I think he's hilarious. Nicole is such a pain in the ass, I don't know why he's with her. He tries very hard to win her affection and she withholds it from him almost constantly, keeping him dangling. I think we can see who wears the trousers in that relationship, despite the way its being portrayed.
I really laughed when Rex said "there are some stupid people who like you" to Rachel

My late mother would have said that Rex was 'more to be pitied, than laughed at'.
He's with Nicole because he can be. She looks beautiful, and she is going out with him. He goes on and on about how he takes care of her financially, but gets nothing back. She's supposed to be his girlfriend - not his adopted child.
If he's sick of his role as provider, why does he stick with her? Is it because he's head over heels in love with her? I think it's more because Rex works very hard at being nice to himself, giving himself what he wants, because deep down, he doubts that there's anything that worthwhile about himself. He puts other people down, in the hope that this will make him look superior.
If he's that unhappy with Nicole, why doesn't he find someone else?
Maybe because he doubts that he could find someone who would stick around like Nicole has done? Maybe because he's scared sh1tless at the thought of a woman who might be self-assured, happy, independent, content with her life, not swayed by how many carats he has in his cufflinks? What could he give to a woman like that?
A woman, who would love someone, not for what they have or own, but for who they are, for how they look at life, and how they treat others. Possibly Rex wanted to believe that such 'girls' don't exist. After all, Rex knows about people, he's a man of the world, he understands how things work.
And then he met Rachel....
