Eurovision: Your Country Needs You
BBC1, Friday 12 March 8:30pm - 10:00pm Since we didn't end up with nul points in last year's Eurovision Song Contest, thanks to King of the Musical Andrew Lloyd Webber, it's just conceivable that this time, with King of Pop Pete Waterman calling the shots, we might do even better. Not win it, of course (tactical voting will put paid to that), but at least make a respectable showing. First, we have to choose who will represent us in Oslo, and tonight Graham Norton introduces the shortlist of six, who will perform live. The judging panel get to whittle them down to three. And that's where we the public come in, to vote for who we want to warble the Pete Waterman/Mike Stock composition come May. Reminding us of former glories will be clips from the Eurovision archives and, to set the standard, performances by the 2009 winner, Alexander Rybak of Norway, and the Sugababes (with last year's UK hopeful Jade Ewen in the line-up). Condensing the selection process to just a single show seems sensible - as much as we love Eurovision, it's more of a one-night stand than a lasting relationship.
