There's a balance Kate has to maintain regarding her House DJ career alongside her presence on Kerrang!Radio & other mainstream opportunities which will happen for her - ie maintain her coolness & credibility on the dance scene.
It can be precarious, & Love Island was a bad decision, but Kate's not in a bad place at the moment - breakfast DJ on Kerrang!Radio & one of the hardest working House DJs out there.
The Daily Star goss girls must be very confused because they thought Kate was someone shallow who thought there was validity in being a Big Brother 'celebrity' when Kate only feels validated through career, hence her move to Birmingham.

Just out of interest as someone who did the club thing a few years ago and sees how good Kate's doing: it's funny to call up Kate's Myspace page & see Kate's elevated her namesake, top DJ/PRODUCER, beloved of the DJ magazines, Steve Lawler, to the top of her 'friends' list.

Steve Lawler was once asked about Kate pursuing a DJ career, but hadn't got a clue about Kate & Big Brother!
I think he has now!

Kate's added a couple of new songs to her Myspace, the first is called "twenty years of acid", ahh I remember Acid House, what fun.

Bit disappointed Kate's not on the bill for Gatecrasher or Creamfields this year - but still happy to see Kate's still forging ahead on the dance scene while balancing her mainstream job at Kerrang!Radio.
Kate's going on a mini tour of Ireland this weekend, Galway & Sligo.

Just noticed on Kate's myspace that she's got gigs at top clubs in Ibiza - September.

Sankeys, Kate's residency has been voted the 17th top club in the world by top DJs in this month's DJ magazine - other clubs in the UK & abroad that Kate has played are also in the elite top 100.

The Toolroom release is fantastic for Kate - especially with top DJ Mark Knight being one of their guys.
BTW, one of the first messages on Kate's myspace was from Mark Knight saying he'd love Kate to be on his myspace - I think he was being rude!!!

Interview with Kate Lawler

Ex-Big Brother winner Kate Lawler is to play a DJ set at The Apartment nightclub in Swindon on Saturday 16th February. Read our interview.

Kate Lawler, 27, was the first female in the whole world to win infamous reality TV show Big Brother, and since she appeared on the UK version of the show in 2002, her career has rocketed.

TV presenting gigs soon followed and she co-hosted Channel 4 breakfast show RI:SE for nearly a year before it was axed. Another less well-known presenting job was for late night dating show Playdate on ITV2.

Multi-skilled Kate has also written columns for The Sun newspaper, both OK and New magazines, and appeared in ITV reality shows Celebrity Wrestling and Love Island.

However, music is closest to Kate's heart. She is currently doing a spot of radio presenting on Kerrang! Radio presenting The Morning After show every weekday morning from 7.00am.

She's not just a rock chick though, as over the last few years Kate has carved out a successful career as a club DJ and has spun discs in venues as far afield as Europe and Japan.

In just the last 12 months she has played alongside the likes of Eric Prydz, Sebastien Leger, Steve Angello and Nick Vanciulli. She is currently enjoying a monthly residency at top Manchester nightspot Sankeys.

We caught up with Kate recently to talk about her burgeoning DJ career and to take a look back at Big Brother.
How did you get into DJing?

I dabbled in DJing before but only on my friends Technics when I was really young, it was just something that I always wanted to learn to do.

And when I was in Big Brother, Adele was a DJ and I said: "Oh when we get out you must teach me how to DJ." Then I just ended up doing it myself – buying some decks and messing around on them.

One thing led to another and I ended up DJing at my mates bar and then people heard I was doing it and I started getting bookings and then basically flourished, as I like to say! I'm really enjoying it.
It's taken you around the World as well hasn't it

I've DJed in Brazil, Japan and Spain. I'm doing a tour of Australia at the end of the year as well hopefully. Now I've got my radio show I can't DJ as much, but I still do it every weekend, and I'm producing tracks as well now which I think is really important for me to be seen as a credible DJ.

Tell us about the production work you're getting involved with

I did a remix last year of a Gold Trixx featuring Andrea Brown track which was a remix I did for fun. It got played in Ibiza and on Radio 1, and I was really pleased with the reception it got.

So I properly started producing at the end of last year and three tracks have been signed up by a really cool dance record label, and they're going to be released this summer.

One's very House, one's quite Techno and one is quite Acid House. I love my Acid House from back in the day when I used to go clubbing when I was 15! I think all of them represent my style as a DJ.

A lot of the time I get pigeonholed because I've been on the TV. People don't really know what type of music I play and expect a certain thing from me. Producing for me is very important. I'm very happy with how it's going.

So now you're working for Kerrang! Radio as well does that mean you're a rock chick as well?

I have always been into my rock. But it’s not just Heavy Metal on Kerrang!, we play a very broad spectrum of rock music. Indie, Britpop, soft rock, loads of different things, I absolutely adore the music we play at Kerrang! And the breakfast show I work on is great.

You found fame on Big Brother in 2002 but so many people who've gone into that house have had a really negative experience

Anyone going into Big Brother takes a risk of them coming out of it negatively. But I was 100% positive that I wouldn't come out of it badly - that I would do well because I did have my head screwed on. I knew for a fact that when I went in there - whatever happened if I came out afterwards and people didn't like me - then I'd just go abroad, as I've always wanted to travel anyway.

And I knew I had friends and family around me that would support me, so I knew I was in a safe situation. I was quite happy to go back to my old job afterwards, even though I didn't. It's important to have those things organised before you go in there.

A lot of people go in there from broken homes and broken relationships or don't really know where they're going in their lives, so it’s not going to do them any good.

What do you think of the show these days?

I don't think its real anymore. It used to be about a fly on the wall TV series and now too many people are trying to make it into a pantomime and that's why I don't think many people are watching it anymore. Ten million people watched the eviction night I was in and now they're lucky to get two million. I just think it’s got a little bit too forced. It's not real anymore.

Finally, back to the DJing, what can Swindon clubbers expect from your set at The Apartment on Saturday 16th February?

They shouldn't expect anything fluffy and girly! They should expect some raw, underground, deep, Techno House music.

I hope they're all going to have a good time and dance. I'm looking forward to DJing in Swindon as I've never played there before so hopefully they'll have a good night.

Still, Kate's MOST Important CAREER is as a House DJ - her ultra-cool EP, 'Screw You' release is out there - how cool is that?

Dream on Mark Ronson &, er, Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse &, er, BB7's Aisleyne(Amy's best friend, don't you know) & the like, etc., & all those twits who crave to be 'celebrities' in the tabloids & seleb magazines, because they 'drink' in Camden.

Kate came out of the BB house as nice as she went in, and all her hard work to make it to where she wants to be since she came out is a credit to her down-to-earth personality.
I have aways thought her critics had the mind-set as several of the nasty housemates she had the misfortune to spend the summer of BB3 locked up with.

Kate Lawler -Screw you

Kate Lawler was thrust into the public eye at the tender age of 22 with the dubious honour of being the first female to win Big Brother UK. Taking up DJing following her coronation, her climb to prominence has been sheer and she is now one of the most in demand, not to mention credible female DJ’s in the UK with a residency at Sankeys in Manchester and regular gigs in Ibiza. Even though a fledging career, Lawler has already played alongside a catalogue of serious players from Prydz and Guetta to Fancuilli and Zabiela.

Title track Screw You is the first of three eight-and-a-half minute tracks on the release. Demonstrating a fluid control techno that’s minimal but tough, there’s an intricate and subtle build into a very engaging piece of music. A heads-down slow burner which keeps the interest throughout, this is an astoundingly accomplished piece of deep techno. Second track 20 Years On Acid is my favourite of the trio, reminiscent of the early Prodigy/Orbital warehouse rave sound. A warm swampy synth reverberates under the drum as laser FX swoop over a cracking layered drum pattern, perfect for a 1am tech-house sweat session. Water Baby shows Lawler’s penchant for progressive house with a throbbing gentle refrain bubbling over into a pounding kickdrum. Warm, simple and generous, this is another wonderful track from the talented producer.

Screw You EP is an astonishingly good debut regardless of Kate Lawler’s extraordinary profile, with three fantastic and diverse pieces of techno which showcase her versatility and silence any notion of Lawler being another celebrity DJ blagging her way to Ibiza on the back of her glossy status. Already working on one of the most exciting contemporary labels, and with a residency at one of DJMag’s top 50 clubs in the world, this EP cements the notion that this lady certainly has a bright future. I sincerely hope Lawler does come to Australia in 2008 as mooted as this is one hungry young talent whose debut EP stands up to the harshest scrutiny – so there you have it – and if you don’t like it, Screw You.
