Police 'rushed Madeleine McCann case'

Madeleine McCann’s parents might have been spared the anguish of being named suspects over her disappearance if Portuguese police had not rushed their case through before a change in the law, it has been claimed

Mobile Phones Could Be Vital in Madeleine McCann Investigation

Portuguese detectives that are on the Madeleine McCann case are discussing three key areas with British forensic experts.

It is said that a Mobile phone from Praia da Luz has had a big turn in the investigation, which has led to interviewing or re-interviewing witnesses.

MADDIE: SHOCK NEW MOBILE CLUE

POLICE last night claimed a breakthrough in the Madeleine McCann case, thanks to shocking mobile phone evidence.

Detectives have been studying records of conversations between parents Kate and Gerry, both 39, and their holiday dinner pals – the so-called Tapas Seven.

They have been using satellite technology to pinpoint the precise locations of callers around the time Madeleine disappeared.

And forensic experts are now said to be examining a blood-stained towel found close to a disused barn at a remote location some distance from Praia da Luz.

Last night sources close to the investigation said the analysis had led to a “big development”.

Sources said detectives are focusing on an alleged conversation between heart consultant Gerry and holiday pal Dr Russell O’Brien, 36.

Gerry insisted he was within 4km of Praia da Luz when the pair talked on June 10, but it is alleged technicians have discovered he made the call 28km from the resort.

The pair are due to be quizzed about the alleged discrepancy next week.

Portuguese paper Correio da Manha said the mobile phone data was at the top of the agenda when Portuguese forensic experts met British police in Leicester last week. Its report said: “The records of the McCanns’ telephone calls on days before and after the disappearance were discussed.’’

Former Surrey Police detective Mark Williams-Thomas, who has closely followed the case, said: “This provides vital information.’’

The McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell was unaware of the development.

The couple, from Rothley, Leics, deny any involvement.

Madeline McCann cops in suspect 'smear'

Police in Portugal were yesterday accused of waging a deliberate smear campaign against Kate and Gerry McCann.

Detectives named the couple, both 39, suspects in their daughter Madeleine's disappearance just eight days before new laws would not have allowed it, it is claimed.

The McCanns' lawyer Carlos Pinto de Abreu suggested police may have fast-tracked the investigation to ensure the pair were put in the frame over missing Madeleine, four.

Kate and Gerry were named official suspects on September 7. But laws introduced on September 15 state police must have firm evidence before naming someone an official suspect, or arguido.

Asked if he thought the police had rushed the process to bypass the new law, Mr Pinto de Abreu said: "I don't know, but yes, it's possible." He added: "Before September 15 you could be made an arguido without actual evidence against you."

A source close to the couple. of Rothley, Leics, said: "Clearly this was a deliberate smear campaign. The police have been intent on that from the start." Madeleine disappeared from Praia da Luz on May 3.

Police 'no longer sure' Madeleine's dead
Portuguese admit lack of proof

Police teams investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have admitted: "We are no longer sure that she is dead."

A spokesman in Portugal said: "We do not have proof the girl is dead. If we had that kind of evidence we would not be considering the theory she was abducted."

Officers had been working on the line that Madeleine died in her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on May 3, aged three. But they concede they have no proof.

Clarence Mitchell, the spokesman for parents Kate and Gerry McCann, said: "The thrust of the inquiry for the last six or seven months has been wrong. If the police now believe that abduction is the strongest possibility, that is very encouraging. Madeleine did not die in the apartment.

"The police should be focusing on who took her - and finding her."

Yesterday, Kate and Gerry issued a new appeal for witness after it emerged police had still not tracked down all the people who were holidaying in the resort on the night Madeleine vanished.

British police have never been given a comprehensive list of every tourist who was staying in the resort.

And some forces are still searching for a handful of known people who could hold the key to the mystery.

Mr Mitchell said: "We know that there are a number of British people who were staying in or around the Ocean Club when Madeleine was abducted and who have not yet been interviewed by British police.

"We appeal to any UK residents who have not been spoken to. Please come forward."

In his weblog Gerry asked for emails to investigation@findmadeleine.com or calls to the hotline of their Spanish investigators on +34 902 300 213.

Gerry is one of 12 people nominated for Scot of the Year, alongside Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
