Former Solidarity MSP Tommy Sheridan and his wife Gail have pleaded not guilty to charges of perjury.

The couple lodged the pleas during a preliminary hearing at the High Court in Edinburgh.

The charges relate to evidence during Mr Sheridan's defamation victory over the News of the World in 2006 following publication of sex and drugs claims.

The couple, who are both aged 45, were charged with perjury in December 2007 following an investigation by police.

The case will be heard in January next year at the High Court in Glasgow, and could be the longest perjury trial in Scottish legal history, with a prosecution witness list currently extending to more than 180 names.

The former Socialist MSP and his wife Gail will go on trial in January accused of lying on oath following the politician’s defamation case against a Sunday newspaper.

The Solidarity leader was to be represented by Donald Findlay QC, who has worked on some of Scotland’s most high profile legal cases.

However, with less than four months to go before the trial, the one-time Big Brother contestant has instead hired Margaret Scott QC, who acted for Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset al-Megrahi during his appeal case.

Former Socialist MSP Tommy Sheridan and his wife Gail have appeared in court on perjury charges.

The couple, both aged 45, are accused of lying on oath in connection with the ex-MSP’s successful 2006 defamation action against the News of the World.

Sheridan, a former contestant in Celebrity Big Brother, won £200,000 in damages after the Sunday newspaper printed allegations about his private life.

A date has not yet been fixed for the trial, which is expected to become the longest perjury case in Scottish legal history.
