The National Television Awards 2011

ITV1 London, Wednesday 26 January

7:30pm - 10:00pm

I'm a firm believer that watching any kind of awards ceremony is best done from the comfort of the living room, where you don't have to wear constricting evening gowns. Best of all, you can shriek loudly with horror if your particular favourite goes away empty-handed. So open an industrial-sized bag of crisps for television's big night, the raucous National TV Awards from the cavernous O2 Arena in London. That nice Dermot O'Leary, a nominee in the entertainment presenter category, is the host - though you, ladies and gentlemen, are the jury, as the NTAs are voted for by members of the public. The shortlists are undeniably populist, with the emphasis on soaps, or rather serial dramas. Elsewhere the votes of RT readers set up some potentially interesting battles - for instance, who's best out of Benedict Cumberbatch, Philip Glenister, David Jason and Matt Smith? Was Doctor Who better than Sherlock? We shall see what the nation decides.

Top Gear poke fun at Sky Sports sexism scandal

BBC show Top Gear picked up the award for Best Factual Show at last night’s National Television Awards – and couldn’t resist poking fun at the Sky Sports sexism scandal.

Picking up the award, James May said: “We’d like to say a special thank you to the girl who put the microphone down our trousers earlier on.”

Jeremy Clarkson, who joked that Top Gear hadn’t been factual for seven years, added: “You’re sacked.”
