However witheringly unpleasant Sir Alan Sugar can be, he has friends who are worse. Every year at about this time he invites these "trusted associates" round for a game of clay-pigeon shooting, using the remaining Apprentice candidates as pigeons and their CVs as ammunition. It's a grand day out for everyone. Well, maybe not the pigeons, who can be seen shattering on impact in the most satisfying way. "I'm gonna be absolutely brilliant in every single area," announces one of the five hopefuls left in this interview round, the penultimate of the contest. But that's before she meets Sir Alan's mate Claude Littner, "a multimillionaire with a reputation for ruthlessness" (as I'm sure it says on his business card). He reduces her to stuttering incoherence with a display of rudeness that could strip wallpaper. He asks another interviewee sweetly, "I wonder whether you're a bit delusional?" It's a great spectator sport. The absence of the usual business task ought to be a drawback, but instead we zoom in on every micro-flaw in the candidates' psyches. Tonight's boardroom session is unlike any other I can remember. About the last thing you expect The Apprentice to be is touching, but perhaps Sir Alan and his wannabes have very slightly softer centres than we realised.

Alan Sugar's lieutenant 'fired' from The Apprentice as £500m property empire collapses

A tough-talking interrogator on The Apprentice has been replaced as his property empire collapsed into administration.
Paul Kemsley, who terrified contestants with his fearsome grillings on the previous four seasons of the reality TV show, was approached for the filming of last night's semi-finals episode 'but he wasn't available due to other commitments', the BBC said.

His replacement on Sir Alan Sugar's show by new interrogator Alan Watts comes days after the £500million company Mr Kemsley founded in 1995 finally ran into the ground.
