VETERAN broadcaster John Sergeant today quit Strictly Come Dancing.

------------ Image

The 64-year-old former political journalist announced he was pulling out of the contest as he had a "real chance" of winning, which would be a "joke too far".

The departure came after bookmakers branded Sergeant the "best-backed contestant" in the history of Strictly Come Dancing.

Democracy is denied as Sergeant quits

A few weeks ago John Sergeant was asked to reflect on the possibility of being chucked off Strictly Come Dancing. "It would be a defeat for democracy," replied the portly sage in sequins.

Too right. But now we hear that democracy has been denied and our hero is quitting. Goodness knows what has been going on. Knowing a bit about the BBC, having worked there for 19 years, I suspect machinations behind the scenes that would make a close encounter with the Borgias seem a picnic.

The arts of Terpsichore, ancient muse of dance, were pretty much a closed book to J Sergeant, agreed. But for sheer entertainment he can match PT Barnum and in ratlike political cunning he is the equal to Niccolo Machiavelli.

To defy week after week the threats of excommunication by the panel of po-faced judges he has stolen the best trick from the Obama election playbook. Like Obama, our resurrection man, our Lazarus of the dancefloor, got his pull through the internet via social networking sites such as Facebook.

This is the thing that the BBC and the quartet of judges, who now pout like a small shoal of beached porpoises, hadn't anticipated. After all the phone-in fiddling in the past by both ITV and the BBC, the programme bosses daren't risk being caught tampering with the phone vote tallies now – so they couldn't stop our John.

Poor John - he was damned if he stayed, and damned if he went, methinks.

Perhaps it might have been an idea to stay another week, and appeal to his adoring fans to desist from voting for him.

If the judges hadn't reacted so negatively to his early success with the public, he'd probably have left before now.

I expect the judges and other contestants are pleased, but it seems like a kick in the teeth for the public who voted for him.

John was the SCD 2008 patsy. The judges did not mind when they could ridicule and insult him every week but when the viewers decided to teach them a lesson by voting to keep him in the show they did like it very much.
I hope John wasn't too hurt by the comments aimed at him every week, I think he has played a blinder today. The judges and the critics of John are the ones with egg on their faces. ::lol::

John Sergeant should rejoin Strictly, say stars

Strictly's John Sergeant should rejoin the show immediately - that's according to Hollywood superstar Steve Guttenberg, a contestant earlier this year on the US version of the show, Dancing With The Stars.

Shame he's gone.
It's the same with any of these reality shows the best certainty doesn't always win. More times than not it's a popularity contest and unless you taike the public out of it, it'll always be like that.

A paunchy old bloke who made TV worth watching

THE BIG question of the week? Did John Sergeant jump, was he pushed or did he just trip over his two left feet? The next big question: why do we care?

For those of you who cancelled your telly licence after the last BBC farce, let me briefly explain the ins and outs of Waltzergate.

The hoo-ha centres on a celebrity ballroom dancing show, a retired journalist, a panel of snooty judges and the Great British Public.

It turns out that when Sergeant took the floor of Strictly Come Dancing to dance it out with a bunch of other younger, slimmer, more glamorous, less baldy celebs to clinch the title, the producers were rather wrong-footed.

You see the GBP rather liked old John, despite his obvious lack of dancing talent. Despite a weekly slagging from the judges, who marked him last for three weeks running, the "dancing pig in Cuban heels" was always saved from the deciding dance-off by the public vote. Indeed, the nastier the judges, the more popular the porcine prancer became.

What was the harm in that, one wonders. This is entertainment, after all. The sequined hero had won the hearts of the nation. The public had spoken. Sergeant might have dragged his partner Kristina Rihanoff across the dancefloor like a sack of tatties, but in the eyes of the viewers, he was a winner.

Ovation as Sergeant leaves Strictly

People's favourite John Sergeant bowed out of Strictly Come Dancing to huge cheers and a standing ovation from the TV audience - while the judges remained firmly seated.

The former journalist, who sparked ire among the panel with his massive popularity despite terrible dancing, wryly thanked the judges for the way they "whipped up public support" in his favour.
