Viewing figures for an CCTV network that relays pictures from local cameras into resident's televisions has notched up higher viewing figures than Channel 4 programme Big Brother, reports The Register.
In January 2006 we reported on the Shoreditch Digital Bridge Scheme, a plan to give residents access to local CCTV footage. At the time there were objections from thise worried about infringment of civil liberties and in the end the Information Commissioner - responsible for data protection issues – deemed that the pictures had to be low resolution to prevent individuls from being identified.
The scheme is being touted as a success with a 600% increase in reports of graffiti and a 200% rise in reports of vandalism.
