Eurovision Dance Contest, BBC1 Saturday 01 September 8:00pm - 10:15pm

After all the variations on a ballroom dancing theme we've seen in recent years, it was inevitable that we'd eventually take a step - perhaps even a quickstep - back to a more traditional style of dancing show. And this is it. Billed as the biggest live televised dance competition in history, it features couples from 16 countries across Europe. Each pair choose to do either a ballroom or Latin routine, and then later in the show go freestyle with a "national" dance. There's a tinge of Eurovision Song Contest about the voting procedure, too (so in theory there could be some political voting here tonight), with viewers nominating their favourites - my money's on UK team Brendan Cole and Camilla Dallerup to win. But Terry Wogan won't be present. Instead, Graham Norton and Claudia Winkleman are our hosts.

Running order as follows:

01. Switzerland
02. Russia
03. The Netherlands
04. United Kingdom
05. Austria
06. Germany
07. Greece
08. Lithuania
09. Spain
10. Ireland
11. Poland
12. Denmark
13. Portugal
14. Ukraine
15. Sweden
16. Finland

It's a live Wink-up

Claudia Winkleman isn't someone who could be accused of having an out-of-control ego.

In fact, as she gears up to host the Eurovision Dance Contest with Graham Norton later this month, she's happy to point out her shortcomings.

"I only like live TV," she confesses. "I'm rubbish at all telly but I'm particularly rubbish at stuff you pre-record.

"I can't get excited, I can't even be bothered to put my contact lenses in. I just think, 'Well, no one is watching, so it doesn't count.'"Mirror

BREND'S DANCIN' ALONE

Strictly Come Dancing star Brendan Cole has told how dirty-dancing with Natasha Kaplinsky cost him his fiancee.

Former dance partner Camilla Dallerup, 33, broke off their engagement after seeing him getting close to the newsreader.

Now sad Brendan, 31, is trying to win her back. He said: "We started fighting. I enjoy partying, but it's not as exciting as our relationship. I'd rather have that than parties."

Danish-born Camilla said: "It was painful to watch him dancing with Natasha. We began to fight.

"Ours was a beautiful story but it ended in a mess."

Brendan reunites with Natasha for the Eurovision Dance Contest to be shown on BBC1 on September 1.

60 SECONDS: Camilla Dallerup

Camilla Dallerup found fame on Strictly Come Dancing before her dance partner and boyfriend, Brendan Cole, dumped her for his then dance-mate Natasha Kaplinsky. Camilla made it to the semi-finals of Series 3 with new partner, chef James Martin. She teams up with Brendan again on Saturday night for the first-ever Eurovision Dance Contest, on BBC1 at 9pm.

Is the Eurovision Dance Contest a spoof?

No, it’s a serious competition. It’ll be similar to the Eurovision Song Contest and there are 16 countries involved. You’ll see professionals dancing together, amateurs dancing together and maybe even a professional dancing with a celebrity. You won’t know what to expect. There will be highly qualified couples from each country.

Can contestants do whatever crazy dance they want?

Each country has two dances. The first they choose themselves and the second should reflect their country, such as a Greek dance – a song that represents the country.

Does that mean you’re going to be morris dancing?

[Sighs] I’ve heard that before. We’re not sure if people watching in Europe would vote for that. We’re coming up with something more 2007.

People watch Eurovision for a laugh. Will there be drag queens and weirdos in the dancing version?
No, people will be taking it seriously. The people on the show will have done their own version of Strictly Come Dancing in their own countries. This will be a serious and quite cool version of Eurovision. I hope people will like it.

You’re teaming up with your ex Brendan Cole again. Are you looking forward to it?

Yes, it’s going to be a celebration of the eight years we had together and we’re going to put all our experiences and emotions into the rumba. It’s the first dance we’ll do.

The least gifted dancer?
That’s not a nice way of putting it but David Dickinson needed a lot of time

Did you laugh when he split up with Natasha Kaplinsky?

No.

Who was the least gifted celebrity you danced with on Strictly Come Dancing?

That’s not a nice way of putting it but David Dickinson needed a lot of time. Ray [Fearon] was the best dancer but he didn’t have a long journey. James [Martin] didn’t know anything about dancing but he had a fantastic journey and ended up being able to waltz and foxtrot at the end.

Do you sew the sequins on yourself?

No, I have all my stage clothes made for me in Surrey. I have some built-in pants, so I’m never in an embarrassing situation when I’m doing lifts.

Who would be your ideal celebrity partner?

David Beckham. He’d be amazing. I’d like to see if he could dance as well as he plays football.

Did James Martin give you any cooking tips?

Yes, he taught me how to cook a very nice risotto. Cooking’s a struggle for me; I still burn things.

What’s the best thing about coming from Denmark?

We have a lot of space there so when you’re a child, you can be outside and run around a lot. You’re not kept in a concrete city.

Are you patriotic?
Not for Denmark; my home is here now. I felt very proud when I had to hold the British flag up for the pictures for this contest.

What have you got coming up?

I don’t do competitions any more. I’ve just had my first acting role, which was in Basil Brush. I’d like to do more acting and presenting, anything to do with performing. Obviously, a dancer’s life isn’t forever and I’d like to continue to perform in some way. I love the adrenaline rush of being on stage.

How long have you got left?
It’s difficult to tell; you have to listen to what your body is telling you. Some people go on dancing until their mid-30s or 40s. It’s up to how the individual feels.

Are you feeling perky at the moment?

I’m feeling young, yes.

What is the worst job you’ve had?

When I was 15 years old in Denmark, I got a ‘modelling’ job. I was so thrilled but it turned out that I was to be a bellgirl in a department store. You know, like a bellboy. I had a silly round hat and an awful outfit and had to tell people where the car park was. My friends came to the store and I had to face them. ‘Oh, is this your modelling job?’ they said. I had taken the job, so I finished it to the best of my ability.

I'm looking forward to this - would rather have Ian partner Camilla than Brendan though.

::lol:: ::lol:: ::lol::

I can't stop laughing at Ireland coming 3rd - their first dance was mechanical, their second dance was good because of the 'River Dance' element but still not good enough for 3rd place. Russia, Lituania, Greece were much better as was the UK.

Finland deserved to win, beautiful dancing and accompanying music. Ukraine deserved second place.

The voting was all too similar to European Song Contest.....but I enjoyed it.

Eurovision Dance Champions

Finland tonight won the first ever Eurovision Dance Contest, which was held at BBC Television Centre in London.

Dancers Jussi Vaananen and Katja Koukkula, impressed voters across Europe with a paso doble followed by a moody freestyle dance, scored 132 points. Ukraine finished in second place with 121 points.

Irish duo Mick Donegan and Nicola Byrne - who performed a jive and a traditional dance - came third with 95 points. Poland, with 84 points, finished fourth, while Austria scored 74 points to finish fifth.

However the UK - represented by Strictly Come Dancing twosome Brendan Cole and Camilla Dallerup - failed to impress voters.

The pair - who danced a rumba and a freestyle routine to a medley of James Bond songs - finished in second last place with just 18 points.

They were saved from finishing bottom of the heap by Switzerland, who failed to score a single point.

Other countries participating in the show - hosted by Graham Norton and Claudia Winkleman - included Russia, Lithuania, Germany, Netherlands, Greece, Denmark, Sweden, Spain and Portugal.

::lol:: ::lol:: I thought Claudia and Grahame did a good job - lmao at Grahame's 'Irish Jive' comment and at 'some' of the funny comments from Len/Bruno throughout the show. Fair play to the contestants who actually incorporated traditonal dance/music of their countries in their 'freestyle' dance....Ireland, Russia to name a few.

Much as I love to watch Brendan & Camilla dance - they are not British. I think there should have been a British couple (even if it was only one of
the pair, like Ian Waite and Camilla, for example), representing the UK.

Maybe the fact there was nothing 'homegrown' about the UK's entry in this competion had something to do with them coming second last but I doubt that's the real reason.
