m not Ray Mears – I’m just a slightly creaky 53-year-old who was chosen because they wanted a mountain virgin

Will you be doing more programmes like this?
I’m not Ray Mears or Bear Grylls – I’m just a slightly creaky 53-year-old who was chosen because they wanted a mountain virgin. If I haven’t done something before, I like to try it now. I was much more stuck in my ways 20 years ago.

Your memoir’s done very well. Was it an honour to get it in Richard and Judy’s book club?

Yes, I looked around and thought: ‘The rest of these books are proper books.’ I wrote mine just because I thought I’d give it a whirl. It sold incredibly well. It’s a damn good book. Even if I hadn’t had the Richard and Judy experience, it was very gratifying for it to be so well received by serious reviewers.

Is it a nice change?
It’s nice that it’s all my own work. Television is very collaborative and, with a programme such as Mountain, I’m just the frontman for a huge team of very talented people. The book was all my own work.

Is it odd to have so many people knowing everything about your childhood?

It is a bit but I get a lot of letters. Out of everything I’ve done in my life, the letters I get about the book are the most rewarding. Reading a book is a very intimate experience, so it’s gratifying when people I don’t know write to me and say how much it’s helped them put a perspective on their own life. I’m very touched when people write to me or congratulate me. It’s funny to be taken seriously after all these years.

Will you be doing a second volume?

No. Originally, the book was a bit longer but we decided it should all be about childhood. When you start writing about people everybody knows – I’ve been in entertainment since I was 22 – it changes. It suddenly becomes that you’re writing about stories you’ve told before rather than plunging into the mists of memory and sorting out a thread.

Do you still see Mel Smith? Or have you had a big showbiz feud?

Oh no, I saw him the other day. We stay together for the sake of the money.

Who is your least likely celebrity friend?

I was a big pal of John Peel’s. People find that a bit odd. I’m not into obscure bands but we were neighbours in Suffolk and he was a big fan of Not The Nine O’Clock News, so I got to know him quite well. People were always surprised we knew each other.

Do you get mistaken for Michael Palin a lot?

Yes. I also get mistaken for Hugh Laurie. Once, Melvyn Bragg called his daughter over when he saw me in a restaurant to introduce her to her hero John Sessions. And he ended up with three extremely embarrassed people.

You appeared on Stephen Fry’s programme about his depression. Is he always popping round your house when he’s a bit moody?
No, but we’re very old friends. He came to my wife’s birthday party the day before he ran away and went missing back in the 1990s. The party wasn’t that bad. If he needs to be cheered up, maybe I’m not the most obvious choice. I’m quite an acerbic person. I’m not really known to be Mr Cheering-people-up.

You sold your production company for £62million. What have you spent the money on?
Like everyone else, I like houses. I’m sure that I’ve deprived several young people of the opportunity of making their way up the housing ladder. I bought a boat as a present to myself. It’s a very beautiful boat. It’s a classic racing yacht. I raced it at a regatta the other week and she came fourth, so I was very pleased with that. Metro
