Madeleine McCann hunt: Police spent more than £500,000

British police spent more than half a million pounds assisting the Portuguese investigation into Madeleine McCann's disappearance, it was revealed today.

Leicestershire Police's part in the search for the missing little girl cost £548,477 in 2007-08, the force said.

But it was reimbursed for most of this amount thanks to a Home Office grant of £525,069.

Debate on Madeleine coverage

Kate and Gerry McCann's spokesman is to speak out about whether media coverage helped or hindered the search for their missing daughter Madeleine.

Clarence Mitchell is to address the Oxford Union ahead of an appearance with Mr McCann next week before MPs on how the media reported the matter.

Their evidence will form part of a Commons committee's inquiry into press standards, privacy and libel.

Murat 'scarred' by media

A man named as a suspect by police in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann says he will be "scarred forever" as a result of "lies" printed by tabloids.

Robert Murat was listed as an "official suspect" in the hunt for three-year-old Madeleine, who disappeared while on holiday in Portugal in May 2007.

The former property developer, in his mid-30s, criticised British newspapers during a Cambridge University debate.

McCann attacks 'sensationalist' media

The media was much more interested in reporting the "Kate and Gerry show" than the search for their missing daughter, Mr McCann has said.

Madeleine McCann's father was invited to answer questions from members of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee as part of an ongoing inquiry into press standards, privacy and libel.
