TV Review: The Apprentice, BBC1, 25/03

We’re the best there is, ever was, and ever will be. In fact, we’re the Jesus of business and we’d kill every child ever used on a Huggies or Andrex advert to win, the cuter the deader.

That’s right, The Apprentice is back! Just in time too, as we need something to fill in the time between series of Dancing on Ice.

If you’ve ever watched this humility free reality show before then basically you’ve seen them all. There’s a bunch of contestants who are dead behind the eyes, all vying for a job at Sir Alan Sugar’s workhouse.

The Apprentice
BBC1, Wednesday 15 April 9:00pm - 10:00pm

This is bad. I'm getting tingles when that stomping Prokofiev music over the introduction starts. I'm starting to root quite fiercely for some candidates and hate others. (I won't say who, obviously, or you'll know they weren't fired last week.) It's those little telltale signs that the series is sinking its merciless teeth into you. Again. On tonight's programme, the prime candidate for national hate-figure status pulls out all the stops of his/her annoyingness. It's quite a sight - and a red rag to Sir Alan. But first there's an enjoyably flunked task involving bath and beauty products to get through. Empire manage to concoct theirs using an ingredient that costs 1,200 pounds a kilo, but then it's not as if Sir Alan ever goes on about keeping costs down, is it? Ignite, meanwhile, make a soap that is literally dripping with honey ("It's slightly soft at the back but only because it's so fresh"). It's another gem of a programme - enthrallingly dramatic and at times very, very funny.
