X FACTOR favourite Rhydian Roberts threatened to walk out — as he thinks he is being made to look a fool.

The oddball Welsh warbler, 24, threw a strop backstage because he felt the judges were setting him up with the wrong tunes — making him look like a pantomime act.

X Factor hot favourite Rhydian Roberts has never had a serious girlfriend and is chronically shy with women.

Owen Evans, who has known the mesmerising Welsh singer since childhood, revealed: "He doesn't go out much - and I don't remember him ever having a proper relationship. He used to impress the girls at our local karaoke with his Tom Jones renditions.

"They'd love him on stage - but when he came back to the bar he'd clam up completely.

"I wouldn't like to be the one to say if he's still a virgin. I can't say he's not. He's certainly never had a serious girlfriend - and he is also a committed Christian. But he's a gentleman who respects women and I guess he's waiting for the right person. He never drinks or smokes and is obsessed by his fitness."

Owen, 24, has known Rhyd since they were both 10. They went to Welsh public school Llandovery College together - where Rhydian was head boy - and stayed in touch when they went to different universities.

Owen recalled: "Even at 10 he was really well-spoken and intelligent. But he's never been embarrassed by that. He has always been his own man. He doesn't care what other people think and he will never change." Although Rhyd has turned in some spectacularly camp performances his best pal is adamant he is not gay. Owen insisted: "He camps it up on stage because you have to. He loves performing and can be a drama queen.

"But that's Rhyd for you - he'll camp it up if necessary. There are other male performers who wouldn't have the confidence. When he did the version of Go West he was supercamp, but I know for sure he is not gay. No chance."

Owen believes Rhyd, who last night sang Somewhere, from West Side Story, will win the ITV1 show - but says he could also have been a international rugby player if an bad injury at 16 hadn't slowed him down.

"He would definitely have made it as a professional. His dream was to play for Wales - but now it is to sing before a big Wales game," he says.

The thought of Rhydian having any sexual feelings at all makes us feel a bit uncomfortable, but now he’s admitted he’s got a big old crush on his mentor Dannii Minogue. “I do fancy Dannii,” he says. “She's hot and she's lovely to me. She flirts with us like crazy. It makes me blush.” Rhydian also says he’s hoping his luck with the ladies will improve now that he’s famous. “I've never been popular with women,” he admits. “I went to an all-boys school and I've been very focused on my career. But I can say categorically that I am 100 per cent straight.” However, the Christian singer admits that his religious beliefs mean that he won’t be having sex until after marriage. “I have been offered sex, like most men,” says Rhyd, “but if you believe in something, you can’t compromise. RHYDIAN'S VEX FACTOR

FAVOURITE Rhydian Roberts has slammed The X Factor, claiming: “No one gives a s*** about us.”

Just hours before tomorrow’s live semi-final, the blond Welshman has lifted the lid on his frustration behind the scenes.

Rhydian, 24, blasted: “Throughout the week all people care about is that they are making a television show. They treat us like absolute s***.

“It doesn’t seem to matter that we are all here because we are passionate about music. All they want is footage and drama to fill their show. This show is not all it’s cracked up to be.”

One of his gripes is not being given enough time to learn his songs because they have to record comedy sketches for spin-off show Xtra Factor.

He added: “We were up at 6am to record this stupid thing called X in the City, for Xtra Factor. It’s completely s*** and not what I signed up to do.”

The semi-finalists – Rhydian, Niki Evans, 34, Same Difference and Leon Jackson, 18, played a secret gig at a Carphone Warehouse in London.

Among the crowd were Daily Star contest winners, Sangeeta Goyal, 22, and her aunt Manjinder Kudhail, 41, from Birmingham.

Same Difference say they have the best bodyguard in the business – Simon Cowell.

Sarah Smith, 18, and brother Sean, 21, say Si, 48, has been fighting their corner against Louis Walsh, 55.

X Factor favourite Rhydian Roberts is heartbroken after discovering his ex-girlfriend is in love with a new man.

Rhydian, 25, met Mimi Terris earlier this year and they grew close over their shared passion for singing. He helped jazz starlet Mimi battle serious health problems - but their relationship stalled because of Rhydian's strict Christian beliefs.

Now back in her native Sweden, Mimi, 23, has a new boyfriend and Rhydian is said to be shattered.

A friend said: "He really likes Mimi a lot and he still wants to be in her life. But he is devastated because that looks unlikely to happen now she has moved on and is with her new love."

Rhydian has been back in touch with Mimi since he shot to stardom on the hit ITV1 show.

The couple have exchanged emails and reminisced about their shared past. Rhydian told the Sunday Mirror: "I was very close to Mimi. She was very attractive and we got on really well. I miss her a lot.

"She was great fun and we had good times together."

A close pal said: "Rhydian calls Mimi his ex-girlfriend and she has been contacting him asking him to remember the good times they shared. Rhydian has an image of being a straight-laced Christian who doesn't believe in sex before marriage, but somehow he still manages to get these stunning beauties knocking at his door."

Rhydian has also revealed how another ex-girlfriend - Hungarian pianist Marasfalvi Tunde, 26 - begged him to marry her, but he turned her down because he wasn't sure he loved her. The pair met in 2004 as music students at the Birmingham Repetoire. He said: "She was a fabulous girl and an amazing pianist. She was elegant, serene and I just thought, 'I want to be with this girl'.

"But as time went on Marasfalvi became more into me than I was with her. She said she wanted to get married and told me that if I popped the question, she would say 'yes'. But it didn't really work because she went back to Hungary and I was in England."

Despite dating for a year, the pair never had sex. "If you're in love, sex is OK but I'm not sure I was in love with Marasfalvi," he said.

"I try not to have intercourse. I would sleep in the same bed as a girl - I'm not that boring.

"The practice of sex leads to unhappiness and problems.

"She's a fabulous girl but it just didn't work out. Now I am saving sex for the right person and someone I genuinely love."
