How Scots fared on Big Brother

AN APPEARANCE in Big Brother has paved the way to a new career for some contestants.

But Scots have had mixed fortunes after featuring in the programme. Some have met with success, some have faded into obscurity, while others have struggled to live it down.

Good-natured Orcadian Cameron Stout won the series in 2003 and has maintained a media presence ever since, with newspaper columns, television slots and appearances in panto

Another Scots winner was John Loughton - the student politician who won Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack in 2008. He stood as the Liberal Democrat candidate in East Kilbride in the 2010 General Election.

Loughton fared better than George Galloway and Tommy Sheridan, who appeared in Celebrity Big Brother in 2006 and 2009 respectively. Sheridan failed to make much impact, while Galloway has surely lived to regret wearing a red leotard and asking Rula Lenska: "Do you want me to be the cat?"

Blind Mikey Hughes, who was runner up in 2008, is now building himself a reputation as a dance and radio DJ. Jason Cowan, who came second in 2003, is now a body builder and model. Also modelling is Karly Ashworth, who appeared in Big Brother Nine.

Other contestants have returned to normal life. Federico Martone returned to Glasgow to work in his family restaurant.

And there were those who came to rue the decision to take part. Disco dancer Dennis McHugh was kicked off for spitting in another contestant's face. Personal shopper Sandy Cumming became the first to escape when he climbed over the wall in 2003.

Shabhaz Chaudhry said Big Brother ruined his life, but could not resist the invitation to take part in the final series as he recreated his plate-smashing meltdown for the cameras
