Idol finalist back on X Factor

POP Idol finalist Hayley Evetts is to sing in front of acid-tongued Simon Cowell AGAIN — this time on The X Factor.

She will come face-to-face with judge Simon after getting through the first round of the ITV1 talent contest.

The blonde singer, 30, turned up at “culling” auditions, where producers whittle down the hopefuls before the judges step in. She has just been axed from playing Sandy in a touring production of Grease — to make way for the winners of ITV1’s Grease Is The Word.

True Life: My X-Factor experience

UKPL member AJ, from Bishops Stortford, went to the X-Factor auditions in London. Here's her experience.

Despite friends and family thinking we’d gone mad, my friend Sarah and I decided to audition for X-Factor. We went for the whole experience and thought we’d have a fun day and a good time. How wrong we were.

LOUIS' X AND MAKE UP
Cowell lures him back with £1m to buck up show

LOUIS Walsh is to return to The X Factor - three months after he was booted off the show.

Simon Cowell persuaded the Irishman back with a £1million offer.

Walsh, 54, will replace Brian Friedman, who was brought in to take his place.

It marks a huge U-turn for Cowell, 47, who decided to axe Walsh and was accused of "knifing him in the back".

The two were publicly reunited last month during filming of a This Is Your Life special about Cowell. An ITV source said: "Simon was touched that Louis appeared and thought he might have been hasty in dumping him.

"He has had to eat a rather large portion of humble pie but was prepared to do it to get Louis back." Last night Walsh told the Mirror he was delighted to return, but at first he thought the offer was a prank.

He said: "I got called today and didn't know if it was a wind-up at first. But I'm absolutely delighted to be back.

"I've missed the gang, especially Sharon. Me, Simon and Sharon have a chemistry no one else has.

Cowell said: "If I'm honest I have missed Louis a bit and I think the show has missed him too.

"He is ecstatic about being back on the show. I'm sure he'll be a bit smug when he gets there but we are still looking for talent. He has a job to do."

A source said: "Brian is not going to be a judge any more. He's going to be the show's creative guru." Cowell added: "Brian is much happier now."

Walsh will join the others at auditions in Manchester on Monday as the show nears its autumn return.

The X Factor 2007

THE sun may be out at last but autumn is fast approaching in TV land.

One sure sign is the return of The X Factor.

It’s back on Saturday August 18 for what is billed as “an even bigger and better fourth series”.

Judges Simon Cowell and Sharon Osbourne are joined by a re-instated Louis Walsh and new addition Dannii Minogue.

And following the controversial decision to replace Kate Thornton, main ITV1 presenting duty now falls to Dermot O’Leary.

As ever, the best bits of The X Factor are in the early audition shows.

Set The Video: The X Factor, ITV1, Saturday 18 August, 7.40pm

Image

Here comes the 2007 series of The X Factor and although those changes have been well and truly rung, the basic format remains the same. There might be an extra category, there may well be an extra judge, there could easily have been changes of creative director and host, but there are no surprises here except the usual ones: the unplumbed depths of self-deception enjoyed by most of the auditionees, the weekly sob story and the endless repeats of Flying Without Wings.

They're doing something right though. According to ITV, The X Factor is the UK’s most popular entertainment show and this fourth series looks like being the biggest so far. So will you be one of those ten million or so tuning in? Or did you go one better this year and queue for hours in the audition line-ups?

This year the show's three infamous judges, Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh, are joined by new panel member Dannii Minogue. With four judges, we need four categories, and they shape up like this: the youngsters category, now expanded youthwards to include 14-24s, have been split into boys' and girls' groups while the other two categories - 25 & Overs and Groups - remain unchanged.

Dermot O’Leary takes over as host, waiting outside the door for the flash of a boot camp certificate or alternatively providing a shoulder to cry on, and doing his best to keep a lid on the spouting opinions of the judging panel.

We have, as usual, endured weeks of media hype leading up to the start of the show - the ongoing sniping between Louis and Simon; Sharon's declarations of intent to leave unless she wins this time; etc; etc - and I wouldn't expect this to let up any time soon. This show thrives on any and all publicity as it grinds to the inevitable crowning of one of the half-decent singers in the bunch.

Winners of The X Factor have had chequered careers at best. Can you even remember their names? Last year’s winner Leona Lewis had a number one with her single ‘A Moment Like This’ and since then has gone very quiet, although her debut album is due out in November - almost a year after her X Factor win. Runner up Raymond Quinn reached the top of the album charts with his debut album, has a solo tour coming up in October and has also appeared as a panellist on Baby Ballroom. tvscoop

X Factor Shots Faked

ITV's director of entertainment admitted today that some scenes in the talent show were staged "to get the story right".

Speaking at the launch of the new series, Paul Jackson said: "Occasionally, we have to go back and re-shoot something,"

The shots were recreated because cameras missed them first time around, he said.

The executive insisted that nothing would go out on air that was misleading and added that any major alterations would be made clear to viewers.

"We tell stories, we don't tell lies," Jackson added.

The new series starts on Saturday with Dermot O'Leary taking over as host and singer Danii Minogue joining the judging panel.

The love Factor for Fearne
By Mark Jefferies

X Factor contestants will be encouraged to date each other by new co-host Fearne Cotton.

The roving reporter revealed: "A lot of the people waiting to audition are single and bored.

"So I wander around and try to set people up.

It's fun and takes their minds off being nervous."

And Fearne, who fronts the hit ITV show with Dermot O'Leary when it starts on Saturday, even persuaded new judge Dannii Minogue to take part.

But the one person single Dannii is likely to turn down for a date is Simon Cowell ... unless he gets a new hairstyle.

Dannii will join Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh as judges.

This year categories will be: 14 to 24 Girls; 14 to 24 Boys; 25 and overs plus Groups. Each contestant must get three Yes votes to reach Bootcamp.

There judges will work together to pick six from each category to take to the next stage where they will each mentor a section.

They will then pick their three favourite acts to represent them at live studio shows.

Cowell's Pussycat siX factor

SIMON Cowell’s greatest hope for the new series of X Factor is six girls who FAILED their first auditions, TV Biz can reveal.

Behind the scenes on The X Factor
Sitting in The X Factor audition room, waiting for the next poor sod to walk through the swing doors and stand on the silver X and stare down at Simon, Sharon, Louis and now Dannii - all I can report to you is that the reality is far, far more brutal than what is seen on TV.

A rare chance to go behind the scenes on the ITV1 show during auditions in Birmingham took me into the holding room, where anxious contestants awaited their call-up, then into the green room where Simon Cowell was blow drying his hair and then finally into the dreaded audition room itself.

You can listen here to my report on the day - including interviews with Simon Cowell himself and Louis Walsh - to get you in the mood for the show. And here's a photo gallery giving you a peek behind the scenes.

I would like to tell you that watching the good people of Birmingham fronting up and having a go taught me about such stuff as dreams are made of - but in real life it was much more about the power of nightmares.

Of all the contestants I spent time with that day - and there were quite a few - I thought that one had perhaps a chance to making it on the strength of his singing - until Simon bluntly drew attention to what he termed "your personality issue".

One of the first up in front of the judges was Emma, a 25-year-old pub and club singer, who in my total ignorance I actually thought was reasonably good. Not so. She over-sang, was criticised, got lippy and then pretty much turfed out and accused of dressing like a ****. "Take care of your voice," new judge Danii Minogue tried to advise kindly.

Then there was Albert. I had long suspected that there was an element of a set-up with some acts that appeared on this programme. But cheery Albert dispelled all of that. Coming in he was all smiles, wearing his woollen vest and flat cap and looking 10 years older than his 35 years. His exit, shoulders drooping, after his attempt at of Cliff Richard's Summer Holiday was one of the longest, loneliest, saddest walkouts I have seen.

But minutes later, outside with his friends, he had bounced back. He had "thoroughly enjoyed" his time on the X Factor, such as it was, and was full of plans for his theatre group.

I had always thought that only Jesus and Elvis were referred to by their first names, but on The X Factor there is Simon.

Mr Cowell was, as is his apparent habit, the last of the judges to arrive. In real life he seems slightly shorter than on TV but with an even bigger chest, if that is humanly possibly. Calm and considered, he promised "I'll be honest with you" that this year the judges would check their egos at the door and this year it would be all about the contestants.

Little could he know (in fact, knowing Simon, he probably did know) that not 30 minutes earlier Louis Walsh had already been scheming how he and Sharon would form an alliance against Simon and Dannii.

Producing a modern TV programme like is a colossal undertaking, the 21st century equivalent of the great cotton mills of the north, involving hundreds of black-clad production assistants welded to their head sets running this way and that. The results will be on Saturday nights on ITV1 from here until Christmas.

I'm just sorry that on screen you'll miss the little slices of life such as the executive producer shouting at Simon to "get a move on" and Fearne Cotton shedding her vintage red frock and standing in the green room in her petticoat.

Watch out for 17-year-old Kimberley, who'd decided that Simon was going to be her "boyfriend" with predictable results. She sang country and western for the judges in memory of her late brother. But it wasn't enough, and she was heading for the exit doors until a 20 second burst of Show Me Heaven forced the judges to utterly change their minds and send her to bootcamp.

Up in Birmingham all human life was there - and they choose to put themselves through it.

All we can to do is watch.

ITV pledges X Factor will be the real thing

ITV has been forced to pledge that the new series of its hit talent show The X Factor will not mislead viewers in its editing in the wake of the scandals that have rocked the television industry.

The last series of the singing reality series, in which Simon Cowell appears as an acid-tongued judge, was formally reprimanded by the premium phone lines regulator, Icstis, in April after overcharging viewers who voted by £200,000.

The show is also part of the current review of a number of ITV series accused of misleading viewers being undertaken by consultants Deloitte which was ordered by executive chairman Michael Grade.

Paul Jackson, head of entertainment at ITV, admitted that the new series, which begins on Saturday, uses "tricks of our profession", although these were not done to deceive.

"All of us in entertainment at ITV take this issue of trust very seriously," he said. "I don't think we have ever done anything on these shows to mislead people. We are entertainment programme makers - we tell stories, we don't tell lies."

Show bosses have admitted that some scenes involving the judges deciding what to do about bringing back former judge Louis Walsh were restaged, but Cowell said: "What you see is what happened. We don't try to censor this show. I've always said we will allow viewers to look through the keyhole and that's what we do. It's raw and we don't censor. It's not a sanitised, make-believe show."

Dermot: I have Kate's blessing

X Factor newcomers Dermot O'Leary and Dannii Minogue have been talking about the show, with new frontman Dermot revealing there was no bad feeling between him and previous presenter Kate Thornton.

Kate was ousted from her top telly role in a shake-up after the last series of the TV talent show and has since gone on to present ITV's junior dancing contest Baby Ballroom.
