Britain's newest sporting heroine - Winter Olympic Gold medallist Amy Williams - has spoken of her long battle just to qualify for this year's games.

Williams, 27, ended the UK's 30-year wait for a solo Winter Olympic gold medal after sliding her way to glory in the skeleton bob.

She was driven to success by fear of failure after not being chosen to appear at the games four years ago.

But the 27-year-old from Bath, riding on her trusted sled which she nicknamed Arthur, was more than half a second quicker than the rest of the field at the Vancouver games after the fourth and final heat.

She is Britain's first individual gold medallist at the Winter Olympics since ice skate legend Robin Cousins, who triumphed at Lake Placid in 1980.

Williams, nicknamed "curly wurly" because of her frizzy hair, watched the last Winter Olympics from the commentary box.

She said she had sacrificed everything over the last four years to make sure she appeared at the games.

She told BBC Radio 5: "From sitting here four years ago I've just worked really hard.

"I've done everything possible in my physical training, mental training, everything with my coaches, runners, every single, possible thing, my health, my diet.

"Every decision I made was is this going to help me go to the Olympics or is it not."
