I think Parky was making a point about the ridiculous nature of 'celebrity' these days.

Yes, Jade Goody's tragic death from cervical cancer will publicise the fact that unaware women will take reminders for smear tests more seriously, but that wasn't the reason at the outset. Jade Goody's association with Max Clifford was about promoting herself as a 'celebrity.'

I said it on this forum before that Davina McCall was on Parky & doing her cringe-worthy John Noel Management thing, begging Michael Parkinson to get Jade Goody on as a guest - you should have seen the look on Parky's face!

Parkinson criticises national fixation with 'paltry' Goody

There is some hypocrisy because Parky interviewed many a successful celebrity with dubious private lives & promotion.
But he was making a point about the ridiculous hype Jade Goody - & it was.
Didn't watch the funeral because I was away & obviously Michael Parkinsons interview was before, but Sky obviously tried to equate Jade Goody with Princess Diana, something the populist Murdoch group tried to do as well.
It goes without saying that Richard Desmond's Daily Star group are trying to do the same for their paper, The Daily Star & sister magazines.

I think Mac Clifford was/is behind the whole hype and the Richard Desmond's Daily Star group was happy to buy into it for the celeb hungry readers they get. Parky never mentioned how the so called posh hacks earned money out of her death.

They all had to build her up into some sort of deserving type to justify writing about her, I mean they could not write her new husband was tagged and waiting to be charged with another offence, if it was ever mentioned it was skipped over, or write how Jade bullied her way through school and her reality TV appearances.
They are all hypocrits who should thank their lucky stars people are too busy to bring them to task.

Jade Goody Defended By Bishop

The bishop who presided over Jade Goody's wedding has leapt to the late reality TV star's defence after Sir Michael Parkinson claimed that she came to represent "all that is wretched about Britain".

Bishop Jonathan Blake, of the Open Episcopal Church, admonished the 74-year-old broadcaster for putting the "boot in to a young woman so recently buried".

Parkinson described Goody in a Radio Times article as "barely educated, ignorant and puerile".

He wrote: "When we clear the media smokescreen from around her death, what we're left with is a woman who came to represent all that's paltry and wretched about Britain today."

In a retort on his blog, Bishop Blake argued that Goody, who died of cervical cancer at the age of 27, had risen from humble beginnings to achieve an "immense amount" in her short life.

This, he said, was due to "her inherent gifts and untutored intelligence".

He went on: "Jade Goody has her own place in the history of television and, while it's significant, it's nothing to be proud of.

"Her death is as sad as the death of any young person, but it's not the passing of a martyr or a saint or, God help us, Princess Di."

Yeah, decent people with concern were really sad that Jade's cervical cancer was ultimately terminal, but preventable. Horrific to even thank about it.
I was going to mention a few things as a postscript to this tagedy in the future - but the hype from Murdoch's group & Desmond's regarding Jade Goody continues. Er, the poor girl is in her grave.

Jade Goody was a coward on BB3/CBB5 - that's why the media who attacked her then but promote her now are hypocrites for what they say.
Yes, Jade Goody had a terrible life with her parents, but that amongst all things was the reason why she looked so bad trying to bully other people on Big Brother.
NB: she never tried to bully Kate Lawler.

Look, I like Parky, but his ill-timed, insensitive remarks about Jade Goody just days after she'd been laid to rest really take the biscuit.

After remarking on her tough upbringing, he said that Jade represents "all that is paltry and wretched" in Britain today.

That's rich coming from someone who made a mint doing one programme a week for years.

That represents all that's very fortunate, privileged and over-paid about Michael Parkinson..
