My word it is sooooo cold. It doesn't seem to have warmed up all day.

White Christmas unlikely, experts and punters agree

It is going to be grey Christmas rather than a white one this year, according to the Met Office, and the British public are in agreement, with hardly any bets being placed on a snowy Christmas Day.

The cold and frosty weather across many parts of the country looks likely to give way to milder conditions heading towards December 25, experts predict.

Forecasters are expecting temperatures to return to normal, with bands of rain across the UK, making the south and east damp and grey. Brighter skies and some showers will follow from the north.

However, the Met Office will still be monitoring a number of cities across the country to declare whether snow has fallen. For a Christmas to be officially white, snow must have fallen on the roof of Buckingham Palace in London.

Met Office forecaster Frank Saunders said: "With a few days to go, the weather has been seasonal with fog and frost. However, as we head towards the big day, cloud and rain will move in from the west and it is unlikely that many of us in the UK will see a white Christmas."

Bookmakers William Hill said that punters are staying away from the traditional white Christmas bet. "Not only is the five day forecast out saying that it is not going to be a white Christmas, but for the first time I can remember there hasn't been any snow in the run-up to Christmas, which normally encourages people to put a bet on," said spokesman Rupert Adams.

On another note I've experienced the worst Fog tonight that I've ever driven in !
From Planet Ice MK to passed Newport Pagnal (A509) it must have been not more than 100ft visibility as all you could see was the road markings and then it seemed like it was only a cars length ahead. We were only doing around 30 MPH any more and it would have been impossible to follow the road.

Waiting for desperately some snow to rain over here for Christmas. But when the wind blows from Atlantic ocean there's no hope of snow...

Another foggy day for parts of England today, I see.

And despite all the high-tech equipment and methods, fog can still ground flights, due to the fight that pilots still need to rely on their eyes, some of the time!

Driving a car in fog is terrifying enough! It's happened to me, a couple of times, in the (smallish) mountains around Dublin - one minute it's 'normal', next minute you can't see a thing. Going forward is frightening, but turning back could be even worse, if there's a car coming too quickly behind you.

In MK Friday night GG we were relying on the Sat Nav for warning of the roundabouts as you couldn't see them at all until you were about to enter them ! At least the sat nav gave you advanced warning and a count-down as you approached. With navigational aids I don't known how we'd have go home.

Today started off with a heavy frost where the previous night's Fog had froze. Then by 9 am the Fog returned with very poor visibilty. It lift around 1720 but returned again within the hour. Having just been into the kitchen it has cleared again and for the first time today I could see the lights on the horizon !

Temperature rose from a low of -0.1C around 9am to 3C around 1500 then fell to around 1.6C around 1800 and has very slowly risen to 1.9C where it is currently sitting.
With any luck it'll continue to rise so I don't have to spend too long scraping the ice off the car for work in the morning. The barometer is falling slowly from 1029mb to 1025mb.
Current wind direction is 248 degrees (approx. WSW).
