I would guess that it's nigh-on impossible to keep up an act in that house (and I fully believe that Kenneth acts every single day, sadly).
It's not the same in any way as the outside world. You're on display all the time, every small conversation or action is magnified to the nth degree. I would guess too that you can't get away from yourself - as with a 'retreat' or something similar, all your inner stuff is there, needing to be dealt with, but where do you do that? And on top of that you have to relate to people who may well be very different to your friends and family.
I'm not writing this in defence of Kenneth - I just think that it didn't take much for his act to splinter into pieces. Sad really.
