Shaun Ryder wanted to appear on Strictly Come Dancing, it has been revealed.

The ‘Step On’ singer – who was famously banned by Channel 4 from appearing on live TV following a foul-mouthed outburst on TFI Friday – accepted an offer to take part in the contest, but his appearance was blocked by worried BBC chiefs.

He said: “I got offered Strictly. The producers wanted me and I was up for I but the head of the BBC said he wouldn’t take a chance on Shaun Ryder doing prime-time TV on a Saturday night.

“Why? I don’t know. Basically, you go and dance and then you keep your mouth shut while those guys on the panel tell you how s**t you are. I guess the BBC top brass thought I’d have a tantrum and be effing and blinding my way through the cha cha cha. I’m fine about it.”

While Ryder recently came second on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, he turned down the chance to appear on Celebrity Big Brother – which was previously won by his Happy Mondays bandmate Bez – because he thinks the show is “obscene”.

He said: “I turned down Big Brother because I don’t think it’s right. It’s obscene.

“To me, it’s a bunch of people with serious mental health problems being locked in a house and someone throwing booze at them. It feels a bit wrong to me. In the jungle, at lest you are bonding and working together.”
