Yesterday (Thursday) I completed part one of my science computer upgrades.
My Dual-Core PC which is over clocked at 3.01GHz per core now has greater air flow thanks to the two 110CFM fans and the 87CFM fan over the card slots.
Also it's now running a NVidia GTS250 based graphics card who's graphics processors is being used by the SETI project to do some serious number crunching.
This greatly reduces the load on the main system CPU so I've re-enabled the Einstein project.
End result the work units on SETI now complete in 18 minutes compaired to 4+ hours and 4 minutes for the 1+ hours units.

The Milkyway project has been moved to the Intel Server and the work units are completing 10 minutes quicker. The plan is to install an ATI HD3850 AGP graphics card when money allows as using the Graphics processor on this card with this project will further reduce the time from 38 Minutes to 9 seconds per work unit.

I'm still waiting for the Scythe Mugen 2 Heatsink and fan to arrive for the dual-core which'll further reduce the running temperature. It's a bit of a monster but I want the load temperatures down as low as possible and this should make a big improvement over the stock cooling.

As a foot note to the last the Nvidia GPU is processing around 11 times faster than the 3.6GHz Xeons.

And that PC/Server is going to get stripped and rebuilt with the same parts as the current Dual-Core which'll reduce running costs and reduce the temperature at.
So I'll have an Intel server board with some very fast Xeons etc surplus very soon.

Today I went for the first long bike ride of the year.
Distance was just under 14 miles.
I know now that I need to lubricate a few bits on the bike as it kept sticking in the middle gear set which makes it very hard work going up hills. And it made the chain jump off once.
Need to do a few more like this as it's only about 3 weeks before the Waendel weekend (8th - 10th May). The long skating sessions seem to be helping build up my legs as I noticed a big difference since the last ride.

Today I've been trying to restore my mail rules after changing the motherboard / CPU in the PC that monitors the Email.
But although I have a back-up of the registry settings for the rules it won't let me merge them as XP says it can't access the registry ! RegEdit manages OK but again I can't import the old settings ! Looks like I've got the recreate the 34 rules again.

Well that's computers for you.

Last night I completed the upgrades to one of my science PCs.
As you can see from the pictures the cooler was a very tight fit in the case. I had to remove the Power Supply and move the DVD drive before I could get the motherboard back in the case.
The results are good. Running at 96% CPU the cores are now in the low 40's C and idling it low 30's C. The GPU whilst crunching runs at 60C and ides around 40C.
ImageImage

The cooler in almost a 4 inch cube with a 4inch fan blowing through the metal work. This is also almost in-line with the 110 CFM rear case fan. The case also has a 4inch 110 CFM from fan and a side 4 inch 87 CFM fan. This produces a cold air-flow from the rear of the case and from the left-hand side vents.

It's also ott but it runs almost flat out 24h and the room temperature does tend to be on the warm side especially as the weather warms up.

Clicking the pictures gets you the larger image.

Last night I did another 2 hours skating session.
I really must get used to pushing off the pik when I try to jump as it helps to generate power and height plus if I then use my arms at the same time to help with the start of the rotation plus an ,almost ,up kick motion from the free leg ,in the direction of rotation ,I might one day make a full rotation.

Today I repeated the cycle route I did last weekend. Added to that about 26 miles during the week and I'd say the training is going well.

Today I passed the milage total that I did all last year on this bike. I've now done more than 70 miles so far this year and the event is still 2 weeks away.
I also discovered just how well the waterproofs worked tonight on the way how even in some fairly heavy rain.
Disc brakes certainly work a lot better than the traditional brakes.

Not too sure how much grip the tyres offer in the wet but there were certainly throwing enough water up off the road.

Today I passed the 100 Mile marker for this year.
Looking at the forecast it looks like it'll be windy for Saturday's event so rather than take the easy option I've been out getting used to the higher wind speeds.

Later after eating I'm going to check the saddle height to see just how close I am to the correct setting. According to one cycling site the formula is 0.885 x inside leg to get the correct height and has been used in competition for many years so I'll be interesting to see how far off the figure I am.

Today I battled the winds into work which weren't a lot of fun but was uneventful apart from the end when the bike wouldn't change down from the middle gearset to the lower set. It's my own fault for trying to set them up last night ! So in a while I'll have another try and failing that someone at work who knows what to do will set them up tomorrow.
The return trip was much easier ,I even went over 30MPH for the first time in more than 20 years but that was wind assisted. At least this time I had brakes that might have stopped me.

Well done to your brother.

I too have lost5 stone since last October but have had to stop due to circumstances out of my control. Still need to lose some more so hopeful once things get back to normal I can get to my ideal weight :D

Today I treated myself to a new mobile {@}

Today as a result of a number of burglaries in this area I spent a few hours securing the front door which would have been the easiest choice for someone wanting to gain access. This I'd discovered a couple of years ago when I'd locked myself out with no key-holder within 100Miles. It had surprised me just how easy it had been to open the door.

Today I repositioned one bolt so it could be used and fitted a third one.
I then fitted a second lock ,a 5 lever dead lock.
I also added plywood to cover the glass surrounding the original lock area so it couldn't the manually unlocked if the glass was broken and added plywood over the panel at the bottom of the door so if it had been kicked in you they couldn't get through.
There's 2 tall narrow panes of glass that'll get covered so again the locks can't be got at by breaking the glass.

There has been at least 4 burglaries in as many days with one being very close by. The CCTV might put some off ,it certainly works with sales people.
But for the rest I'll make it a difficult as possible for them to get in. Nobody can get in the drive without being caught on CCTV and the Garden is covered during the daylight hours though anybody with a touch will instantly show up the rest of the time. A couple of the cameras need replacing but they still give pictures through part of the day.

Sounds as though you should be okay now Larry ()^

This morning, I opened the curtains to see 2 baby starlings being fed by their mother on our lawn. It was really cute. I have since seen 2 more babies being fed. It is such a lovely sight.
