Affordable is the key. There are some awesome Mercs available at keen money if you're prepared to go back a bit (mid-90s) but like I say, there's really awesome stuff available. If something smaller would suit, why not try a Golf Convertible. You have to be sure it's a good one and not a botched up job. I think Ian Grange at http://www.oldtimermanchester.co.uk has one in his current stock.

Are you keen on having quite a new model, or are you prepared to go a bit older?

I don't really mind how old it is. I would like something fun, a bit unusual looking (which is why I liked the look of yours) and I would like it to be a convertible.

When you look around for cars, do you go and see them or would you consider buying it unseen (apart from pics) from a reputable dealer? I was jus thinking that you would be in a similar situation to me (ie living on an island), so it wouldn't be practical to just drive somewhere to have a look at a car.

CT posted something a while back, about a Nissan and I really liked the look of that one. I can't remember the model (or find the post) but it was only made in one year, came in lilac or pale green and looked a bit vintage looking. I loved the look of that and had kinda thought that it what I would go for, til I saw the pic you posted.

I wasn't planning ot get it for a few months yet, so I have a bit of time to research it and it doesn't have to be really practical (though I do want to be able to get all 3 kids in it), as I will keep my Chrysler for the practical excursions.

I just googled it and it was the Nissan Figaro.

Yep, Nissan Figaro - only available c.1991, you'll be looking at either H- or J-reg. You can get one for under £3k but there are special editions and weird paintjobs you'll find even up to £8-9k. You might even pick up a barely-used more recent import.

They are a cute wee buggy, and the thing is because they're based on Micra mechanicals (afair) they'll be pretty reliable.

Bear in mind though, it's not a convertible in the typical sense of the term. In other words, the whole roof doesn't fold down, but the centre section does retract.

I looked at that Golf on the link you posted, but didn't fancy it. It's a bit too boxy looking. I can be such a girl at times. I really do want something a bit unusual looking.

Thanks for the link anyway.

I know what you mean. There's lots of stuff available that's pretty cool and nifty-looking.

What about an Alfa Romeo GTV drophead?

I've googled it and can only find pics of a GTV. I'm not sure what the drophead bit refers to. The GTV looks lovely, but is probably a bit bigger than what I was hoping for, though maybe I am misjudging the size in the pics I have seen. I would like something smallish, so its easy to park and Jersey roads aren't really built for wide cars. I spend my life reversing into laybys.

Thanks for the advice though. Much appreciated.

I'd suggest a Suzuki Cappuccino for tininess, but it's only got two seats. Looks like the Figaro might fit the bill.

An Austin Healey Sprite! Especially the frog-eye ones. They are a little bit like the Figaros.

Only two seats but gorgeous.

Over the moon with "Life On Mars" car

It was the coolest British TV show in years – and now the best part of Life On Mars has been sold for £10,000.
