The 64-year-old former political journalist is saved by the public week after week despite having two left feet.

On Saturday night he will perform his unique interpretation of the American Smooth on the BBC One show with partner Kristina Rihanoff.

Dr Sandra Wheatley, a social psychologist and author, said: "Each week the judges become increasingly frustrated by the public's decision to save John, and that makes us even more determined to vote for him. It's the 'buggeration factor' and it's a part of the British psyche - that feeling of 'I'll show you'. It's the same with X Factor - viewers like to inflict their opinions on Simon Cowell by voting against his wishes."

STRICTLY VOTING HAS BECOME VERY BRITISH

By Richard and Judy RICHARD SAYS: Will John Sergeant, the world’s worst dancer, be saved yet again this weekend by his defiant fans?

Half of me hopes so.

Yes, I know he should have been booted off Strictly Come Dancing weeks ago. His Cha Cha Cha last Saturday was truly dreadful – probably his worst performance yet.

But there he’ll be tonight, strutting smilingly in front of the cameras with his lovely partner Kristina Rihanoff to slaughter another routine. Talk about murder on the dancefloor.

Sergeant’s improbable survival is a revealing testament to our national bloody-mindedness. People aren’t voting to keep him in just because they like him and his dry humour. Something more subversive is going on.

They are tweaking the judges’ noses simply because they can.
