The public's enduring fascination with the Madeleine McCann case boosted BBC1's flagship current affairs programme Panorama last night by 3 million viewers.

Panorama's special on the missing child, shown on BBC1 at 9pm, attracted an average of 5.3 million viewers and a 22% share, according to unofficial overnights.

It included interviews with people who had direct contact with the McCanns in Portugal, including Jane Tanner, a member of the of the so-called "Tapas Nine", who talked publicly for the first time about the night Madeleine disappeared.

The show narrowed the gap with ITV1's reality show I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!, which drew an audience of 7.6 million and a 31% share in the same timeslot.

Last week, the Ant and Dec-fronted show debuted with 8.7 million viewers and a 38% share, compared with 2.2 million viewers and 9% for a Panorama episode on attention deficit disorder. The previous week, Panorama drew 2.4 million viewers and a 10% share for a special on fighting the Taliban.

Earlier in the evening, 10.1 million people tuned into watch soap EastEnders on BBC1, a 41% share at 8pm.

The soaps also pulled in the ratings for ITV, with Emmerdale notching up 7.9 million and a 40% share at 7pm, and Coronation Street delivering 10.9 million and 46% at 7.30pm. A second episode of the soap at 8.30pm attracted 10 million viewers and a 41% share.

At 7.30pm, some 4.2 million people or 18% of the audience viewed BBC1's Watchdog, the investigation show focusing on rogue traders and consumer rights, while on ITV at 8pm, a Tonight show on health policy for dealing with heart disease and cholesterol drew 4.2 million and 17%.

BBC1's DIY SOS pulled in 4 million viewers and a 16% share at 8.30pm with an episode helping a Nottingham couple who were building a bathroom with wheelchair access for their eight-year-old son.

Channel Five peaked early with Aussie soap Home and Away pulling in 1.5 million viewers and a 8% share at 6pm and the audience then dropping below 1 million until 10pm with documentary Cannibal Killer picking up 1.1 million viewers and a 7% share.

BBC2 outclassed Channel 4 for most of the evening. Strictly Come Dancing - It Takes Two drew 2.8 million viewers and a 13% share at 6.30pm, beating C4 soap Hollyoaks with 2.3 million and 11%.

This World, investigating Hugo Chavez's presidency in Venezuela, pulled in 1 million viewers and a 5% share for BBC2 at 7pm and quizshow Mastermind drew 1.5 million and 7% at 7.30pm. This compared with 800,000 and 4% for Channel 4 News, which ran until 7.55pm.

Rounding off a solid evening for BBC2 was University Challenge with 2.8 million viewers and a 12% ghare at 8pm, cooking programme Nigella Express with 2.6 million and 11% at 8.30pm, and business reality show Dragon's Den with 3.1 million and 13% at 9pm.

Channel 4's Dispatches, with political comedian Mark Thomas travelling to South America, India and the US to investigate Coca-Cola, drew 1.3 million viewers and a 5% share at 8pm.

At 9pm, 1.4 million viewers tuned in to the channel to watch a Time Team special on the renovation of the Ramsgate home of influential Victorian architect Augustin Pugin.

MADDY WATCH -
Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann

THE SUN page 21: “CASE CLOSED – Portuguese cops to quit on Maddie as suspect’s girlfriend linked to case”

“BAFFLED Portuguese police [surely, “bungling”] are set to CLOSE the Madeleine McCann investigation - despite startling new evidence emerging”

A police source tells Portuguese newspaper 24 Hors: “We are practically back where we started. The parents are still the prime suspects in hiding their daughter’s body - not of her death, which was probably accidental. But there is no firm proof”

And of the McCanns – the “Leicestershire doctors Kate and Gerry, both 39” - and Robert Murat? Suspects forever…

But never fear “the private detectives hired by her frustrated parents Kate and Gerry are working on sensational new leads that suggest she could be alive”

DAILY MIRROR page 15: “I HAVE AN ALIBI – Murat’s girl ‘in church’ when Maddy abducted”

Madeleine McCann goes missing and at the same moment Michaela Walczuch “was four miles from the family villa with Jehovah’s Witnesses”

Says a friend of hers: “She was at a church meeting in Lagos on the night. She told police this when questioned and they confirmed her story”

Says Clarence Mitchell: “Everything Metodo 3 does is within the law” – and on the meter?

DAILY EXPRESS front page: “MADELEINE – McCANNS ATE STILL THE MAIN SUSPECTS – Police ‘have closed case’”

Says a source to 24 Horas: ““Detectives are getting ready to pack their bags. Given the current state of the investigation, police chiefs are considering demobilising the team sent specifically to investigate the case and are even planning on moving Paulo Rebelo, the head of the investigation, onto tasks of greater responsibility”

A family friend of the McCanns says: “The worst thing that could happen is for the case to close and Gerry and Kate to remain official suspects” – That’s the worst thing?

Page 9: “Alibi will prove me innocent” - Ms Walczuch said she had an alibi that proves she is “absolutely not involved” in Madeleine’s disappearance

Says the Express: “Walczuch lives five miles from Praia da Luz in Lagos with her estranged husband Portuguese husband pool-cleaner Luis Antonio, 47, and their eight year-old daughter. She set up a property business called Romigen with Murat. In a bizarre living arrangement Murat lived at the flat for six months to conduct an affair with Walczuch while Antonio was still there”

So was she in Silves, where the Portuguese truck driver says he saw her hand over a child?

The “WORLD’S GREATEST NEWSPAPER” reports: “Silves was the scene of the attempted child abduction last year. Three-year-old Carolina Santos, who is blonde with blue eyes, was found being led away from the family cafe near the town of Silves by a man last year… Father Abel Santos, 40, said: ‘We were busy working in the kitchen and came out to find out she wasn’t there. ‘I searched around for her and saw her some way away on the road with a man I took to be Moroccan. We started towards them shouting and Carolina stopped and turned towards us. He disappeared around the bend.’ His wife Lina, 28, added: ‘It was very strange because Carolina is very shy and doesn’t go with strangers. When I asked her what happened she said he told her that he had another little girl for her to play with’” – Was Madeleine McCann kidnapped in Portugal before she went missing?

murat.jpgDAILY STAR page 11: “Parents still in police sights”

“A probe by new police chief Paulo Rebelo has concluded the four-year-old’s mum Kate and dad Gerry were rightly named suspects. But there is not enough evidence to charge them, according to police sources”

“MADDIE: COPS TELL PRIVATE EYES TO BACK OFF” – “THE £2,000-a-day private eyes hired by Madeleine McCann’s parents to find her were dismissed by police last night as ‘irrelevant small fry’”

How much do the Portuguese police cost to run?

Says a police source: “The McCanns’ investigators are small fry. The information they have gathered lacks credibility. They are only in places that have already been talked about. They are going over old ground. Miss Walczuch is not a suspect. She was at a prayer meeting. This was established months ago. There are no new leads. We know when the private detectives come and what they are doing here”

A source close to the prosecutor handling the case says: “If they speak to any witness who has been named in the case, or have access to a procedural piece of evidence or a case document, they are committing a crime which could be obstruction of justice”

So the Private detectives can’t even speak with Michaela Walczuch…

DAILY MAIL page 11: “Murat lover ‘was at Jehovah’s meeting as Maddie vanished’”

“German-born Miss Walczuch” was in church when Madeleine went missing

But: “She has failed to reveal, however, where she was on May 5 and June 15, when two separate witnesses claim to have seen her with Madeleine. Mr Murat’s lawyer, Francisco Pagarete, claimed yesterday this was because her diary had been seized by the police some months ago and has not been returned”

Her estranged husband, Luis Antonio, is “a pool cleaner and gardener”

“McCANN DETECTIVES ATTACKED” – “Police launched a contemptuous attack yesterday on the private detectives working for Kate and Gerry McCann”
Police call the PIs “small fry”

DAILY TELEGRAPH page 11:” Portuguese detectives ‘ready to abandon Madeleine inquiry’”

The team of detectives led by Paulo Rebelo are “on the brink of shelving the investigation”

THE INDEPENDENT, THE TIMES and THE GUARDIAN: No Madeleine news today

Madeleine is dead: Law chief's cruel outburst
Victoria Ward in Praia Da Luz

Madeleine McCann was almost certainly killed by any kidnapper because of her parents' intense publicity drive, Portugal's law chief said yesterday.

In a cruel blow to Kate and Gerry, Attorney General Fernando Jose Pinto Monteiro said: "Imagine, would an abductor with all this publicity and with the whole world having Maddy's photo still demand a ransom?

"If she was kidnapped, it's natural that her abductor has already killed her."

Mr Monteiro, whose blunt comments came days after it was claimed police were preparing to close the case, admitted the mystery may never be solved.

He told Portuguese magazine Visao: "There's a greater possibility of the girl being dead than being alive. If you asked me at this time if I was going to discover anything, I'd have to say 'I don't know'. This sort of crime is extremely difficult to crack."

Sources say detectives are convinced Kate and Gerry, both 39, accidentally killed three-year-old Madeleine, then disposed of her body.

But the law chief insisted: "All lines of inquiry are being pursued. There's not one that excludes the others."

He dismissed claims the investigation was not properly funded, saying: "More resources have been spent on this case than on any other."

Portuguese police have been accused of critical blunders, including the destruction of key DNA evidence.

Asked if he could assure the public that they were acting within the law, Mr Monteiro said: "No. I don't have control over them."

His assessment of the case came as a blow for Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, Leics.

Their spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "Making these comments is entirely unhelpful.

"In the absence of any evidence to the contrary, the possibility that Madeleine is alive and being held is still valid.

"Our investigators are working on that basis. They, too, have stated that they are confident that they'll find her alive soon."

Police union leader Carlos Anjos has said Kate and Gerry's drive to highlight Madeleine's disappearance could have endangered her.

He said: "They created a monster of infor mation which they lost control of."

Alipio Ribeiro, Portugal's most senior police officer, admitted last week: "We don't have the solution."

Officers recently claimed the public was sick of having the hunt "rammed down their throats".

Madeleine vanished from the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz on May 3. Police have been given an apartment at the complex to use as a base while they continue to question staff.

The move flies in the face of reports they were preparing to give up on the case.

McCanns reject claim Madeleine is probably dead

Portugal’s top legal officer today revealed that he thinks Madeleine McCann has been killed by her kidnappers.

And in an astonishing attack, he appeared to blame her parents Kate and Gerry McCann because the huge publicity they have generated would have made Madeleine “a liability” as a kidnap victim.

Attorney General Fernando Jose Pinto Monteiro said: "If she was kidnapped, it's natural her abductor has already killed her."

Talking about the McCann’s massive awareness campaign, Mr Monteiro said the publicity surrounding the case would have turned Madeleine into a liability if she had been abducted.

He added: "There's a greater possibility of the girl being dead than being alive."

His comments in an interview with a Portuguese current affairs magazine were tonight described as “entirely unhelpful” by a spokesman for the McCanns.

The couple, from Rothley in Leicestershire, were adamant today that their daughter, missing since May 3, could still be alive.

Spokesman Clarence Mitchell, said: "We still firmly believe that Madeleine is possibly alive. Senor Monteiro's comments are entirely unhelpful.

"Everything Kate, Gerry and their advisors have done to highlight Madeleine's plight since she went missing has been done with one aim in mind, and that's to find her.

"In the absence of any evidence to the contrary we believe she's still alive and our investigators are working hard to recover her as soon as possible."

In the interview, Mr Monteiro said all possibilities were still being examined and an unprecedented amount of resources were being devoted to solving the mystery.

He said: "All lines of inquiry are being pursued. There's not one that excludes the others. At this moment in time, if you asked if we were going to discover anything I would have to say 'I don't know'.

"The resources already spent in this case have not been spent on any other."

Madeleine went missing from her family's holiday apartment while her parents dined nearby with friends.

Madeleine McCann: DNA, Robert Murat And Paedos

Odd indeed that amid all the public spectacle and voyeurism there is front-page news of the criminal case.

The Express says: “Detectives believe that they have found the DNA of Madeleine McCann’s kidnapper.”

Now DNA, modern policing’s smoking gun and bloodstained overalls, has been located at the crime scene the villain can be brought to justice. And, maybe, Madeleine will be found.

Suspect Evidence

DNA belonging to six people was found at the McCanns’ apartment. There are five McCanns. A Portuguese police source says: “There is a new suspect. This could be vital evidence in the search for Madeleine.”

But who is this sixth person?

The Express says it is a stranger. And they really do mean a stranger. The DNA sample does not belong to Robert Murat, suspect number one, the only suspect. A spokesman for Murat says he “welcomed” the new evidence. Tuck Price says his client is “anxiously awaiting the chance to rebuild his reputation”.

But Murat cannot go just yet. The Express says he has been warned he could still face charges over pornography found on his computer. Mud sticks. And in itself the DNA proves nothing.

So who is the sixth person? This is a vital clue. Right? A source at the Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal laboratory in Coimbra says: “It is an important step in the investigation but the truth is that the DNA cannot be matched with any records. The evidence is very vague.”

So the police have DNA but no idea what to do with it. Indeed, the only people who could be cleared by this apparent breakthrough are Robert Murat and Russian “geek” Sergey Malinka, who has been questioned by Portuguese police.

The Express says the “best hope” is to pass it over to British police. As the Express notes, the UK has the world’s largest DNA database, “which includes the records of known paedophiles and anyone convicted of a sex crime.”

It also features the DNA of people who spit on buses. It is very thorough.
Meanwhile, the papers are focusing on the McCanns latest press conference.

Speculation And Paedos

Gerry McCann says: “We pray that she is being looked after and it is someone who wanted a little girl for their own who would look after her very well.

“We also pray that the person who has her gives her up voluntarily and drops her at a church or a safe place.”

Right they should keep the public focus on the story. And appeal for help.

But why should a journalist ask the McCanns if they think Madeleine has been kidnapped by a paedophile? Why does Getty McCann feel obliged to say: “It is a more upsetting scenario than any other. We have considered all scenarios as everyone has”?

What do we learn from that? The evidence is being gathered but the speculation remains rife. And we are watching the parents…anorak
