MADDIE WAS NOT TAKEN BY PAEDO

Madeleine McCann was NOT snatched by members of a child porn ring in Portugal, detectives said last night.

They ruled out that line of enquiry after failing to find her image among thousands of seized child porn pictures.

But police hunting four-year-old Madeleine are planning to carry out a new series of searches within a 10-mile radius of the family’s holiday apartment at Praia da Luz, on the Algarve coast.

Last week, we revealed how detectives had smashed Portugal’s biggest-ever paedophile ring after raiding 75 homes and businesses in an operation codenamed Predator.

They arrested 80 suspects and seized 148 computers packed with sickening movie clips and child porn photos.

Officers were ordered to examine the horrific photos for any trace of missing Madeleine, but failed to find her face among them.

A source close to the investigation said: “Theories are being examined and eliminated. Slowly the open doors are being closed.”

Last night, a pal of Gerry and Kate McCann, both 39, said: “They’re torn between relief that she’s not in the clutches of a paedophile ring and dismay that the investigation has hit yet another brick wall.”

The couple’s spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “It does sound as if one avenue of the investigation has been closed.

"Kate and Gerry are pleased to see the police continuing their inquiries. They just want Madeleine home safely.”

Over the next few days, detectives are planning to search the 10-mile area around the McCanns’ holiday apartment, including the Barragem da Bravura reservoir in Odiaxere.

They will focus on “hotspots” identified by mobile phone experts, who used satellite technology to pinpoint the location of the McCanns and their seven holiday pals when calls were placed in the days after Madeleine’s disappearance on May 3.

Police have accused mum Kate of accidentally killing her daughter after giving her sedatives to help her sleep. They allege that her husband Gerry then helped her dispose of the body.

The McCanns, of Rothley, Leics, deny any involvement in their daughter’s disappearance, claiming they are being framed by detectives.

McCanns face new claims over Maddie body

The McCanns are under fresh scrutiny

The parents of missing Madeleine McCann are facing fresh claims that evidence from their daughter's decomposing body was found in their hired car.

Sources in the Portuguese police allege their forensic test results show 'bodily fluid' from a corpse was found in the boot of the Renault Scenic hired by Kate and Gerry McCann nearly four weeks after 30-year-old Maddy went missing.

According to reports, the evidence was found on the underside of a carpet, indicating a body might have been deliberately hidden there.

It is understood police are now awaiting the results from further tests which could show whether the DNA belongs to Madeleine.

But sources close to the McCanns have dismissed the allegations insisting the couple are 'wholly innocent'.

The couple's spokesman Clarence Mitchell told the Evening Standard: 'I cannot comment on yet further, unsubstantiated reports.

'Nor are we allowed to speak because of Portuguese judicial secrecy laws on anything that appears to touch on the evidential nature of the case.'

But friends of the McCanns accused Portuguese police of waging 'a long-planned act of revenge for Briitish newspapers showing disrepect at the start of the investigation'.

One added: 'Police believe the criticism was inpired by the McCanns and these smears are na attempt to fight back.'

Persecution of Kate McCann
'She thinks they don't believe a thin mum'

Kate McCann has felt persecuted since being made a suspect over Madeleine's disappearance, her mother revealed yesterday.

And Susan Healy, Madeleine's grandmother, said Kate thinks more people would believe she's innocent if she had a fuller figure.

Pencil-thin Kate, 39, has told her mum: "If I weighed another two stone, had a bigger bosom and looked more maternal, people would be more sympathetic."

Susan, 61, said: "I think it is terrible that she's having to think like that.

"She does feel persecuted, not by the general public who have been supportive but by some sections of the media.

"She is not this person in control all the time. Kate is very sensitive and one of the most maternal people I know - she puts me to shame.

"Her life revolves around her children but now she's got to the point where she feels she is being persecuted.

"In her mind, if her two-year-old twins, Sean and Amelie, cry in public... it is all so crazy.

"All this stuff's going on inside my poor daughter, who has not done anything wrong.

"She and Gerry went to a restaurant that was just metres away from their apartment and part of the holiday complex - it was a terrible mistake but they did it out of naivety." Kate's health has given cause for concern but Susan insisted: "She's always had that build and has never carried any weight. But she does look very traumatised.

"It is unbearable for her to think about the possibility of never seeing Madeleine again.

"Kate and Gerry are as innocent as you or I.

"The perpetrator or perpetrators are still out there."

And she also revealed that her daughter and son-in-law Gerry, also 39, are having counselling.

She added: "I think they continually go back to the feeling that they can't afford to go to pieces because they have to keep trying to get their daughter back - that overrides everything."

Susan, of Liverpool, finds it hard to sleep. Her husband Brian said: "Anger keeps me going and there has been a lot to be angry about.

"I have heard nothing yet to convince me that Madeleine is not still alive."

Maddie's father talks of 'ongoing hope'

Madeleine McCann's father today reaffirmed his "ongoing hope" that his missing daughter will be found alive.

Gerry McCann used his internet blog to play down comments by the family's official spokesman suggesting that he and his wife, Kate, now believed there was a "probability" the four-year-old was dead.

He wrote: "Contrary to some other reports, Kate and I do not accept that Madeleine is 'probably' dead.

"We know it is a possibility. However, the fact there is no evidence Madeleine has been seriously harmed gives us ongoing hope that she will be found alive."

Mr McCann also welcomed the review of the case being carried out by Paulo Rebelo, the new head of the Portuguese police investigation.

In his latest blog entry on the official Find Madeleine website, he said: "The media frenzy is gradually subsiding, with just occasional unsubstantiated reports of 'evidence' appearing.

"It is very encouraging that Mr Rebelo's officers will be seemingly reviewing all the material in the inquiry, which will hopefully identify areas for further investigation."

Clarence Mitchell, the McCann family spokesman, told reporters yesterday: "Kate and Gerry are realistic enough to know that there is a probability she is dead.

"They have not given up hope that she is still alive and is being looked after somewhere. But human nature is that you always fear the worst and they need to know what has happened."

He also dismissed reports that a computer used by Mr McCann had been seized by Portuguese police, saying officers would find nothing of interest on it.

The computer in question had largely sat unused, "gathering dust", in the corner of the family apartment in the Algarve village of Praia da Luz after being loaned to them by a local computer shop.

When the couple returned to the UK from Portugal, it was left behind.

Mr Mitchell said: "We were offered a PC and it proved useless. If that is the computer they are talking about then the police are welcome to it. They will be bored rigid.

"There is nothing incriminating on it because there is nothing incriminating to find."

A family source confirmed that Mr McCann's private laptop, which he had with him in Portugal, had not been taken in by police and is still at the family home in Rothley, Leicestershire.

MCCANNS DECEIVED ME

THE tormented priest who opened his church to Madeleine McCann’s parents after she vanished declared last night: “I was deceived.”

Father Jose Pacheco, who took confession from the devout couple, said he made a mistake forming such a close friendship with the McCanns.

He gave them the keys to his church so they could pray round the clock for their daughter’s safe return. But the move backfired when Kate and Gerry, both 39, were suddenly named official suspects by police.

Shocked Father Jose, 46, has told pals he now regrets the move – which earned him a telling-off from his bishop.

He said he just could not resist offering all the help he could to two “lost souls”. But he was also shocked to discover later that such a religious couple had undergone IVF treatment to have their children, he told friends.

This is viewed by many Catholics in Portugal as against the will of God. The McCanns suddenly stopped seeing Father Jose and fled Portugal without saying goodbye – leaving the keys with another clergyman.

Detectives quizzed the priest in a bid to find out if Kate had confessed to him. But he insisted to his closest friends that he would “rather rip out his tongue” than reveal the confessional secrets.

Police spent an hour last week examining a cemetery outside Father Jose’s tiny hillside church in Praia da Luz from which Maddie vanished in May, two days before her fourth birthday. They are considering digging for the little girl’s body there.

The priest admitted last night that he had got too close to the McCanns and that his dealings with them had left him “confused’’. Anguish Father Jose said: “I was deceived. I was just doing my job supporting lost souls. “I would do that again with any family who were in their situation. I didn’t do anything wrong.’’

The priest met Kate and Gerry the day after Madeleine vanished from their holiday apartment. He was deeply impressed by their religious devotion and extreme anguish.

The couple attended daily masses at his Our Lady Of Light church. He held special services for Madeleine – including one in which he unravelled a giant bowl of wool for the congregation to grasp to show they were united behind the McCanns.

After being given the keys to the church, Gerry went there in the early hours to pray, according to relatives. But as the finger of suspicion fell upon the McCanns they suddenly stopped seeing the priest.

In his sermon the day after the couple left Portugal he did not mention Madeleine by name and simply asked the congregation to pray for help to get over their “recent troubles’’. Father Jose – who runs two churches and teaches at three local schools – was not seen for several days. He re-emerged after being quizzed by detectives desperate to know if Kate had confessed to him.

One of his friends said: “He was very impressed by the McCanns’ religious conviction and genuinely moved by their inconsolable grief. “He wanted to do everything he could to help them, and it seemed natural to offer them the keys to the church.

“They were under intense media pressure at the time and he wanted to give them the opportunity to express their grief and offer their prayers in private. “It was not normal practice to hand out the keys and did not go down well with his superiors.

“In hindsight he recognises he perhaps got a little too close to the couple and it may have clouded his judgment. “He was also surprised how suddenly his relationship with the McCanns’ ended. “But he says he’ll continue to pray for them.’’ Police have accused Kate of accidentally killing her daughter with sedatives.

The McCanns strongly deny the allegations against them and insist Madeleine was abducted.

Maddy visited me in my sleep
Shattered Kate's 'vision'

Tormented Kate McCann claimed she was "visited" by her missing daughter, it was revealed last night.

Kate told her mother Susan Healy how little Madeleine came to her this week as she lay in bed.

Mrs Healy, 61, said: "She told me she was unable to sleep a couple of nights ago.

"I said, 'Did the twins wake you up?' Sometimes they get up and go into her bed. But she said, 'No, Madeleine came'."

Mrs Healy said her daughter, also mum to two-year-olds Sean and Amelie, was fighting to cope with Madeleine's disappearance.

She told ITV news: "Sometimes she will have periods where she's absolutely devastated, hysterical and bereft.

"This lasts only for a short period of time but it happens once or twice a day."

The day Madeleine vanished her dad Gerry asked a friend to check on Kate as she was alone with the children while he played tennis, sources said yesterday.

Pal David Payne was asked to "stick his head round the door to make sure Kate, 39, and the kids were all right".

Portuguese police are now suspicious the request may show Gerry thought Kate's mind was fragile.

They suspect she may have killed four-year-old Madeleine accidentally and her husband helped her cover it up.

It is a claim the couple, both doctors, strongly deny.

The source said: "David Payne saw Madeleine at around 6.30pm.

"He popped in because Gerry wanted to make sure Kate was OK. I expect it was said like, 'If you are heading back that way, see if Kate is all right'."

Gerry, 39, was in the middle of a 6pm tennis lesson at the Mark Warner Ocean Club in Praia da Luz on May 3 when Mr Payne, holidaying with them and other friends, walked past.

Mr Payne, 41, popped in and later told police all was well.

He was the last person outside the family to see Madeleine alive before she vanished.

Yesterday he said: "Kate is a fantastic mum. She can cope. She is a very able person."

Mr Payne, who has known the couple for at least five years, added: "I have never witnessed anything untoward."

Last night a friend said: "Gerry simply asked him to put his head round the door.

"He had no concerns about Kate coping.

"To suggest this casual remark implies he was worrying about Kate's ability to cope is absolute rot."
