Kerry Katona narrowly avoided bankruptcy yesterday as she was given a last chance to pay her tax bill.

The former Atomic Kitten star has an extra six weeks to find the £157,000 outstanding amount on a debt of £417,000.

Luke Harris QC, representing the 27-year-old mum of four, said she had not yet paid in full because of "changed circumstances".

He said Kerry, who did not attend the High Court hearing in London, was expecting pay of £472,000 by August.


Mr Harris added: "She is seeking to remortgage her properties. But if the money comes there is no need."

Henderson Collymore, representing HM Revenue & Customs, said his instructions were to seek a bankruptcy order.

But Deputy Registrar Middleton agreed to extend the deadline to August 7. He rejected a bid by the star to hear the case in secret.

Former pop star and I'm A Celebrity contestant Kerry Katona has been declared bankrupt after failing to settle a tax bill.

The former Atomic Kitten singer, 27, managed to reduce her £417,000 tax bill to £82,000, but HM Revenue and Customs pressed ahead with the bankruptcy petition first issued in January.

Katona, who was not at the High Court, asked for more time to come up with the shortfall, via her representative Luke Harris.

Harris asked the registrar to put the matter back, saying funds were available but cheques had not been cleared.

A fortnight ago Katona, who is a columnist with OK! magazine and has been the 'face' of Iceland supermarkets for many years, was given until today to find the sum by the registrar in a case that had been before the court four times.

But when the funds didn't appear, Mr Registrar Nicholls agreed to make the bankruptcy order.

PALS URGE KERRY TO DUMP HUBBY


BANKRUPT star Kerry Katona’s marriage is on the rocks – as friends urge her to dump cabbie husband Mark Croft.

And close pals now reckon the pair’s 18 months as man and wife will soon end in tears.

They say the couple – regularly seen bickering and arguing on Kerry’s fly-on-the-wall documentary TV show – are “just not meant for each other”.

And after Kerry, 27, was made bankrupt following a string of big-money splurges on hubby Mark, they are telling her to get out.

One friend said: “You only have to spend a bit of time with them to know they are not good for each other.

“I really don’t believe that Mark makes Kerry happy.

“She’s been told she should dump him and get away for her own sake. It looks like it won’t be long now.”

Last week mum-of-four Kerry’s problems worsened when she was finally declared bankrupt at the High Court in London.

The former I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! jungle babe went bust after failing to pay £82,000 to the taxman.

She is hoping the ruling will be overturned when she pays the bill this week.

But friends say that it should never have happened – and Kerry needs to stop splashing out on £90,000 Range Rovers, £55,000 Porsches and £12,000 motorbikes for Mark.

“Before Kerry met Mark she didn’t use to splurge cash like she does now,” said a pal. “She’s bought him fast cars and bikes.

“The marriage to Mark certainly hasn’t done her any favours.”

The pair married at Gretna Green on Valentine’s Day last year – after less than two years together.

But the relationship has been dogged by claims of Mark cheating – which he has always denied.

Six weeks ago, though, relations between the pair reached an all-time low when Mark, 37, walked out on Kerry – taking daughter Heidi, two, and baby Max, four months, with him.

He later returned to the family’s luxury £1.5million home in Wilmslow, Cheshire, but pals say the couple’s relationship is “constantly strained”.

On Kerry’s MTV One show, Crazy In Love, the pair were regularly shown rowing.

A friend said: “If that’s what Kerry wants, then fair enough. But the truth is that many of her closest friends don’t think that she is happy any more.

“We really think it could be just a matter of months before it all ends in tears.”
