Maddy police to quiz Murat again

Madeleine McCann suspect Robert Murat is to be grilled again by police.

Officers want to clear up inconsistencies linked to his interviews after he was arrested in May.

A police source said: "He has not been ruled out."

The 33-year-old expat insisted yesterday he was "absolutely not worried" about being quizzed again over the disappearance of Madeleine.

The Brit's fresh interrogation emerged as Portuguese police admitted for the first time that all DNA evidence in the case was contaminated and a former nanny told how she caught a man hiding outside Madeleine's holiday flat.

Murat's friend Tuck Price said: "It would be great if he was re-interviewed because he wants this cleared up. It can't happen soon enough.

"He hasn't heard anything, there's been no contact from police for months. But he's absolutely not worried."

The 33-year-old expat was first arrested as a suspect 11 days after Madeleine, four, vanished from the flat in Praia da Luz on May 3.

New chief investigator Paulo Rebelo, who thinks Madeleine was abducted, is believed to have discovered inconsistencies linked to Murat's original interviews.

He ordered a fresh grilling as part of a complete review of the Madeleine probe.

A police source said: "Murat hasn't been ruled out.

"Rebelo isn't satisfied with evidence gathering at the start of the investigation. Obviously, much of that was focused on Murat."

Divorced dad Murat lives with his mum close to where Madeleine vanished.

He denies involvement. His lawyer Francisco Pagarete said: "He's happy to co-operate with any further questions police may have."

A Portuguese police forensic lab source yesterday blasted detectives for failing to properly secure the McCanns' flat on May 3. Disclosing that as a result DNA evidence was contaminated, he said: "It's mess.

"When lab specialists arrived at the crime scene, most of the evidence had disappeared. Results which have arrived do not allow us to accuse anybody."

It is the first time any officer has admitted police blunders during the first "golden hour" of the probe.

The source revealed Portuguese police never properly seal crime scenes because they have no specialists.

It means forensic evidence is always contaminated.

A former nanny at the Ocean Club, where the McCanns stayed, found a man hiding there a year before Madeleine went missing.

She claimed the stranger was outside Room 5a, the flat used by the McCanns.

He fled. The nanny's description of him appears to match that of a man seen hurrying from the McCann flat on May 3.

Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry are also formal suspects.

'WE’VE FOUND A KIDNAPPED BLONDE GIRL'

THE parents of Madeleine McCann were given new hope last night after another kidnapped girl was found safe in the mountains of Morocco.

Private investigators searching for Madeleine found a blonde girl who had allegedly been kidnapped by a North African family.

Sources in the Barcelona detective agency Metodo 3, hired by Kate and Gerry McCann to organise the hunt for Madeleine, said Interpol is now investigating the discovery.

Now Madeleine police turn to disgraced detective for help

Police are so far from solving the disappearance of Madeleine McCann that they have been forced to turn to the discredited detective sacked from the case.

Sources close to the inquiry said today the police "need a miracle" and are now re-evaluating all the original evidence gathered in the immediate aftermath of the four-year-old's disappearance almost six months ago.

Sick Madeleine 'advertising' spoof in German magazine is 'extremely hurtful'

A German satirical magazine's take on the publicity surrounding Madeleine McCann's disappearance was described by her parents' spokesman today as "extremely hurtful".

The Titanic published a double-page spread in the form of an advert for a supermarket, depicting a number of products promoted with the image and name of the little girl.

One is for a domestic cleaner guaranteed to remove "all traces at home and against which DNA tests have no chance".

Gerry McCann returns to work

Gerry McCann returned to work as a cardiologist today, saying he had done everything he could to ensure the search for missing daughter Madeleine goes on.

Mr McCann has been on unpaid leave from Glenfield Hospital, Leicester, since Madeleine disappeared from their Portuguese holiday apartment six months ago.

He will be eased back into work, however, working just three half days a week to begin with and specialising in MRI scanning. This will involve “limited contact” with patients, mainly discussing the results of MRI scans.

He plans to return to full clinical care of patients in the New Year.

Today Mr McCann said: "Unless Madeleine is found, we are not expecting any significant developments in the near future.

"I'm very keen to get back in."

Earlier he said: "We have always said that at six months we didn't want to look back and say I wish we had done that and wish we had done this.

"But now we feel we have done everything we can do to establish the search for Madeleine on an ongoing basis and we feel we have the proper infrastructure now in place to find her.

"That in turn allows me to concentrate on returning to work properly.

"My colleagues here at Glenfield Hospital have been absolutely fantastic in their support for both Kate and I throughout this and I am very pleased to be rejoining them and to get back a degree of normality with a working routine."

Mr McCann, will split his time between his MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) work at Glenfield Hospital and British Heart Foundation research on the three-dimensional scans of patients with narrowed heart valves.

Doug Skehan, boss of the cardiology unit said: "In short, we're glad to have a good doctor back."

About Mr McCann's continuing status as official suspect, Mr Skehan said: "His status as an arguido is not the same status as if he was charged with an offence.

"We mustn't develop prejudices or disadvantages for someone. From a compassionate point of view, this is a colleague who has lost his child and still does not know where that child is.

"Adding to that woe by making harsh judgments or being directed by external influences would be wrong."

Exclusive: 'I saw Madeleine taken away in a taxi'
EXCLUSIVE Her face was bruised She had the eye mark Driven 180 miles

A woman yesterday told how she watched helplessly as a little girl with Madeleine McCann's distinctive eye mark was driven off in a taxi.

Naoul Malhi, 30, spotted a blonde girl with a bruised face being dragged along by a Moroccan woman. And when she looked in the child's eyes she saw a flecked iris identical to Madeleine's. Naoul said: "It was Madeleine. There's no mistaking that mark."

Before she could raise the alarm the woman bundled the child into a taxi and sped off.

The driver took the pair from the Moroccan mountain town of Fnidk to a port 180 miles away. The news came as Gerry McCann yesterday returned to work - and a private detective vowed to find Madeleine within five months.

She said: "I looked into the little girl's eyes and I was certain it was Madeleine. There was no mistaking that mark in her eye.

"Her blonde hair was cut shorter and she had a big bruise on her forehead and looked very unhappy. The woman was about 40 or 50, she was gripping the little girl tightly and didn't want to make eye contact with me.

"As soon as she realised I had looked closely into the girl's eyes she started dragging Madeleine away and flagged down a taxi."

Naoul tried to get into the taxi with the woman and child, as cab-sharing is a common practice in Morocco.

She said: "I rushed to try and get in. I wanted to stop her from taking the child away. But she pushed me away and yelled at the driver to leave straight away."

Luckily Naoul, who was in the town of Fnidk in Morocco's northern Rif mountain region on a trip to visit relatives, had the presence of mind to grab one of the driver's business cards before he could speed off. She said: "I was so convinced of what I had seen that I later called the taxi company."

They said the driver had taken the woman and child 180 miles through the mountains to the Mediterranean port town of al Housima.

Unfortunately, the driver could not be more specific because the woman had asked to be dropped in the busy town centre rather than at a house or apartment block.

Moroccan Naoul, who now lives near Marbella, in southern Spain, added: "I reported what had happened to local police as well as to the authorities in Spain when I got home.

"Nobody who saw what I saw would have any doubt that it was Madeleine.

"Ever since I saw her I can't get her out of my mind. I'm desperate for someone to find that girl and bring her back to her family."

Private detectives from the Barcelona-based Metodo 3 agency who are working for Kate and Gerry McCann were yesterday in al Housima trying to trace the child.

They have pictures of Madeleine showing her flecked iris. They also have copies of an artist's impression of a man seen near the McCann's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on the night Madeleine vanished carrying a bundle that could have been a child.

The taxi driver has already been interviewed by the Spanish private detectives.

But he has been able to give them no more information about the child, who was spotted by Naoul early in September.

The detectives are investigating a theory that Madeleine was snatched from Praia da Luz on May 3 then driven to the Spanish port of Tarifa, which is about 90 minutes away.

They believe she could then have been bundled aboard a ferry for the 35 minute trip to Tangier before she was transferred into the interior of Morocco by car.

The McCanns were tipped off about the sighting by a Spanish journalist who heard local police had become involved in the inquiry because of information Naoul supplied.

Their lawyers then passed on the details of the sighting to Metodo 3, who they have hired to specifically follow-up leads in North Africa and Spain. A source close to the McCann legal team said yesterday: "The woman was very quick-thinking when she saw the little girl who she thought was Madeleine.

"She wanted to be in the taxi to get a closer look but the woman brushed her off.

"That in itself is remarkable because we are told that taxi-sharing is quite a common occurrence in Morocco.

"The taxi journey was a long one but, again, we are told that long taxi rides in Morocco are not that unusual as a way of getting about."

A friend of the McCanns confirmed Metodo 3 were investigating the sighting.

He said: "It is one of a number of leads currently being followed up.

"We are not describing it as a breakthrough, nor are we dismissing it. It would be wrong to constantly get ones hopes up."

Gerry and Kate will tomorrow mark the six month anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance by attending a church service in their home village of Rothley, Leics.

Kate McCann's anniversary plea

Kate McCann today marks the six-month anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance by reaffirming her belief that she is still alive - and issuing a heartfelt plea for her release.

Kate, 39, said: "Six months is such a long time for a little girl to be separated from her family.

"We believe that our Madeleine is out there somewhere and retain hope that we can be reunited.

"Madeleine is a beautiful little person who deserves a loving and happy life. To ensure this there is no doubt that the best place for her to be is with her family.

"We know that somebody somewhere can make this happen.

"That somebody has the ability and power to bring back us back so much joy as well as bring peace to themselves. If you have any information relating to Madeleine's disappearance or whereabouts please pass it on to 00 34 902 300 213."

Kate wants anyone who has any snippet of news to ring the phoneline which is manned 24 hours a day by investigators in Spain.

To mark the six months since Madeleine vanished from the family's holiday flat in Praia da Luz on May 3, Kate and husband Gerry have released a previously unpublished picture of their daughter.

The photo, which shows her playing a park near the family home in Rothley, Leics, was taken on Saturday April 21 - exactly one week before they went on the ill-fated holiday to Portugal and 12 days before she disappeared.

Kate and Gerry will attend a special church service today to say prayers for their missing child.

A Moroccan police chief yesterday said officers were scouring the north of the country after the most recent sighting of a Madeleine lookalike.

The Mirror told yesterday how mum Naoual Malhi saw a little blonde girl with Madeleine's distinctive eye mark being bundled into a taxi in the town of Fnidk by a Moroccan woman and driven away.

It is thought the pair were taken 180 miles to the port of Al Housimi. Police chief Said Aloua said: "We have many officers working on the case. We are doing everything we can to find this poor little girl."

Meanwhile, an unnamed source yesterday claimed results of a second analysis on hair and bodily fluids allegedly found in the McCanns' hire car proved Madeleine's body had been in the boot.

The McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell added: "This is yet another unsourced, unsubstantiated article and we simply won't comment on it. Suffice to say Kate and Gerry have nothing to hide."
