Swine flu tests after girl dies

Tests have been carried out to discover whether swine flu was a contributory factor in the death of a nine-year-old girl from West Sussex.

The girl, a Year 5 pupil at Three Bridges Junior School in Crawley, died on Sunday at East Surrey Hospital.

It is unclear whether the girl, who has not been named, had underlying health problems. Results from a post-mortem examination are expected this week.

Swine flu cases double in a week

The estimated number of new swine flu cases has almost doubled in the last seven days.

The overall number of deaths in the UK has risen to 128, with 93 deaths recorded in England, 21 in Scotland, eight in Northern Ireland and six in Wales.

But Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson said he was most worried by the number of hospital cases, which have risen in England to 506, with 99 in critical care.

The number in critical care is the highest since the pandemic began.

Sir Liam said: "We don't understand why this has happened. It looks as if the virus is having a different impact in the flu season than it had in the summer."

He said he was concerned by the high proportion of deaths in younger age groups, describing it as a "very unusual pattern for flu".

More than half (54 per cent) of H1N1 deaths have been in the under-45 age group, in contrast with normal seasonal flu which is more dangerous for the over-65s.

One in three deaths related to people who had little or no underlying health problems.

Rise in number of swine flu cases

There were an estimated 78,000 new cases of swine flu in England in the past week, figures have showed.

This is up from 53,000 in the week before but falls short of the 100,000 cases at the peak of swine flu in July.

There are currently 751 people in hospital with the virus, of which 157 are in intensive care.

The number of swine flu deaths in England now stands at 97.

High risk groups should receive flu jab by mid-December

People at high risk from swine flu will hopefully receive their vaccinations by mid-December, the Government said today.

Those with conditions such as heart disease, cancer, asthma and diabetes are first in line for the jabs, alongside pregnant women and frontline NHS staff.

Boxes of GlaxoSmithKline's vaccine have begun arriving in GP surgeries this week, although the Government admits very few will have received them yet.

Beware of swine flu swindles

Fretting about getting swine flu? Would you try a product called Silver Shampoo? Or Four Thieves sanitizing spray?

The FDA warns that if it’s too good to be true, forget about it.

A crush of Internet vendors are cashing in on swine flu fears and preying on unwitting customers. And the goods they’re hawking — from herbal teas to body washes to inhalers — could hurt more than your wallet, officials said yesterday.
