MADDY: POLICE DRAFT IN LIP READERS
POLICE in Portugal tried to film Kate and Gerry McCann secretly in a bid to trap them.
But they bungled the recording, it was claimed yesterday.
A source close to the investigation said that when officers checked the tape they found the sound had been accidentally switched off.
They were forced to call in lip readers to try to discover what the McCanns were saying during unguarded moments at Portimao police headquarters.
The astonishing claim comes amid mounting concern over the Portuguese police handling of the investigation.
It is alleged officers were hoping to use the secretly-filmed material to strengthen their suspicion that the McCanns were involved in their daughter’s disappearance. The source said: “The cameras were set up in the interview suite at Portimao during the two days the McCanns were interrogated and made suspects.
“But when detectives went to examine the tapes afterwards, they realised that they hadn’t picked up any sound.
“It then got really farcical because they made an approach to lip readers to try to get the words to go with the visuals on the tape.”
Portuguese justice system experts said yesterday that the use of hidden cameras, which has not been confirmed by Portimao police, would not be surprising.
Kate and Gerry were convinced they were being bugged by police during their stay in Portugal following Madeleine’s disappearance. The case has provoked a huge row over the use and extent of telephone bugs in Portugal.
