Hurricane Flossie Sideswipes Hawaii

Image

This image provided by NOAA Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2007 shows the position of Hurricane Flossie taken at 6:30 a.m. EDT. Public schools closed and Hawaiians were warned to stock up on food and water as Hurricane Flossie roared toward the state early Tuesday. As if the storm wasn't enough, an 5.3 magnitude earthquake jolted the Big Island of Hawaii overnight. The eye of the Category 3 storm, with maximum winds reaching 115 mph, was expected to pass less than 100 miles from the islands and bring strong winds and heavy rain. (AP Photo/NOAA)

We have Snow in the Wellingborough area of Northamptonshire.

Have just scraped about an inch off the car when I moved it onto the drive just in case it settles later.

It's 1.6C and falling with 5mm of rain/sleet/snow so far with a driving wind from SE.

What ever falls is going to freeze !

First snow falls but Christmas in crisis

Wintry showers make roads tricky for drivers in County Durham
Image

The first snow of winter fell on Britain yesterday but food shortages are threatening the traditional Christmas festivities.

The 1,85m (3,560ft) summit of Snowdon in Wales saw its first flakes while bad weather also lashed parts of England and Scotland.

As transport dealt with the effects of the unexpected snow flurries, bookies William Hill said they were starting to see a shower of punters betting on a white Christmas.

The odds on snow in Aberdeen on December 25 are now 7/2 while they are 6/1 for Buckingham Palace.

It may be a white Christmas, but there might not be enough food to put on the table. A shortage of turkeys and potatoes could jeopardise the big day.

Five million turkeys could be culled because of bird flu, while bad weather has devastated the potato crop.

Champagne could also be off the festive menu, with wine merchant Berry Bros & Rudd warning that limited supply may lead to waiting lists for some bottles.

Have been following the development of low pressure systems in the Atlantic for a week or so after reading that a scientist had predicted a massive storm to hit England towards the end of November.

The Great Storm of November 2007

The current system is changing all the time and the daily updates for the pressure charts show slightly different paths this system might take. But there's another interesting Low developing South of Greenland that looks quite intense but time will tell if it get this far. There is warm air for any potential storm to feed off but weather is a difficult thing to predict as nature as the habit of making last minute chances which throws the computer models out.

Following on from the last post I discovered that the images I originally used are automatically updated daily.
So for ease of viewing the predicted charts for the day I've put all 3 here.

Remember this are predictions made by a complex computer model and while it is normally very good with the predictions ,that nature has a habit of throwing spanners in the works and therefore weather prediction isn't an exact science and there will always be a degree ,although small ,of error in predictions.

Batten down the hatches for Sunday.

If you look at the charts above you'll see the deep low to the West out in the Atlantic. This will make land-fall late Saturday night / Sunday Morning and looks to be bringing some very strong winds with it. Land-fall will be the North-Western Ireland then it looks to track SE across central parts of England before weakening and moving off toward Belgium and The Netherlands.

So far the only Weather warnings are for the SW of England and Wales but if tomorrows undated charts shows the Storm continuing to tighten then it could affect a lot more of the country.

Looking further ahead there are another two systems building in the Atlantic and the only thing that might stop them is an area of high pressure that looks to follow Sunday's storm but we'll have to see as the updates are posted. The high pressure will probably bring some low temperatures and typically frosts.

I'm not a Meteorologist but this is my interpretation of the charts.

Last night's / this morning's strong winds blew down quite a few trees in Northamptonshire and going by some of the remaining debris on the back roads I used this morning I'd say there has been a clean-up operation. One clue was signs for traffic lights in the worst affected part of the road ,noting that no lights have been seen today or yesterday on this stretch. There were other signs for the traffic coming out of Wellingborough which included the ones for the lights that I couldn't read as they was for the opposite lane.
