After Shirley Anne Field, 72, complained to Mandrake that Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Eileen Atkins had cornered the market in "grand dame" roles, Felicity Kendal suggests it is unbecoming for older actresses to "gripe about not having enough work".
The star of The Good Life, 63, who is competing in Strictly Come Dancing, says: "Plays and TV represent what life is like. We are getting many more series and many more plays about women running businesses, because that is what our society is like.
