Star Trek Actor To Marry

Actor George Takei, best known for playing Mr. Sulu on Star Trek, has said he plans to wed his long-time partner now that the California Supreme Court has overturned a state ban on gay marriage.

Takei, 71, said he and Brad Altman, his 54-year-old business manager, are going through the "delicious process" of planning their nuptials.

"There's no tradition in terms of same-sex marriage. We are designing and shaping our own wedding in our own way, so it's going to be singular and unique," added Takei, who first made his wedding plans known on his website during the weekend.

Comedian Ellen DeGeneres has also announced plans to marry her girlfriend, actress Portia de Rossi. Both celebrities, like gay and lesbian couples across the state, said they were moved by last Thursday's California Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage.

"As an American, I was delighted that we're getting closer and closer to more truly being faithful to the Constitution," said Takei.

Dick Martin Dies

Dick Martin, one half of the comedy team whose Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In took US television by storm in the 1960s, making stars of Goldie Hawn and Lily Tomlin, has died at the age of 86.

Martin, who went on to become one of television's busiest directors after splitting with Rowan in the late 1970s, died of respiratory complications at a hospital in Santa Monica.

"He had had some pretty severe respiratory problems for many years, and he had pretty much stopped breathing a week ago," family spokesman Barry Greenberg said.

Martin was surrounded by family and friends when he died, Greenberg said.

Laugh-in, which debuted in January 1968, was unlike any comedy-variety show before it. The show was broadcast in the UK on BBC Two.

Rather than relying on a series of tightly scripted song-and-dance segments, it offered up a steady, almost stream-of-consciousness run of non-sequitur jokes, political satire and madhouse antics from a cast of talented young actors and comedians that also included Ruth Buzzi, Arte Johnson, Henry Gibson, Jo Anne Worley and announcer Gary Owens.

Presiding over it all were Rowan and Martin, the veteran nightclub comics whose standup banter put their own distinct spin on the show.

Exclusive: Russell Brand set to conquer America with own chat showBy Louise Ford and Lara Gould, TV Editor

Russell, 33, has been signed up to film a new eight-episode US series in which the flamboyant comic will interview A-list stars.

He was snapped up by bosses of UK-based Box TV after appearing on David Letterman's talk show while promoting his new movie, Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

The comic-turned-movie star - who has his own BBC2 radio show and last year quit presenting E4's Big Brother's Big Mouth - has now been signed up to a top American TV channel.

An insider said: "Russell has given some brilliant US interviews and TV execs have gone crazy for him. They were particularly impressed with his performance on the David Letterman show.

"They think he is likeable, charming and a bit of an oddball and presenting his own TV show is the obvious next step."

The comic lothario's new Stateside role follows in the footsteps of other British comedians, including Little Britain stars David Walliams and Matt Lucas.

The comedy duo are in the US filming spin-off show Little Britain in America.

Russell, meanwhile, has been building his profile with stand-up gigs in Los Angeles.

He said: "I really like LA - I'd heard it was a superficial and vacuous space and, astonishingly, I fit right in."

Unlike other British stars, Russell - who starred with Colin Firth in last year's St Trinian's movie - isn't likely to settle in America. He recently confessed he missed his cat and his home.
