With TV judges becoming so harsh (on Great British Menu even the finalists' food was treated with distaste), the celebs queuing up to enter the MasterChef kitchen must be quaking. But there's no chance of John Torode and Gregg Wallace yelling "THIS COULD CHANGE THEIR LIVES!" at journalist Rosie Boycott, Hotel Babylon's Michael Obiora or DJ Joel Ross (in the first of tonight's two heats), because it clearly won't. Unless one of them has always dreamt of running their own restaurant. In fact, Torode and Wallace are as nice as pie to the contestants, who later in the series include a handful of "comeback" cooks from previous series. As before, the celebs must each invent two dishes from a mystery box of ingredients; work a lunch service at a top restaurant; and then cook a two-course meal of their own devising. After a month of slicing and dicing, simmering and sauteeing, we'll know who's worthy of the title Celebrity Masterchef 2009. Continues tomorrow at 8:00pm.

CELEBRITY MASTERCHEF

YES, it’s not just a new series of MasterChef – which would obviously be exciting enough in its own right – but a new series of the celebrity version.

And going head-to-head in this opening show are Rosie Boycott, Jan Leeming, Jayne Middlemiss, Michael Obiora, Joel Ross and Joe Swift.

Best of all, though, is that hosts John Torode and Greg Wallace remain on top form when it comes to those needlessly shouty conversations they like to have with one another, right from the opening titles.

“THESE CELEBRITIES ARE ALL PASSIONATE ABOUT FOOD!” Gregg yells to John, even though he’s standing right next to him.

“WE’RE LOOKING FOR THAT EXCEPTIONAL COOKING STYLE,” John yells back, as if Gregg’s not only stone deaf but can’t even remember why they’re there.
