Big Brother has ‘jumped the shark’

There is a common phrase among geeks, myself included, for when a once-popular TV show is past its best – we say it has “jumped the shark”, writes Dan Wainwright.

The phrase originates from a latter episode of Happy Days when the Fonz, wearing shorts and his leather jacket, jumped on a jet ski over a shark for some inexplicable reason that was nothing to do with teaching Richie Cunningham to be cool or shouting “Eyyyyyyy”.

It is now applied to situations where the writers or executives of a show, in a bid to boost flagging ratings, do something so completely out of character as to spoil the enjoyment of the programme for the rest of its run.

Big Brother has not jumped the shark. Sadly it did not even get the honour of doing something outlandish enough to be classed as having gone “too far”.

Top choice from this piece:
The fact that Carphone Warehouse pulled its sponsorship leaving BB to be supported by Lucozade does a lot to conjure the image that people are no longer texting each other to find out what they think but are instead only watching it if they are sick, in bed, glugging glucose drinks because there really is nothing else on.

Spot on Dan, thank you!
(OG adds more Lucozade to his shopping list, found special offer of 8 bottle pack for £3 locally!)

Does anyone care about Big Brother relationships anymore?

Once again, the tabloids are awash with news of another Big Brother snogfest. This time around it's busty ladyperson Sophie and pretty young man Kris, getting it on while sunbathing and having a tickle underneath the covers. But did they do it? You know, like, really do it? Phwoar, I hope they did. That'd be brilliant. Wouldn't it? Nah, the questions we should be asking is, nowadays, who cares?

Bazalgette keeps schtum

Former Endemol grand fromage Peter Bazalgette was on BBC Radio 4's Today to talk about the BBC licence fee and all things Digital Britain. But just as he was about to exit stage left - ambush!

Presenter Evan Davis thought he'd ask him about Big Brother. "Peter, you had a big part in bringing Big Brother to the world. Are you watching it this year?"

Baz was having none of it. "Do you know, since I left Endemol two years ago I have had this glorious holiday of never having to comment on Big Brother whatsoever. This morning is another case in point."

So Davis had another go. "Do you know anyone who is watching Big Brother this year?"

Baz stuck to his guns. "I said I'm not commenting."

Rough translation: "I really can't get enough of Big Brother and I'm gutted they are not showing it on the live feed on E4, Evan." Or: "Is it still going?"

BBC Today audio - the interview is tagged at 0834

Day 13 - Unlucky for...?

Well, I put that headline on this thread almost 12 hours ago, since then we've had almost nothing worth mentioning from the house, the C4 website has not woken up yet, and the media is full of doom and gloom about the show.

So, I guess Day 13 is unlucky for the producers and all the team at Endemol, nobody seems to want to carry on watching - I have been struggling to keep my own interest going and todays 'news' does not help.

Bouncy Fun

Apparently someone got out of the wrong side of their Big Brother bed this morning. Noirin has been having a good old whinge in the Kitchen.

"Alreet Noirin?" said Charlie cheerfully.

"Yeah... I just thought it was gonna be so much more fun in here," sulked Noirin. "We're all over 18 but they're treating us like kids. Do you not think it's sh*te?"
(Oh gosh, even the HM's are saying it now!)

...

They've got to have a Gay Pride Day!" added Charlie.

Is BB's Sree sweet or sleazy? YOU decide!

Sree is fast becoming the most talked-about Big Brother housemate of this series. If he's not making girls cry then hugging them, then he's pontificating like a wise old guru in the Diary Room, fighting with Cairon, or even getting his little bum out in the pool.

Hunger Pains

We're almost two weeks into Big Brother 10, and surprise surprise: there's a scrap brewing over food supplies.

Last week Sophia was caught talking about nominations, and as a result Big Brother doubled the price of everything on the shopping list. The result? Not much food, and very hungry housemates. Lisa has been leading a full-scale bitching session in the Garden.

"People talking about nominations ****** us up," grumbled Kris. "We did that Task for nothing in the end."

Ole Bamboo

For this week's Shopping Task, the housemates must learn and perform a dance routine to the song ‘Ole Bamboo' from the stage show Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Cairon went to the Diary Room to collect the instructions which he read out to the housemates. Quite a few pages of instructions later, the housemates knew what had to be done.

Nobody has noticed that BB substituted a cardboard cut-out for Rodrigo yesterday and he's now back in Sau Paulo, having a laugh about BB10

Several HM's in the house, as Halfwit makes an omelette using a box of broken eggs. Dogface would like to see more than Freddies runny eggs, and says as much...

Well, at least we can be clear now on who is the bitch in the relationship :D
-

But yes, last night was a truly lousy one for the show. It had been nominations day, and the first bit of live feed appears after 1am, and they were already asleep.

Grade A* lame. None of it surprises me though, after all, they are the same fools who have failed time and time again.

The real Half Wit - ANA George Lamb, has just said on BBLB "Who needs a live feed when you have BBLB" Honest to god this is getting more tiresome. They had a bucnh of kids on giving their opinion on the housemates, they kids were no more then 10-years-old, now what are they doing up at 10pm watching BB?
