52 British schoolchildren held in Beijing hotel after four test positive for swine flu

A party of 52 British schoolchildren and their teachers have been quarantined in during a trip to China after four of the pupils tested positive for swine flu.
The pupils and teachers are being held by Chinese authorities in a four-star hotel in Beijing.
The four pupils who fell ill are being treated in a hospital in the city and all are said to be in a stable condition.

Three of the four were found to have a high temperature when they arrived in the Chinese capital earlier this week.

Four of the 15-year-old pupils are girls from Cheltenham Ladies' College.

Airlines will ban swine flu suspects

BRITISH holidaymakers suspected of suffering from swine flu are being stopped from boarding flights.

Check-in staff at Heathrow and other main British airports are vetting passengers for possible symptoms and turning away those suspected of being infected. Some countries, including Thailand, Egypt and China have installed thermal body scanners to identify passengers with fever.

Don't be silly Christine, think of their 'human rights'.

A lot of the arrivals are riddled with diseases, that is why they arrive here

Wales opting out of flu service

Wales will not be part of the National Pandemic Flu Service (NPFS) when it is launched in England next week, says Health Minister Edwina Hart.

Swine flu deaths doubled in England in the last week, and the service will relieve pressures on hospitals and GPs.

The minister said Wales is "well behind the curve compared to areas of England" for the number of swine flu cases.

Swine flu: 100,000 cases in one week

As the government launches its emergency swine flu website, the Health Protect Agency announces that there were an estimated 100,000 cases of swine flu in Britain last week.

The estimate is almost double the total for the previous week.

The Department for Health says there are now 840 people in hospital with the virus, 63 of them in intensive care.

To take some of the pressure off the health service, the government's has launched a new phone hotline and website, giving people access to drugs without having to see a GP.

But it is already been struggling to cope, with more than nine million hits an hour.

The government's national flu pandemic service, which can be accessed using the telephone and internet, will be staffed by more than 1,500 people.
