OK a technical question.
I've just bought a HD Satellite receiver which is an older model with DVI output along with others.
The only spare input on the TV is the VGA PC input so if I use a DVI to VGA adaptor will the TV work with the receiver ?

The only other option is to get a HDMI switch box and a DVI to HDMI cable and double up on one of the HDMI inputs. I currently have my Freeview receiver and my DVD player in the only two HDMI sockets on the TV.

The first option costs nothing the second around £10 - £20 depending on where I buy the bits from.

Any ideas ?

I've been after one of these receivers for a long time but they have been very expensive from the start and are still selling for £200 - £300 but I got one off eBay tonight for £100 brand new. The one thing it does which almost every other HD receiver doesn't is display the 4:2:2 broadcast links and there are many interesting sporting broadcasts that only appear in this format plus things like NASA broadcasts which are always carried by the regular Press Broadcaster on the satellite at 10 East.

Looking into the spec of the VGA input I think I'd be better off getting a HDMI switch box.
I've mailed a shop on eBay that have all the cables plus a remote switcher which is better than the mechanical switches as they tend to go noisy. I want to check that they combine the postage other wise it'll cost quite a bit extra ,but they haven't replied yet.

Hope you dont mind me saying, but all that went over my head at a very high altitude.

I wont knock you for- and I ask for forgiveness on this very bad pun- in tune with the technical stuff, but could you say all that again in laymans terms?

Some of the terms explained.
DVI
HDMI
VGA
4:2:2
HDTV

Whilst the terminology can be confusing for the non-technical person for someone who may have dabbled with the technology might be more familiar with them and they may be able offer some assistance or not as the case may be. But after further reading on-line I may once again have found the answer. Which is that as the resolutions aren't directly supported using the VGA socket on my TV ,I'd be better advised to use a HDMI connection .

An update.

I have the receiver and am using a DVI-HDMI cable which works very well.

Now weather permitting and if someone turns up with a triple extension ladder I should be able to complete the aerial changes here.

I should then have an Alsat 85cm dish motorized with a DarkGold 0.1db noise twin LNB. Then with the aid of a 2 -way Diseqc switch Should have at the end my Technomate TM5200D receiver fed off the small dish and driving it. I should have the Quali-TV HD receiver fed with the small dish and my 1.7M dish. And my Eagle receiver fed off the big dish.

The Quali-TV receiver certainly has some quirks but for 4:2:2 feeds it great.

Once the top mast with my 70cm Amateur radio beam has been taken off the rotator my Long Distance TV aerials will be fitted in it's place.
And the Sky dish I've taken off the mast at the back of the house will go half-way down the boiler chimney so my parents have satellite as well as Freeview.
