MADELEINE ALIVE? WE'RE 100% CERTAIN
EXCLUSIVE SEARCH FOR MADELEINE DAY 199 Detectives reveal that they are closing in on Maddy kidnapper And new witness tells of seeing her with TWO suspects in van
By Lori Campbell Lori.Campbell@Sundaymirror.Co.Uk

Detectives hunting for Madeleine McCann last night said they were closing in on her kidnapper in a dramatic breakthrough in the case.

Francisco Marco, head of private detective agency Metodo 3 - hired to track the missing four-year-old by the McCanns - said: "We're 100 per cent sure she is alive. We are sure she was abducted. We are very, very close to finding the kidnapper."

He said a woman had come forward with vital new information.

The member of the public claims she saw a little girl matching Madeleine's description inside a stationary van in central Portugal two days after she was snatched.

The girl was sitting next to a woman while a man stood outside the vehicle, at a spot about 90 miles from where Madeleine went missing in Praia da Luz, Portugal.

The witness then picked out the woman suspect from photographs shown to her by investigators at the Spanish firm Metodo 3 as the woman had already been linked to the case. The man seen by the van has the same description as the suspect the McCanns' friend Jane Tanner saw carrying Madeleine away from their apartment on May 3.

And it's believed a THIRD man was also involved, acting as a spotter who watched the McCanns' routine of checking on their children during their week-long holiday.

Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry were last night praying the sighting on May 5 would help bring their daughter back.

A friend said: "They're encouraged by what investigators are saying and have been given new hope."

Mr Marco and his 40-strong expert team were hired by the McCanns two months ago as they became frustrated by the bungled Portuguese police investigation.

He believes Madeleine was abducted in a carefully planned operation, says he knows the area she is being held and insists the agency is close to discovering exactly what happened to her.

Marco, 45, refuses to say which country they think Madeleine is in, although Kate and Gerry have always been convinced it is Morocco.

The Sunday Mirror has been told the identities of all three suspects but has chosen not to print them so as not to jeopardise the inquiry.

A source inside Metodo 3 said: "We believe the sighting is the breakthrough we've been waiting for. The witness was able to give a detailed description of the man and woman to investigators.

"They showed her photographs, and she was able to pick out the woman with no hesitation.

"Detectives believe the kidnapper was helped by a third person who watched the apartment for days."

The McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell said last night: "Gerry and Kate will not comment on specific sightings, but are continuing to work closely with and have every confidence in Metodo 3."

The development comes as Gerry told of his belief Madeleine was snatched by a "predator" after the family was watched for days.

In a video diary to be screened on BBC1's Panorama, he says: "I've no doubt Madeleine was targeted and that makes us sick to the core to think someone was watching us and our daughter, then targeted her. I think the true word is a predator."

Kate and Gerry, both 39, left Madeleine and two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie sleeping in their apartment every night while they ate at a Tapas bar from which they could see the back of the flats.

Gerry believes the kidnapper lay beneath the children's bedroom window, hidden by a high wall.

In the film - shot by family friend John Corner as suspicion began to fall on them in August - he says: "We were looking at the back of the apartment and maybe the weak spots were at the front.

"It's a corner flat with trees overlooking it. Somebody could be hiding there watching out of view."

He adds: "I've absolutely no doubt that they've watched me go in, come back out, and then they've thought, 'That's the window of opportunity'.

"And you know a minute or two either side, and obviously one other witness saw him carrying a child away, but not realising it was Madeleine - that could have been a matter of 20 or 30 seconds and that's very frustrating."

A us documentary will also claim Portuguese police no longer believe Kate and Gerry - who are still official suspects - were involved in their daughter's disappearance and that DNA evidence is inconclusive.

Murat's girlfriend 'spotted with Madeleine' two days after she vanished

Police hunting for Madeleine McCann are investigating a new sighting of a child spotted with the girlfriend of official suspect Robert Murat.

A new witness has told detectives they saw Madeleine in Portugal two days after her disappearance, with a man and a woman.

The witness is believed to have identified the woman as Mr Murat's German-born girlfriend Michaela Walczuch.

McCann tells of 'predator' belief

Gerry McCann has spoken in a personal video of his belief that his family was watched by "a predator" in the days before his daughter's disappearance.

In the video, filmed by a family friend in August and to be screened on BBC One's Panorama, he tells of a "window of opportunity" taken by an abductor.

Witness 'saw Murat's girlfriend with Madeleine'

Detectives last night said they were "100 per cent sure" of finding Madeleine McCann alive after a witness told how she allegedly saw Robert Murat's girlfriend carrying a child wrapped in a blanket.

The woman claimed Michaela Walczuch, 34, handed the youngster over to a man in a car just two days after Maddy vanished from her holiday apartment on May 3.

Private eyes hired by Kate and Gerry McCann from the Spanish Metodo 3 agency said the witness told them Walczuch took the child from her car and bundled her into the other motor in central Portugal, 90 miles away from the resort of Praia da Luz.

A source said: "A witness identified Michaela Walczuch as the woman she saw handing a child to another man in central Portugal on May 5. She identified her after being shown a series of pictures."

"This new evidence has not come from the McCanns but from the detective agency they hired last month.

McCanns spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "Kate and Gerry are extremely encouraged by this latest sighting but, as ever, are not placing any emphasis on it without official confirmation."

The report comes as Portuguese police admitted they should never have abandoned the theory that Madeleine was abducted.

It is also claimed another man was with Walczuch but he stood outside the parked car as the handover took place.

Metodo 3 chief Francisco Marco claims the sighting is linked to one by the McCanns' friend Jane Tanner on the evening Madeleine vanished.

She said she saw a child in pink pyjamas and bare feet being carried away from the resort by a man.

The new witness called a special hotline set up by the agency, hired by Kate and Gerry after they became disillusioned with the police investigation.

Both Walczuch and Murat - who was named an official suspect in the case on May 14 - refused to comment last night.

German-born Walczuch lives in Lagos, near Praia da Luz, with estranged Portuguese husband Luis Antonio, 47, and their eight-year-old daughter.

She was first interviewed by police on May 14 about Madeleine's disappearance, along with boyfriend of two years Murat, 33, and pool cleaner Antonio.

Murat, who lives in Praia da Luz with his 71-year-old mum Jenny, has insisted he was at home the night Madeleine vanished.

Three of Kate and Gerry's friends, Russell O'Brien, Rachael Oldfield and Fiona Payne, all claim they saw the divorced ex-pat hanging around the resort after the alarm was raised.

But Jenny has branded the trio liars and backed up her son's story. In an interview for a Panorama programme tonight on BBC TV she says: "I just don't know why they are lying. On May 3 I'd been out taking the dogs out, which I do every single night of my life.

"I got home about eight and Robert was already there. He was in all of the evening.

"We were sitting in the kitchen talking. I would have known, if he'd gone out."

Today marks the 200th anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance. Since then her parents, of Rothley, Leics, have been named suspects by detectives who believe they may have killed their four-year-old daughter and dumped her body.

But police have confessed they were wrong to shift attention away from the kidnap theory.

A Policia Judiciaria source said: "Abduction was always one of the main lines of investigation. The initial suspicions point towards the little girl having been taken by a sexual predator.

"We don't know why that line of investigation was abandoned without concrete data to incriminate the McCann couple."

Tonight's Panorama also tells how GP Kate screamed in anger at her lawyer when he revealed she was being offered a deal to confess to killing Madeleine.

He told her if she admitted manslaughter, she would escape with only two years in jail. Gerry's sister Philomena was on the phone to the apartment when she heard Kate yell: "No, no."

Philomena said: "The emotion...her disgust, everything was being conveyed. the anger was palpable, you could feel it."

'McCanns not killers ..child was abducted'
Anton Antonowicz Us Correspondent In New York

Madeleine McCann's parents are innocent victims of their child's disappearance, a US TV investigation has concluded.

A two-month inquiry by CBS television's award-winning 48Hours said Kate and Gerry McCann neither murdered nor accidentally killed their daughter.

Investigator Joseph Moura concluded: "They are not killers. This child was abducted."

Cbs began by interviewing Jane Tanner, one of the so-called "Tapas Seven" holiday friends who ate with the McCanns in a local restaurant in Praia da Luz.

Jane, 38, who saw a child being carried after she left the group to check on her own child, told CBS: "I never thought in a million years that the child in pink pyjamas being carried up the road away from the apartment could have been Maddy." She added: "We've got nothing to hide."

Cbs sent Moura, a Boston-based private detective, to investigate events leading up to Madeleine's disappearance.

Portugese-born Moura remained under cover, carrying a hidden camera as he posed as a tourist in Praia da Luz. He spoke to hotel staff who, he claimed, had been reluctant to talk to the media. Moura said: "My brief was to determine whether Madeleine was abducted or whether the parents were involved."

He went on: "They said they were close enough to the unlocked apartment to see its sliding doors.

"But there's a wall between their line of sight and trees behind it. There was no possibility of seeing anyone go in and out.

"Having said that, these people had established a routine. Between 8.30pm and 12.30am every evening they would sit without the children among their seven friends.

"Media reports claimed staff had said they drank 14 bottles of wine between them on the night the child vanished. But restaurant workers I spoke with said it was more like six or seven. Here were these people, all gathered round to eat and drink. An unlocked apartment. An extremely regular routine.

"But staff only remembered one of the people at the table getting up and walking in the direction of the apartment.

"However many, 15 minutes goes by fast when you're drinking, talking and have a false sense of security built on the previous five nights when nothing happened."

A friend of the McCanns, film maker Jon Corner, said: "Those routine evenings were a predator's godsend, giving a would-be abductor the confidence to strike eventually." The CBS documentary quoted Ed Smart, whose 14 year-old daughter Elizabeth, was snatched from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, Colorado, in 2002 and was found nine months later. But, while she was missing, Smart remained a suspect. He said: "Gerry McCann phoned me and said 'People think we're not telling the truth. He said that as soon as the police focused on Maddy's DNA allegedly being found in the family's car hired after she disappeared, the search for their girl came to a close. I told him to remain strong - nothing else matters than finding a lost loved one."

Tv investigator Moura concluded: "That is where it remains.

"All the evidence I received says the McCanns were acting normally that night. They had that false sense of security, they drank wine with their friends. I'm just not buying anything else.

"Anything the police may have said about the DNA is inconclusive. Whatever you can say about the McCanns as parents, as human beings, they are not killers.

"This child was abducted by someone in the perfect situation. Doors unlocked, an established routine."

Scenes from a video diary of Gerry McCann, shot by film maker Mr Corner, will be shown on BBC's Panorama tonight. Gerry says he believes a child snatcher hid outside their flat before grabbing Maddy from her bed. He adds: "I have no doubt Madeleine was targeted. That makes us sick to the core - to think someone was watching us and our daughter.

"I've absolutely no doubt they've watched me go in, come back out and then they've thought 'That's the window of opportunity to get back in and get back out'.
