I'm in a Rock 'n' Roll Band! 1/6 - The Singer
BBC2, Saturday 01 May 9:40pm - 10:40pm
This pop-cultural romp opens with the brilliant sound of Roger Daltrey's ear-rattling yell from the start of The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again. It's a great start to a celebration of lead singers in all their pomp and madness, though when we meet today's Daltrey he comes across, amusingly, as less mike-swinging demi-god than droning Steve Coogan character. The idea of the series is to look at each role in the classic rock band, then use a public vote to convene a fantasy supergroup from the winners in each category. It makes for a rollicking programme, with dozens of diamond-cut archive clips - from a flailing Ian Curtis to an acid-drenched Jim Morrison - and splendid reminiscences from pop's great and good on the jealousies that frontmen (and women) provoke. In the end, several tell us, it's all down to LSD: Lead Singer's Disease.
