The Day of the Triffids BBC1, 1/2 Monday 28 December 9:00pm - 10:30pm John Wyndham's apocalyptic 1951 sci-fi classic is given a contemporary overhaul, complete with eco-message, for this star-packed adaptation. Writer Patrick Harbinson has reinvented the Triffids as a future source of oil to replace fossil fuels. But they are vicious plant-beasts that have begun to evolve on their own. One night the world's population is blinded by a celestial light-show, leaving the path free for the Triffids to inherit the Earth. Though the final version of this two-parter was being polished as we went to press (ending tomorrow), a sneak peek reveals a drama that looks pacey and exciting, with some super special effects. Dougray Scott, as the human resistance leader, is an appropriately tough and manly hero, and he leads a cast of big names, including Brian Cox, Vanessa Redgrave and Eddie Izzard as an absolute rotter.
