A good interview, IMHO, and I thought it deserved it's own thread. I hope it's alright to do so.

It covers BB, at the end. I agree wholeheartedly with what she says, except obviously for the controversial comments about BB4

What Kate Lawler did next

Apr 11 2008 By Jon Perks

Kate Lawler isn’t your average ex-reality TV show contestant. She has a proper job. The Kerrang! Radio DJ spoke to Jon Perks about Birmingham, Big Brother – and boys.
Kate Lawler

"Where are all the fit men in Birmingham? Can they please get in contact with me? Where are they?”

Kate Lawler would like “to meet a boy” – not that she has any time for a relationship right now.

“I am literally too busy,” admits the petite blonde. “I would like to meet a boy but I haven’t found anyone yet – and this sounds horrible, but any man I’ve come in contact with in the last year and perhaps seen once or twice, after a few times of seeing them I kind of resent them for taking up my time!! No time for boys really... Tim Shaw’s the only man in my life!”

Shaw – all 6ft 5in of him – is Lawler’s co-host of The Morning After, Kerrang Radio’s new-look breakfast show which launched last autumn. The pair first met when Kate, who six years ago won the third series of Big Brother, was a guest on his nigh ttime Kerrang! show, The Asylum.

“We got on really well – apart from one incident where I hit him – but we made up,” she smiles. “He was really fun to work with and we just stayed in touch and became friends, spoke on the phone a few times, hooked up and chatted about ideas and what we could do together workwise... and then when they asked him to do breakfast on Kerrang and said ‘who would you like to do it with?’, he said ‘I’d like to do it with Kate...’”
Kate Lawler with fellow Kerrang! presenter Tim Shaw

Unlike the majority of Big Brother contestants, Lawler, 27, has survived beyond the classic Warhol 15 minutes of fame.
She has already had over an hour.

As well as token appearances on other reality shows (Love Island and Celebrity Wrestling), Kate presented Channel 4’s early morning offering RI:SE, has worked on Capital radio and has carved out a successful career as a club DJ, playing techno to the masses at venues both here and abroad.

“It was a really difficult decision to make,” says Kate on her decision to take the Kerrang job. “At first I said no to Tim because as much as I’d love to do it I couldn’t move to Birmingham – I’d miss all my family and friends [in London] too much and I wouldn’t be able to [club] DJ any more,” she recalls.

“Half of my friends said, ‘You’ve got to do Kerrang’. My DJ manager was saying, ‘You’ll not be able to tour if you go to Kerrang’. So I said to the boss ‘can I still go on tour if I do the breakfast show?’ and we made a compromise so I can still do that; there’s been a lot of gigs I’ve had to turn down since October, but it’s been worth it.”

The Morning After is one of those shows that sounds anarchic, but is clearly well planned – regular features include Singing Travel (where listeners choose the tune each morning), the Reverse Charge game (Lawler and Shaw call someone, pretending it is a reverse charge call to see how long they will stay on the line) and celebrity guest callers who Shaw will often cut off midstream if he gets bored.

In amongst all of that are Shaw and Lawler, the latter all too aware of her role in this radio ratatouille.

“I am ultimately a sidekick, but I can be like, ‘Tim – I mean it... listen to me’ – Lucy our producer laughs and says sometimes he will do what I tell him to do – normally he will never listen to any women.

“Apart from his wife, I’m the only woman that can walk all over him; he’s the most intelligent, witty and rude man I’ve ever met – all in one – you cannot win an argument with him, no matter who you are.”

Despite her own sidekick tag, Lawler is no shrinking violet – far from it. She talks almost non-stop during our interview, pausing only to nibble on another piece of the Easter egg she’s brought in with her.

“It’s Kerrang 24/7,” she says. “I don’t feel like I live in Birmingham, ’cos every day I spend at Kerrang and then I’ll be doing something or other with Tim and then there are pre-records – and then I’ll go home and be surfing on the net for music to buy for the weekend...

"I have been to a couple of restaurants, and my friend Amy and I went to Mechu the other night – Student Night – oh my god, it was full of young people, I felt like an OAP in there,” she chuckles. “I said to Amy, ‘This is ridiculous, we’re getting chatted up by 14-year-olds...’

“I like foreign boys, that is my thing,” she smiles. “I like boys that look Italian or Spanish; dark haired, dark features, tall – and preferably if they’ve got a little broken English and they can’t say things properly – I find that really sexy.”
Kate Lawler models Ann Summers lingerie

While she may not currently have a man in her life, Lawler is clearly loving life and living it to the full – even somehow fitting in training for the Flora London Marathon, which she is running in aid of Cystic Fibrosis. If she and her friend Joey raise over £20,000, she’s promised to run in underwear from her recent Ann Summers modelling assignment.

“I’m not training!” she blurts (in between mouthfuls of egg). “No, I am training, but not as much as I should; I went to see a physiotherapist the other day and he said ‘You shouldn’t be doing the marathon, your knees are buggered’.

"I’ve said if we raise 20 grand I’ll run it in my underwear, which I don’t think we are gonna do ’cos at the moment we’ve only raised a grand; it’s just something I’ve always wanted to do, for charity and for myself... even if I have to walk it I’m going to finish it – but I am scared about this ‘nipple bleeding’ and stuff like that, ‘chaffing’...

“I like the way my life is at the moment,” says Kate. “I get to do the radio Monday to Friday and it keeps me very well behaved ’cos I have to get an early night in the week – if I didn’t have this job you can get into this party lifestyle; before Kerrang I was going out every week and getting wasted and I wasn’t looking after my body... friends said: ‘Kerrang is going to do you good ’cos you’re going to have a nine to five, you’re going to have to go to bed – you need to do it for yourself or you’re going to go off the rails’

“I think I was going a bit too party mad, but when you’re a DJ and you get into a club it’s ‘right – want do you want? A bottle of vodka?’ – people just feed you, you get absolutely wrecked, and I don’t want to be the next Amy Winehouse – I want a career and stability for when I’m older.”

* Kate on Big Brother: “It’s completely changed, I wouldn’t do it now; I wouldn’t have done it after Series Four – that was fab – but it’s certainly been great for me, I will never look back.

“I don’t like the programme now, nobody gets an easy ride, they only want to see people crumble, break down, go mental – it’s not a positive thing; people used to enjoy nice things about Big Brother.

“But that programme opened up a lot of doors for me and if it wasn’t for Big Brother I wouldn’t have done or been able to do a lot of things in my life and help my family the way I have... I am pleased I did, but I’m one of the lucky few.”

“How do you define success after Big Brother? A lot of people would say that success is being in the papers – for me success is doing well in a job, whatever it may be, whether it’s in the public eye or not.

“I firmly believe if I hadn’t done Big Brother I’d have done really well in the job I was doing ’cos I was on my way to doing well, I was really keen to become a trader.

“Going on Big Brother wasn’t to turn myself into a celebrity – I don’t like the whole ‘celebrity’ thing – I get so embarrassed when I get called it, it’s just ridiculous I’m not a celebrity, I’m just a normal girl.

“I did a few magazine things which were good money and helped pay for my flat, but I liked my life so much before I went in, I was very happy. I think a lot of people do the show to find something they’re missing.”

()^ Yeah, a pretty good interview.

The Kerrang!Radio job is certainly interesting due to the fact that Kate met someone who wanted her - ie Tim Shaw - as opposed to getting TV or radio jobs in the first year after being the Big Brother winner where hype & profile is a major factor - not that Kate exploited the hype very much unlike some others from her year & certain others that followed.

It's nearly two years since Kate first met Tim Shaw on his Asylum Show, an appearance which ended with Kate apparently 'hitting' him during a prank where he was goading her - but I did say at the time that Kate's appearance on the show was unusual because it wasn't just as a guest - Tim Shaw was actually asking Kate what she wanted to do regarding radio; he was quite clearly fascinated by her, as he still is today.

Why Kate struck a chord with a cynic like Tim Shaw, I don't really know? BB3 has only been mentioned once or twice and he appears to have very little knowledge of it. I think Tim Shaw noticed Kate after - the fact that he lived in Kent for a time might have something to do with it.

Commercial radio is very competitive so it remains to be seen how long 'The Morning After' will last & Kerrang!Radio despite its pretentions to be national via DAB & the internet is still essentially a West Midlands radio station.
It's quite clear that Tim Shaw, though being the most acerbic & cynical DJ on radio who absolutely detests Big Brother & the quick route to fame, etc., has alot of affection for Kate(Tim told Neg from Balls of Steel he & Kate are 'best mates') - & it's also apparent that Kate has a far more intense relationship with him than she ever did with her TV husband, Iain Lee or her previous radio husband, Andi Peters. Totally platonic, of course. Tim Shaw is totally outrageous at times on radio & Balls of Steel but quite clearly a family guy at home.
Having said all that they could fall out big time because they are both combustible characters!

Sounds like Kate thought Kerrang!Radio was too good an opportunity to turn down but as Vilt said a few months ago there was a worry that taking the job in Birmingham would affect Kate's DJ career where she has had the most career success since BB.
Yes, Kate has undoubtedly missed out on opportunities such as high-profile midweek gigs in London or abroad, but she's still very busy. However, I would say Kate must be in Ibiza at certain times of the summer if she wants to truly establish herself as a top name in House DJ-ing. Hopefully, there will be a favourable reaction across the dance media to Kate's EP.

I like Kate's comments about the ridiculous nature of 'celebrity' - no doubt one of the many reasons Tim Shaw likes her.

This is a TWENTY minute podcast interview with Kate for the Northern Echo-it's a year old but fairly interesting for all that. The interviewer must be the most laid back and hesitant interviewer ever. Some things ring a bell so maybe Kate did a mag around this time-I remember about the Paris offer. One thing Kate said she was thinking of moving to east london with some friends. Some Dj stuff to publicise the PO but a lot of old general questions that Kate seemed happy to answer on the day.

Halfway

Quite funny today on Kerrang! with Tim Shaw pressing Kate on her private life in relation to the story in the 'intelligent' press regarding a government survey questioning us tax payers about our sex lifes!

Apart from many a Big Brother contestant, male or female, & those people in the media obsessed with being celebrities, Kate is average!
Mind you, Jade is, er, never going to be the first name mentioned as someone desired - ie the same reason Jade was & still is obsessed with Kate Lawler. :D ;)

What a terrible interviewer!! Almost painful to listen to. He must have been new at it I would think.
