Girl dies after getting swine flu

A girl, thought to be six years old, has died at Birmingham Children's Hospital after contracting swine flu.

NHS West Midlands said the girl, who had other serious health conditions, died on Friday evening. It is not known if flu contributed to her death.

Swine flu fears close high school

A high school in Suffolk with 945 students is to close for more than a week after a confirmed case of swine flu and several suspected cases.

St Albans Roman Catholic High School in Ipswich has decided to close the school until Tuesday, 7 July.

The confirmed case is a member of staff and a number of pupils and staff were tested after they displayed symptoms.

Wimbledon staff have flu symptoms

Four ball boys and girls at the Wimbledon tennis championships have shown symptoms of swine flu.

The All England Club, which organises the competition, confirmed that some staff were showing flu symptoms. They were told to stay at home.

But spokesman Henry O'Grady said no cases were confirmed as swine flu, adding: "They haven't been tested for swine flu and they're not going to be."

People with flu symptoms were asked not to visit Wimbledon as spectators.

The All England Club did not confirm the age or gender of those affected.

Resistant flu strain

THE swine flu virus has mutated in Denmark, rendering the most common treatment, Tamiflu, ineffective in one case.

The new resistant strain could continue to spread just as easily as the original virus, leaving fewer treatment options before a vaccine was developed, experts said yesterday.

Swine flu hits Romania trip pupils

Eight British schoolchildren have been taken to hospital in Romania with swine flu.

A British Embassy spokeswoman said the group arrived on June 25 as part of an annual exchange programme to work with disabled children in the north-east city of Iasi.

The pupils, aged 16 to 18, are part of a group of 19 and three teachers from the private Sevenoaks School in Kent.
