Tragedy for Strictly star Ann Widdecombe as her brother dies

Behind the jaunty flourishes of her stately-as-a-galleon performances on Strictly Come Dancing, Ann Widdecombe has been nursing a secret heartache - her beloved only brother, a retired ­Anglican priest, has been dying of cancer.

Last night, the former Tory ­minister was in mourning after her worst fears materialised.

Ann learned of her brother’s death while training with Anton Du Beke on Tuesday. Canon ­Malcolm Widdecombe passed away at his home in ­Bristol just two days after his sister had visited him.

But any fears from the producers of the show that Ann would pull out have been allayed. She is ­staying on, say friends - not least because Malcolm would have wanted her to.

Tina O'Brien pulls out of this weekend's show after contracting chickenpox

Strictly Come Dancing has been hit by fears of a damaging chickenpox outbreak after a contestant pulled out of this week's show with it.

Former Coronation Street star Tina O'Brien has been hit with the highly contagious illness and will not be dancing on Saturday night.
But her withdrawal has sparked concerns that other stars could have become infected as a result of contact on the show.
The virus has an incubation period of between 14 and 21 days and is thought to be contagious for about five days.

Scott triumphs, Ann flies!

The fourth week of Strictly Come Dancing 2010 has brought with it more memorable moments as the remaining couples performed the Charleston and tango.

And once again it was a great night for Scott Maslen and Matt Baker, both of whom tied at the top of the judges' scoreboard with 35 points out of 40.

The pair have now tied with Pamela Stephenson, who also scored 35 last week, for the highest score of the series so far.

Peter Shilton is sent off!

Peter Shilton has become the latest casualty of Strictly Come Dancing 2010 after finding himself in the bottom two for the second time.

The former footballer narrowly missed out on elimination two weeks ago when Goldie was sent home - but this time around he came a cropper after performing a Charleston with Erin Boag.

After finding himself in the bottom two with Michelle Williams - who was there for the second week running - he was revealed to have received the lowest number of votes from viewers.

However he accepted defeat graciously, saying he had had a "fantastic" time.

"It's such a strong competition this year but it's been a great experience," Peter said.

"I won't miss the judges, obviously," he joked, "but I think the spirit among the competitors has been great.

Ann Widdecombe could be set to make her entrance to 'Strictly Come Dancing' on horseback this weekend.

Bosses of the BBC One show are keen for the former Conservative minister to ride into the show on horseback - mimicking Lady Godiva, an Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who, according to legend, rode naked through the streets of the West Midlands town of Coventry - although Ann will not appear naked.

The plan has been devised as a way for the dance star to top last week's show, where she flew with the aid of high wires.
