Right to choose? British director tackles the debate that divides US

Controversial and explicit documentary explores the moral and social conflict over terminations

A British film-maker is stirring renewed controversy over America's attitude towards abortion, with a documentary that contains shocking and explicit footage of an advanced stage termination.

Tony Kaye, who made his name as a award-winning director of commercial and music videos, has spent 16 years and devoted $7m (£3.4m) of his own money to produce what he hopes will be the definitive documentary on the American abortion debate. The film, which has opened in New York and is set for release across 23 US cities, has divided critics, with some hailing it as the documentary of the year, others denouncing it as sensationalist. Detractors have also pointed out that most of the talking heads who appear on camera are male, including Noam Chomsky and the lawyer Alan Dershowitz.

Kaye began shooting Lake of Fire in 1992 as a way, he says, of exploring his own deep moral uncertainties about abortion. His personal opinions, he told the Guardian, are as polarised as those of the American public. "If I had to tick a box I would say I was pro-choice. I would vote for a woman's right to chose without hesitation, because without legal abortions poor women die." But emotionally, he says, he is "completely opposed to abortion. I see it as murder - the taking of another's life."

The result of his own internal conflict is a documentary that is, in the conclusion of Cineaste magazine, "a maddeningly elusive film". Shot in arty black and white, it has sequences that will dismay pro-choice feminists and pro-life fundamentalists in equal measure.

The most shocking section of the 152-minute film is footage shot by Kaye himself of the abortion of a 20-week foetus. It shows the foetus's head and eye staring straight at the camera, its hand in a metal collecting tray and its foot placed on a ruler and measuring just over 3cm.

The foetal parts are checked by a doctor to ensure the operation has been completed while he explains why he has conducted the operation: "The really important thing is that we have been able to help this young lady to get on with her life by facilitating her decision not to be a mother at this time."

Kaye told the Guardian that he wholly agreed with those sentiments. "But the irony of that moment is that you are seeing a snuff movie - they have chopped up a human being, a baby."

The footage, which Kaye describes as "probably the most controversial shot ever shown in cinemas", has raised accusations that the documentary is slanted against abortion. But other graphic images, including a picture of a woman slumped in the corner of a hotel room where she had died trying to abort her own foetus with a coat hanger, will prove no less shocking to pro-life supporters.

Lake of Fire

The title, Lake of Fire, is a reference to the hell to which religious fundamentalists featured in the film believe anyone involved in abortion will be condemned. The film includes extraordinary historic shots of the violence committed by anti-abortion extremists in the 1990s. Kaye interviews on film Bayard Britton, an abortion doctor in Florida who explains that he comes to work wearing a bullet proof vest. "If I didn't do this job it probably wouldn't get done. So I do it."

Kaye also talks to Paul Hill, an anti-abortion activist who tells the film-maker that "whatever force is justified in defending the life of a born child is also justified in defending the life of an unborn child."

In 1994 Hill, a former Presbyterian minister, put his words into action: he shot and killed Dr Britton and his colleague James Barrett. Hill was later executed for the murders.

The film also hears from a nurse, Emily Lyons, three weeks after she was caught in a bomb blast in 1998 at her clinic in Birmingham, Alabama, in which a police officer died. Her face is covered in shrapnel wounds, she is blinded in one eye and is in a wheelchair. She says that what angers her most are the letters she received after the attack telling her to burn in a lake of fire. "If only they knew that I've already been in that lake of fire, and I'm not ready to go back."

Kaye, 55, is no stranger to controversies. Brought up in the Jewish community of Stamford Hill in north London, he became a highly in-demand director of edgy commercials in the 1980s. His one big venture into Hollywood, a feature film about a gang of Californian neo-Nazis, American History X, earned his lead actor Edward Norton a 1998 Oscar nomination for best actor. But it ended in acrimony when Norton and the film's producer tried to make changes to his final cut. Kaye spent $100,000 on full-page adverts in the Hollywood trade press denouncing them both, blotting his reputation with the studios.

Lake of Fire marks his potential return to the fold, as does a feature film that he has currently in production called Black Water Transit. But the abortion documentary is more than a career move; it is a personal exploration.

Personal touch

His almost obsessive interest in the subject began when he was living in London and when his then partner had a termination, he told the Guardian. "She wanted to have the abortion. I wanted to have the child. I respected her wish and I went through with it with her. But it left a mark and I have been very curious since then."

Abortion is one of the clear demarcartion lines in the US 2008 presidential election campaigns, with all Democratic candidates supporting the right to choose, and all Republican candidates supporting the right to life, with the notable exception of Rudy Giuliani who says he hates abortion but believes a woman should be left to decide - a position not dissimilar to Kaye's.

Abortion clinics still face intense lobbying against them by pro-life groups, such as the 40 Days for Life campaign that is now being organised across many states. Although the 1990s campaign of violence against abortion practitioners has ceased, medics still take measures to protect themselves and there is now a federally imposed cordon zone around all clinics. "There has been less violence in the past few years, but that's because the anti-abortion groups are winning," he says.

The last 30 minutes of Lake of Fire follow a woman called Stacey, a former victim of domestic violence, as she goes through her fifth abortion. It shows the intense emotional impact of the procedure. "It's just been a really tiring day," Stacey says after it is all over. "I know I made the right decision. But it's not easy."

Half-a-million radio listeners turned off by Moyles and Wogan

More than half-a-million listeners have deserted BBC breakfast rivals Chris Moyles and Terry Wogan over the past three months, according to the latest audience research figures published yesterday.

Moyles, the self-styled saviour of Radio 1, has 6.98 million listeners. That is down 280,000 from the 7.26 million at the end of the previous quarter (April to June).

Wogan presents the country's most popular breakfast show with 7.68 million listeners, but he is down 240,000. However, both DJs are attracting more listeners than they were at the same point last year - Moyles by 170,000 and Wogan by 30,000, and the dip is reflected nationally across radio listening as a whole.

EastEnders - Now Ricky Is Back

Following hot on the heels of the news that Patsy Palmer is returning to EastEnders, the BBC today announced that Sid Owen is to return to the BBC One soap to reprise his role as Ricky Butcher.

Yesterday the BBC confirmed his former co-star, Pasty Palmer, would also return to the show in her role as Bianca Jackson.

The pair endured a stormy relationship which eventually ended, and viewers will see Ricky return to Albert Square with his new fiancée.

"I'm over the moon they've asked me to come back," Owen said.

"It will be interesting to see what has been happening to Ricky and Bianca over the last few years," he added.

"Although, I must admit I'm not looking forward to her nagging me by shouting his name," he said.

Diederick Santer, EastEnders' executive producer said of the signing: "Ricky and Bianca were a hugely popular and well-loved partnership on the show.

"They are both now living their own lives, and there's been a good deal of water under the bridge. But could the old spark reignite?"

National Television Awards

Ant and Dec triumphed at the National Television Awards tonight, despite their shows getting caught up in the phone rip-off scandal.

Their show, Saturday Night Takeaway, beat the likes of Deal Or No Deal, Friday Night With Jonathan Ross and An Audience With Take That Live. The former Byker Grove duo were also named Most Popular Entertainment Presenter, beating Graham Norton, Paul O'Grady and Jonathon Ross.

Ant and Dec's reality show I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! won Most Popular Reality Programme, beating Big Brother and The Apprentice.

All the awards, presented at the ceremony in the Royal Albert Hall hosted by Sir Trevor McDonald, are voted for by the public.

The BBC picked up the majority of the awards, six compared to ITV's four, while Channel 4 walked away empty-handed.

Sci-Fi drama Doctor Who won two awards including Most Popular Drama, which saw it beat rivals Life On Mars and Shameless. Its star, David Tennant, was named Most Popular Actor, ahead of soap stars like Charlie Clements (Bradley Branning) in EastEnders and Antony Cotton (Sean Tully) in Coronation Street.

EastEnders won two awards, beating its rival Coronation Street to the best soap and also winning Most Popular Actress for Lacey Turner (Stacey Slater), who won over Freema Agyeman (Martha Jones) in Doctor Who.

Former Hear'Say star Kym Ryder was named Most Popular Newcomer for her role as barmaid Michelle Connor in Coronation Street.

Top Gear won the Factual title for James May, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond, beating Gordon Ramsay's F-Word.

Funeral Channel Launched

A German businessman plans to launch the country's first television channel dedicated to funerals and mourning, complete with death announcements and documentaries about cemeteries.

The channel, to be called Etos TV, is meant to inform people about funeral practices and act as a counter to a growing trend in Germany to be buried anonymously, said Kerstin Gernig from the German undertakers' association.

"Every person has left his mark, raised children, paid taxes, done something. We would like them to be shown respect. This channel will inform people in a discreet, serious way how to bury their loved ones.

"We hope that this will become the 'Arte' of the funeral culture," she added, referring to the Franco-German arts and culture channel.

The channel is the brainchild of entrepreneur Wolf Tilmann Schneider who said he would like it to be on air by Christmas but still needs to secure more funding.

It will offer a death announcement service where for a fee, a photograph of the deceased will be shown, accompanied either by background music or the reading of a message in his memory.

For a higher fee, it will screen a short film about the departed friend of family member, Schneider said.

Cultural commentator Peter Wippermann said the channel could help to break latter day taboos surrounding death.

"In the past, the family would accompany a dying person to the end. But in our society death is no longer something we like to talk about.

"So I think that though this is obviously a commercial venture, it could also satisfy a social need."

Christmas Classics On ITV

Kate Thornton is to host a two-part ITV1 seasonal entertainment show featuring a celebrity choir singing viewers' favourite Christmas classics.

The first 30-minute programme will see Thornton announce ten songs and inviting viewers to vote for their top tune.

In the main hour-long programme, vocal coaches David and Carrie Grant will lead the 20-strong celebrity choir in performing the 10 festive songs, backed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The winning song will be revealed at the end of the programme.

The contest will be broadcast on big screens around the country with members of the public being invited to sing along.

Profits from telephone calls will go to the Prince's Trust.

Prison Break Actor Gets Jail

Former Prison Break actor Lane Garrison has been sentenced to three years and four months in prison in the US for a drunken driving crash that killed a teenager last December.

The 27-year-old actor, who played rookie David 'Tweener' Apolskis in the TV series, could have faced nearly seven years in prison.

Garrison was driving a 2001 Land Rover on December 2 when he lost control and rammed a tree. The crash killed his passenger Vahagn Setian, a Beverly Hills High School student. Two 15-year-old girls in the car survived.

Garrison had no reaction to the sentencing and was taken away in handcuffs to immediately begin serving the time.

Before the ruling, he apologised to the victim's family.

"I'm sick of my own behaviour that night," he said. "This remorse is genuine. I feel it every day."

60 SECONDS: Chris Bisson
Actor Chris Bisson is best known for his roles as secretly gay shop-owner Kash in Channel 4's chav drama Shameless and for his turn as taxi driver Vikram in Coronation Street, as well as Saleem in East Is East. Bisson's also appeared in the second series of I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here. The first four series of Shameless are available on DVD now.

Doesn’t Shameless just laugh at chavs?
I’ve only had people telling me how much they enjoy the series and that
they know someone just like Frank Gallagher. A lot of the people who tell me they like it are ‘chavs’ – they love it. It’s only posh people who say: ‘It’s not terribly politically correct.’ They don’t have to watch it.

Why did you leave the series?
It’s such a big ensemble cast. By the second year, I’d only done about three weeks’ work but I was contracted for six months. I told the producers that I loved the show but didn’t want to sit on my arse doing nothing for months. Rather than write me out, they changed the character so he could pop into a few episodes a series. I’m not in the current series but hopefully I’ll be back for the next one.

You work in a shop on the programme. Have you ever had any real-life retail experience?
I worked in my uncle’s paper shop in Moss Side on Saturdays when I was a teenager. I was out of work after I’d done East Is East on stage – it was all going great but as soon as we came off, no one gave a toss. I was skint and ended up working in Moss Bros in Covent Garden, fitting people for dinner suits. They were off to their fancy parties while I was weighing potatoes in a supermarket to see which ones I could afford.

What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
I was temping for a while and ended up at the Crown Prosecution Service. I had to photocopy photographs for juries. The pictures were sequential so I’d try to work out what the story was. It’d start with a picture of a house, then you’d get a picture of a corridor littered with mattresses or random bits of hockey sticks and think: ‘This is a bit weird’ and then they’d get in and there’d be close-ups of the bodies. Some had maggots on them. No one gave me any warning about what the job was and I only lasted two days. It was minging.

Do people still recognise you from Coronation Street?
Yes, there are certain shows that people will always remember you from and Shameless and Corrie have stuck. At first, you think it’ll go away but people remember you for whatever reason – either good or bad.

They asked what types of women I liked. They hadn’t cast the ‘young totty’ and asked me to do a wish-list

When you left Coronation Street, were you worried you’d never work again?
With Corrie, people often leave and they don’t get any other work. It’s also one of those jobs you get frustrated with because you can be really busy and then, suddenly, you won’t have anything to do for two months. It would have been more scary if Corrie had been my first job but I’d been through being broke and working in Moss Bros, so I’d been through hard times before.

You seemed to blend into the background on I’m A Celebrity. Do you like to keep a low profile?
No I didn’t keep a low profile but ITV cut it how they wanted – it’s an entertainment show. The fact that I wouldn’t shag Catalina meant they weren’t interested in putting me on screen. It’s one of those things, though: it’s a job and you’re aware they might cut you like that.

Was it that blatant? That you were expected to shag Catalina?

Basically yes. Before I went in, they asked if I preferred blondes or brunettes. They asked me about the types of women I liked. They’d cast me but hadn’t cast the ‘young totty’ role and asked me to do a wish-list of all the birds I fancied. That’s not very discreet, is it?

Who are you still friends with from the show?

I still sometimes see Phil Tuffnell and Daniella Westbrook.

Would you do another reality show?

Probably not unless I needed the cash. It all depends on circumstances. I did it because I wasn't getting castings, people are used to actors not being on Coronation Street for ages because their characters aren't being used so I wanted to announce I'd left the show. Raising money for a Manchester children's hospital was also a good thing to do.

What are you up to at the moment?
I’ve done an episode for a new ITV drama about surfers called Echo Beach. And I’m running Centini, a production company, with my stepdad. When I was at uni, I worked in the Granada newsroom doing light stories and I got into acting after that. We’re doing regional tourism programmes and something about canals for Discovery.

What was the last thing you bought on eBay?
A charger for my phone. I'm sick of paying £15 for them in the shops when you can get one for a pound on eBay.

Lawyer: Chapman's son sold N-word audio to tabloid

* Bounty hunter "Dog" Chapman apologizes for racial slur

HONOLULU — Television bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman's son taped a private phone conversation in which the reality star used a racial slur repeatedly, then sold it to a tabloid for "a lot of money," Chapman's lawyer said Thursday.

"I guess because of whatever level of anger he had of his father, he felt the need to express it in that manner," attorney Brook Hart told The Associated Press.

Tucker Chapman could not be reached for comment; no one answered the telephone at a Honolulu number listed under his name.

The National Enquirer on Wednesday posted on its Web site a clip of a conversation in which Duane Chapman, star of the hit A&E series "Dog the Bounty Hunter," repeatedly used the N-word in reference to Tucker's
Calling Names

Chapman later apologized to his son and the woman, then learned about how the tape got into the tabloid's hands, Hart said.

A&E has suspended production of the series, saying the network takes the matter seriously.

"When the inquiry is concluded, we will take appropriate action," A&E spokesman Michael Feeney said in a statement Thursday.

The show, in its fifth season and one of A&E's top-rated programs, has not been canceled.

An after-hours telephone message for David Perel, the Enquirer's editor in chief, was not immediately returned. But earlier in the day, Perel declined to say how the tape was obtained, saying what mattered was what's on the tape.

In the conversation, Chapman urges Tucker to break up with his girlfriend. He also expresses concern about the girlfriend trying to tape and go public about the TV star's use of the N-word.

Chapman has said he was "disappointed in his choice of a friend, not due to her race, but her character. However, I should have never used that term." He also said he was ashamed of himself and pledged to make amends.

Hart said his client is not a racist and vowed never to use the word again.

"I have never seen anything that suggests he judges people by the color of their skin or racial background or anything but on their character," he said. "Duane lost his composure and made very, very inappropriate remarks, for which he truly regrets." The TV series follows Chapman and his tattooed crew as they track down bail jumpers in Hawaii and other states. The show also stars some members of Chapman's family, but Tucker Chapman is not regularly featured.

The Honolulu-based bounty hunter first grabbed headlines for apprehending serial rapist and Max Factor heir Andrew Luster in Mexico in 2003.

* Watch video that includes excerpts of the "Dog" Chapman phone call to his son, in which he uses a racial slur six times.

60 SECONDS: Joan Jett

Joan Jett started her career in the first all-girl rock group The Runaways and wrote their big hit Cherry Bomb. As a solo artist, she scored a global hit with I Love Rock 'n' Roll, before setting up her own Blackheart label. She has been linked with actress Carmen Electra by the tabloids. Jett starts a British tour on Sunday with Motörhead and Alice Cooper. http://www.livenation.co.uk

You’re doing gigs with Alice Cooper and Motörhead. Are you pals with them?
Yeah, I played with them both in the 1980s. Opening for Motörhead was the very first tour I did, back when I was in The Runaways. They helped me out and lent me equipment for when I did a solo tour. It’ll be good to come back to Britain – I haven’t played there for a long time.

Why have you had more success in America than Britain?
It boils down to label support. We've tried to go our own way with our own label, Blackheart, which is distributed by other labels in the US but I guess it's a different situation in the UK. We'll have the record out when we get there for the tour which is exciting.

What did you think of the stories alleging that you were having a lesbian fling with Carmen Electra?

I understand why they started because it’s a titillating idea but it was all sparked off because she appeared in the video for my cover of The Sweet’s song AC/DC. Obviously, people are going to jump on that. Carmen’s a really wonderful person so I don’t mind people making jokes or speculating about that.

Suzi Quatro says you ripped her act off. What do you make of that?

Then I suppose The Stones ripped off Chuck Berry and so on and so forth. She inspired me. I was a big fan of Suzi when I was 14. I went and stood in a hotel lobby to try to get an autograph. I was petrified. She came down, looked at me, made a face and walked on by. I remembered that for the rest of my life. I thought: ‘If I become famous, I’ll never do that to a fan.’ If I notice someone in a lobby looking shy but it is obvious that they want to talk, I’ll ask if they want a picture. Maybe Suzi’s just bitter. She should be happy she inspired someone. I added to what she did. I wrote my songs. When she had her success, she was completely contrived.

What were the highlights of life in The Runaways?
The whole three-and-a-half years were great. It was such an actionpacked time. Every day, something crazy happened. We knew we could only be The Runaways for so long, while we were all still teenagers. I enjoyed it all but I know some of the other girls found it stressful.

After a gig in Glasgow, there was a riot. The fire brigade had to turn the hoses on the kids who’d come to see us

When did you realise you’d become successful?

It was after a gig in Glasgow. There was a riot and we were on the balcony of the hotel or something, I’m not sure of the details but the fire brigade had to turn the hoses on the kids who’d come to see us. We’d never seen anything like it. When we went to Japan, we got off the plane and there were thousands of screaming girls waiting for us. It was quite insane. People chased us down the street and gave us hairbrushes so we’d brush our hair and they’d get a few strands – they were too polite to just yank it out. It was unexpected but it’s what I got into this business for. I wanted to excite people to the degree they lost themselves.

Do you have any songs you really hate?

There are a lot of those. I don't listen to the radio very much, I find it depressing. They don't play anything good. When I was growing up in the 70s you had some great rock songs played with good pop stuff, now it all seems like a big generic mess and it could be anybody. You get a gem once in a while here and there but that's it. It's inane pop girl stuff whether it's Britney or Avril Lavigne or whoever...I can't even tell you who I'm not listening to, haha. Even the rock stuff isn't that great. I listen to a punk station on satellite radio or my iPod.

Who do you want to win the US election?

Anyone but a Republican. A few years ago, I worked for a guy called Howard Dean who was running for election. But the US media made him look like a fool. He yelled during a speech and they just played him yelling over and over until people thought he was insane. It’s quite disheartening to see how the system really works but I’ll be doing everything I can to make sure something changes direction. A lot of us in the US don’t like what’s going on.

What’s your favourite film?

Cabaret made a huge impact on me. Decadent 1930s Berlin really grabbed me – it looked dirty and sexual and had that flamboyant showbiz element. It blew my 12-year-old mind. It spurred me into showbusiness.

Are you excited by the Spice Girls reunion?

I was amazed to read they sold out in 38 seconds. I don’t know if that’s true. I guess it’s good for them, right? I won’t be trying to get a ticket. I suppose they’re a good example if you want to sing pop but I’d advise people to go out and buy a cheap guitar and a how-to-play book and figure it out themselves. That’s what worked for me. Find some likeminded friends and you’re off.

US TV show pulled after race row

At least two advertisers have ended their support for Chapman's show
A bounty hunter has had his show pulled from US TV schedules after he used a racist term repeatedly in a phone call.

The A&E network said Dog the Bounty Hunter, starring Duane "Dog" Chapman, would be off-air "for the foreseeable future", but had not been scrapped.

The National Enquirer released a recording of a conversation involving the star, repeatedly making derogatory remarks about his son's girlfriend.

He issued an apology but several civil rights leaders want his show ditched.

They have written to A&E, branding his comments "a vicious attack on... interracial relations, as well as an incitement to violence".

Tucker's programme sees him and colleagues trying to find people who have absconded in Hawaii and other US states.

'Ashamed'

In the phone call, Chapman was heard talking to his son Tucker, urging him to break up with his black girlfriend.

He used the offensive "N-word" six times in the first 45 seconds of the five-minute clip, the Associated Press reported.

In his apology, Chapman said he was ashamed of himself and "should never have used that term".

And he added he was "disappointed" in his son's choice of girlfriend "not due to her race, but her character".

The 54-year-old's lawyer, Brook Hart, said Tucker was not a racist and promised the word would never be used again by the star.

Gay Award For Channel 4 Soap

Channel 4's Hollyoaks has been named Broadcast of the Year at the second Stonewall Awards.

The ceremony was held in London's Victoria and Albert Museum.

The soap was chosen for "its sympathetic and convincing handling of the gritty and emotional storyline about the developing relationship between teenagers John Paul and Craig".

The winners in a number of categories were chosen by a panel of judges including Clare Balding, Matt Lucas, Nicky Campbell and Paul Gambaccini.

Australian TV Presenter Found Dead

A high profile Australian television news presenter has been found dead in Sydney. Police say there were no suspicious circumstances.

Channel Ten newsreader Charmaine Dragun was unhappy living in Sydney and sent a text message to her boyfriend just minutes before she took her own life.

The body of the 29-year-old, originally from Perth, was found by police at The Gap, in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, on Friday afternoon.

Her boyfriend of eight years Simon Struthers, a forensic pathologist and a member of an indie punk band, was being comforted by family members yesterday.

The contents of the message have not been disclosed.

It is understood Ms Dragun had been troubled in recent times, feeling desperately isolated from her family and friends in Perth and confiding in at least one colleague at Ten about her unhappiness.

A former colleague and friend in Perth said Ms Dragun had spoken about problems she was having in Sydney.

"She had issues. I'm not sure whether they were relationship problems, work problems or both,'' he said.

"She sounded chirpy when we spoke a couple of weeks ago, but she was talking about coming back to Perth, about coming back one day.''

Ms Dragun was a co-anchor anchor for Channel Ten's Perth news bulletin, recorded in Ten's Sydney studios.

In an interview in May last year Ms Dragun indicated the move to Sydney had been difficult and shiftwork had made her lifestyle "topsy-turvy''.

Neighbours - End Of The Line For Harold

Harold Bishop is finally hanging up his apron after twenty years in Neighbours.

Actor Ian Smith has announced he is retiring from full time work.

Smith first appeared in Neighbours in 1987 and played Harold until the character went missing, presumed drowned, in 1991. He returned to the role in 1996 when it was revealed that Harold had lost his memory but was alive and well.

While Smith will record his last scenes later this month, he has agreed to a number of special guest appearances next year.

The news of Smith's departure has saddened his co-stars, with one of the production team describing the actor as "the heart and soul'' of the programme.

"Ian really set the tone of the show, both on the set and behind the scenes,'' he said.

"As well as being a consummate professional, he's all about creating a positive vibe that brings the cast together.''

He will be very missed, but at least he'll be back to say hi next year.''

Smith is not just signing-off from playing coffee shop owner Bishop, his 30 year career in showbiz also includes roles in long-running Australian TV serials Bellbird and Prisoner Cell Block H.

Hollywood Writers To Strike

Hollywood's screen writers' union has announced an indefinite strike starting Monday - a move which is expected to see popular shows taken off air in the US film and television industry's biggest crisis in decades.

The 12,000 members of the Writers Guild of America will strike from Monday morning unless a deal is struck with producers over demands on pay and profit-sharing, the union said after its leaders met yesterday.

Writers are demanding a greater share of residual profits from television series sold on DVDs as well as improved pay schedules for programs shown on the Internet, cellular phones, and other new media outlets.

"Everybody knows what a DVD costs and a writer gets four to five cents for a DVD sale," screenwriter Bryce Zabel said Thursday. "We've asked for eight. And they've said that's outrageous."

Industry analysts are predicting a lengthy shutdown lasting several months, with one estimate of potential losses set at more than one billion dollars.

Entertainment industry bible Daily Variety greeted news of the expected shutdown on its front page yesterday with the headline: "Apocalypse Now."

The report also speculated that a strike may trigger off a chain reaction amongst other industry unions.

The effects of a strike will be felt most severely by television, with late-night chat shows hosted by David Letterman and Jay Leno -- which both lean heavily on teams of union writers -- expected to go off the air.

Kylie cancels world tour

Kylie has been told to calm it down because of health fears

Kylie Minogue has cancelled her world tour over health fears.

The singer, who recently won her fight with breast cancer, was told by doctors it could hamper her recovery.

She told a newspaper: 'The tour is not going to happen, it is too far too soon. I can't do it next year. It kind of breaks my heart because that is what I'm in this business for.'

The 39-year-old added: 'Not being able to go ahead with my plans is a real downer. Every woman has to face up to new priorities, near the top is health.

'I take my health very seriously but not obsessively.

'Everything is about pacing yourself.'

Minogue was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, and had to cancel part of her Showgirl tour, before resuming it at the end of last year.

Her comeback single, 2 Hearts, is available on download from today.

News Flash: Kylie denies health rumours – read official statement here!

heatworld has just been sent the following press statement from teeny-tiny Kylie Minogue, claiming she isn’t cancelling her tour due to health reasons for one very simple reason: there was never a tour booked in the first place. Read her full statement below...

We would like to make it clear that the report in today’s ‘Daily Mail’ that Kylie has cancelled a forthcoming tour on doctor’s orders is completely false.

When asked, Kylie has said on numerous occasions that she loves touring and that she might tour again in the near future. There were and are no dates currently confirmed. If and when dates are confirmed they will be announced in the normal manner.

Thus, reports in the ‘Daily Mail’ that Kylie has cancelled a tour are not true for the simple reason that no tour had been booked.

Kylie has not been told by her doctors that touring “could seriously harm her health”. She did not give the quotes reported in the Mail today. And touring is something that she is still considering for the future. Her health remains excellent and she is in the middle of promoting her new single and album.

Her representatives have asked the Mail to print a prominent apology for today’s highly damaging story.

Site designer New Visions Mobile believes it is a more mobile and flexible model than social network sites like MySpace and Facebook.

"Kylie's blog will regularly be updated, offering exclusive music, news, tour information and more, with fans able to download exclusive behind the scenes footage and have a chance to win 'money can't buy' prizes."

Julia McNally, the director of New Visions Mobile, said: "We've developed 'OurTribe' which is a user generated content application integrated into our existing wap platform.

"Whilst other social networking sites allow fans to create their own profiles online, side loading images and video from their phones to the PC, OurTribe allows users to create and manage their pages directly from their mobile handset.

"It's extremely exciting for us to launch this with such a big name artist as Kylie."

Minogue's own profile is automatically added as a friend to anyone who joins the network.
KylieKonnect.com allows fans to register both online and on their mobile phones.
