England World Cup Figures

England's World Cup match against Algeria drew the biggest viewing audience for any programme so far in 2010, according to reports.

Reports indicate the audience peaked at 21.3m viewers for the crucial game on Friday evening which ended in a 0-0 draw.

That gave ITV a 70 per cent share of the entire viewing audience at that time, with an average figure of around 19m for the duration of the match.

However it failed to top the 23.9m who tuned in to ITV's coverage of England's match against Portugal in the quarter finals of the 2004 European Championships.

ITV has been praised for its coverage of Friday's match, following its mishap during England's game against the USA last Saturday which spawned nearly 6,000 complaints from irate viewers.

Those watching in HD missed the team's early goal against the USA after coverage cut to an advert instead. Viewers watching the non-HD coverage were unaffected.

ITV later apologised to viewers, blaming the glitch on "human error".

England's next World Cup match will be against Slovenia on Wednesday, and will be a crucial game in determining whether or not they qualify for the next round.
